2019 Mini John Cooper Works Countryman Review

In Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market, vehicles that combine driving pleasure with practicality have always been the focus of young families and performance enthusiasts. The 2019 Mini John Cooper Works Countryman (hereinafter referred to as JCW Countryman) is undoubtedly the "unique contender" in this segment. Equipped with a 310PS high-performance 2.0T engine, all-wheel drive system, and MINI's iconic sporty DNA, it also retains the practicality of a 5-seat SUV. In this test drive, we aim to verify whether it can balance the dual demands of "passionate driving" and "daily utility."
From the exterior, the JCW Countryman continues MINI’s signature rounded contours but incorporates numerous sporty details. The front features a blacked-out honeycomb grille paired with striking LED headlights on each side, while the lower front lip and side skirts are finished in glossy black, enhancing its recognizability. The compact side profile, 19-inch alloy wheels, and 235/45 R19 tires contribute to a powerful visual impact. At the rear, the round dual exhaust outlets and spoiler clearly declare its performance identity. The LED taillights feature a circular design, offering high visibility at night. The overall style maintains MINI’s playful charm while the sporty elements emphasize the uniqueness of the JCW version.
Opening the door reveals an interior design dominated by black with red stitching accents, with the round touchscreen on the center console as the visual centerpiece. The 6.5-inch touchscreen operates smoothly and supports basic multimedia functions, while the 12-speaker sound system delivers commendable audio performance. In terms of materials, the steering wheel and seats are clad in leather, offering a refined tactile experience. Although the seats are manually adjustable, their support and wrapping align with the sporty positioning of the vehicle. In terms of features, a HUD heads-up display, keyless entry, and dual-zone automatic climate control are standard, while the rear row even includes independent air outlets, thoughtful details for passengers’ comfort.
Space performance is one of the JCW Countryman's core advantages as an SUV. The vehicle dimensions are 4299mm×1822mm×1557mm, with a wheelbase of 2670mm, providing generous front-row seating space; a 180cm tall passenger will still have sufficient headroom and legroom. The rear row can accommodate three adult passengers without feeling cramped, with legroom of about two fists and headroom of about one fist. The trunk offers a capacity of 450L, ample for strollers or shopping bags, and the rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-fold configuration. Once folded, it can provide expanded storage space, suitable for long road trips or transporting large items.
The most brilliant aspect of the JCW Countryman is its performance. The 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power of 310PS and peak torque is available from as low as 1,750rpm to 4,500rpm. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system, the car responds sharply to throttle inputs during acceleration, offering a distinct push back sensation with just a light press. When switched to Sport mode, the transmission adopts a more aggressive shifting logic, with faster downshifts, and power is readily available for overtaking with a hard press of the accelerator. For daily driving, the Standard mode provides smooth power delivery, making it well-suited for urban commutes. During highway cruising, the engine runs at around 2,000rpm, and fuel efficiency is moderate. The official combined fuel consumption is 6.9L/100km, while the actual test drive resulted in approximately 8L/100km in urban conditions and 6L/100km on highways.
In terms of handling, the JCW Countryman has a precise steering wheel with minimal slack. The body roll is well-controlled when cornering. The suspension adopts a multi-link independent rear suspension system, which can filter out most small vibrations on bumpy roads while retaining a certain level of road feel, balancing sportiness and comfort. The all-wheel-drive system provides better grip on slippery roads or during light off-road conditions, but its positioning is still that of an urban SUV, so high-intensity off-roading is not recommended. The braking system performs steadily, with front ventilated discs and rear ventilated discs providing linear braking effects. The vehicle maintains a stable body posture during emergency braking.
In terms of ride comfort, the JCW Countryman achieves decent noise control. Wind noise and tire noise are acceptable during high-speed driving. The seats offer excellent support, ensuring comfort during long drives. The energy recovery system engages smoothly without causing any noticeable dragging sensation, making it suitable for daily driving.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2019 JCW Countryman lies in its balance of "performance + practicality"—with 310PS of power placing it in the top tier among SUVs in the same class, while its 5-seat space and flexible trunk can meet family needs. Compared with other C-Segment SUVs in the same category, it offers more comprehensive features (such as standard HUD and keyless entry) and places greater emphasis on sportiness. This car is suitable for two types of people: one group includes young couples who value driving pleasure while needing to accommodate family trips; the other group includes urban professionals who appreciate the MINI brand's vibe and pursue individuality and performance.
In conclusion, the 2019 Mini JCW Countryman is not an "all-rounded" family SUV, but a "maximized sporty fun on a practical foundation" distinctive choice. If you're looking for a car that can be both a weekend joyride and a daily driver for family needs, it's a great option.
