2019 Kia Sportage 2.0 EX Review

Nowadays, the competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market is intense. Consumers value both space practicality and have clear requirements for features and fuel efficiency. The 2019 Kia Sportage 2.0 EX enters this market with a price slightly above RM120,000, focusing on balanced features and fuel economy. In this test drive, we will focus on whether it can meet the daily needs of family users — after all, space, fuel economy, and reliability are the core concerns at this level.
Starting with the exterior, the design of the Sportage 2.0 EX follows a simple yet robust approach. The tiger-nose front grille is moderately sized and complemented with chrome trims, avoiding an overly exaggerated look. The halogen headlights on both sides are sharp in shape and integrated with the grille, visually widening the car. The automatic headlight function is very practical during Malaysia's rainy season. The side profile features straight lines, with slightly protruding front and rear wheel arches paired with 18-inch alloy wheels, maintaining the heavy feel of an SUV. At the rear, the taillights adopt a horizontal layout, and the lower section of the rear bumper in the same color as the body is kept simple, leaning towards a family-oriented style that is noticeable but not too ostentatious.
Entering the cabin, the interior is predominantly black, and the dashboard is covered with soft-touch plastic, which feels fairly refined. The central touchscreen is 8 inches and offers moderate smoothness in operation, supporting Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity, sufficient for daily use. Physical buttons are retained below, making it more convenient to adjust air conditioning or volume compared to a purely touchscreen system. The instrument cluster features an illuminated analog style, providing clear displays of information such as RPM and fuel consumption. In terms of features, it offers dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear vents, manually adjustable front seats with moderate support for long-term comfort. For storage, the central armrest box is deep enough to hold two phones, and the front and rear door panels can accommodate large water bottles, meeting the storage needs of family outings.
The space performance aligns with the positioning of a C-Segment SUV, with body dimensions of 4480/1855/1655mm (L×W×H) and a wheelbase of 2670mm. When the front row is adjusted to a comfortable seating position, a 175cm tall passenger in the front has about a fist of headroom, while the rear row offers two fistfuls of legroom and a fist of headroom. The middle floor has a minor hump, allowing three people to sit comfortably without much crowding. The trunk has a standard capacity of 466L, which can be expanded to 1455L by folding down the rear seats — sufficient for strollers or suitcases.
In terms of power, the 2.0L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power of 155PS and a peak torque of 192N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, acceleration isn’t overly brisk but is smooth and linear. The transmission shifts gears seamlessly with no obvious jerks. When overtaking, pressing harder on the accelerator prompts the transmission to downshift quickly, allowing the engine to reach over 4,000 RPM and unleash sufficient torque. At a cruising speed of 120km/h on highways, the vehicle remains stable. As for fuel consumption, urban stop-and-go traffic yields around 8.5L per 100km, while highway cruising drops it to 6.2L. The combined fuel consumption is close to the official figure of 6.5L, making its fuel economy above average in its class of naturally aspirated vehicles.
Handling and suspension performance are comfort-oriented. The front McPherson independent suspension is proficient at absorbing bumps, so vibrations are not directly transmitted to the seats when crossing speed bumps or rough roads. Although the rear suspension is a torsion beam type, it is tuned to be relatively soft, ensuring comfort for rear passengers. The steering wheel offers moderate resistance with little slack, making lane changes and parking easy. The braking system responds smoothly, with ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear. The braking distance is around 40 meters, meeting the standards of a family car.
The details of ride comfort are well executed. Engine noise is almost inaudible at idle, and while there is some tire and wind noise at high speeds, it is not significant enough to interfere with in-car conversations. The seat padding is moderately soft and firm, with sufficient lumbar support, making long drives less fatiguing. The rain-sensing wipers and power-folding side mirrors greatly enhance convenience in daily use.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2019 Kia Sportage 2.0 EX lies in its balance—adequate space, practical features, economical fuel consumption, and Kia's 5-year unlimited mileage warranty ensure reliability. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda CR-V 2.0L or Toyota RAV4 2.0L, it is more affordably priced, better equipped, and stands out for its value. This car is ideal for practical-minded family users, capable of handling daily commutes and short weekend road trips without requiring complex off-road capabilities, simply providing a worry-free, easy-to-drive family SUV.
In summary, the 2019 Kia Sportage 2.0 EX has no apparent weaknesses and is a "well-rounded" family car. It may not be the sportiest or the most luxurious in terms of features, but within a 120,000 RMB budget, it fulfills all the basic needs of family users in terms of space, fuel efficiency, and reliability, making it a pragmatic choice.
