2019 Kia Sportage Sportage 2.0D GT-LINE Review

Nowadays, the competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market is intense. Most models either focus on cost-performance but compromise on features, or pile on features with inflated prices, making it difficult for consumers to find a "balanced and all-rounded" choice. The 2019 Kia Sportage 2.0D GT-LINE, priced at RM139,888 and offering a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, along with the torque advantage of its diesel engine, precisely meets family users' needs for "durability, power, and adequate configuration." The core of this test drive is to see whether it can truly become a reliable "blind pick" option for daily commuting, weekend family outings, and other scenarios.
The Sportage 2.0D GT-LINE has a highly recognizable exterior, completely free from the "mediocre feel" of some models in the same class. The front features Kia's signature "tiger-nose" grille, connected to halogen headlights on either side with chrome trims. Although not LED, the automatic headlight function is convenient enough for daily use. The side profile displays smooth lines, with the waistline extending from the front fenders to the rear adding a sense of muscularity. Paired with 19-inch large wheels, the visual impression is more imposing than its actual size. The rear design is relatively simple, with smoked taillight clusters echoing the silver skid plate on the rear bumper. It retains the rugged character of an SUV without appearing overly rough. Overall, its design still feels contemporary even three years later, suiting users who prefer something with a bit of character but not too flashy.
Stepping inside, the interior materials feel quite solid, with soft-touch materials on the dashboard and door panels. There’s no evident sense of cheap plastic in areas within arm's reach. The GT-LINE version comes with special seats featuring a mix of leather and fabric, offering decent support and ensuring comfort even over extended periods of sitting. The center console layout is clear, with an 8-inch touchscreen positioned just right and operating smoothly – among the better ones in the same class. Although it lacks modern connected car features, basic functionalities like Bluetooth connectivity and USB ports are included, sufficient for daily use. The instrument cluster features traditional analog-style dials, presenting information intuitively. The tachometer and speedometer readings are clear and easy to read even under strong sunlight. In terms of space, the 2670mm wheelbase is mainstream for C-Segment SUVs, with spacious front-row seating. A passenger standing 180cm tall can adjust the seat with around a fist's worth of headroom remaining, while the rear legroom provides about two fistfuls of space. Even with three adults seated in the back, there’s no sense of crowding, and the nearly flat floor ensures comfortable seating for the middle passenger. The trunk offers 466L of capacity, which easily accommodates two 28-inch suitcases and several backpacks. For weekend family camping trips, fitting tents, foldable chairs, and other gear is a breeze.
In terms of performance, the 2.0L diesel engine is the highlight of this vehicle. Delivering a maximum horsepower of 185PS and peak torque of 400N·m (available from 1700 to 2750rpm), paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the power response during take-off is straightforward. A gentle tap on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back sensation, making it very easy to follow other cars or overtake in the city. Even with five passengers and additional luggage, climbing hills doesn’t feel sluggish. The transmission has clear shifting logic, with smooth upshifts and negligible jolts during downshifts – you can barely notice them in daily driving. The suspension system uses front MacPherson independent suspension, tuned towards comfort. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension filters out most of the bumps so passengers inside don’t feel significant jolts. During high-speed cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the steering has minimal play with precise pointing, giving the driver sufficient confidence. In terms of noise control, while the idling noise of the diesel engine is slightly louder than petrol cars, wind noise and tire noise are well suppressed during driving. At a speed of 100 km/h, normal conversations inside the cabin are no problem at all. The fuel consumption is also satisfactory. This test drive covered congested city roads, highway cruising, and suburban areas. The overall fuel consumption was around 6.8L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 6.5L/100km. However, considering actual driving conditions such as air conditioning usage and road conditions, this is already an excellent result. With a full 62L fuel tank, the range can easily exceed 800km, reducing the hassle of frequent refueling.
In terms of braking performance, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes perform stably, the brake pedal feels linear, with slight but not obvious play in the initial stage, and evenly released braking force in the mid-stage. During emergency braking, the vehicle maintains a stable posture without significant nosedive. As for handling, although it's a front-wheel-drive SUV, the steering wheel offers moderate resistance, feeling light at low speeds and stable at high speeds. Tasks like daily parking and U-turns are quite effortless. The suspension strikes a good balance between comfort and support; it doesn't feel overly soft like some Japanese cars nor overly stiff like some German cars, making it well-suited for Malaysia's bumpy road conditions.
In summary, the Kia Sportage 2.0D GT-LINE has very clear core advantages: low fuel consumption and high torque from its diesel engine, a reliable five-year unlimited mileage warranty, balanced space utilization, and comparatively rich features for its price range of 130,000 MYR. Compared with competitors like the CR-V 1.5T or RAV4 2.0L, its diesel engine offers better torque and is more affordable. Compared with domestic SUVs, it has stronger brand reliability and a more convincing warranty policy.
This car is most suitable for people who value "practicality, durability, and peace of mind"—such as office workers who need to commute over 50 kilometers daily and can benefit greatly from its low fuel consumption; families who enjoy weekend outings, as its large space and strong power can meet their needs; and users who have high requirements for vehicle reliability, with the five-year unlimited mileage warranty providing extra reassurance.
If you’re looking for a C-Segment SUV "without obvious shortcomings," don’t need too many fancy features, and simply want solid performance, sufficient space, and reliable quality, then the Sportage 2.0D GT-LINE is definitely worth considering. It may not be the most stunning option, but it is undoubtedly one of the most reliable choices.
