In Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market, the 2020 BMW X3 xDrive30i Luxury has always been a popular choice for family users and young professionals—this class of consumers values brand prestige while also requiring sufficient practicality and driving quality. The core of this test drive is to see whether this vehicle can still meet current driving needs in terms of configuration, space, and dynamics, as well as to determine where its advantages lie compared to competitors in the same segment.

First, let's look at the exterior. The 2020 X3 xDrive30i Luxury retains BMW's classic design language, with overall lines that are robust yet understated. The kidney grille at the front is moderately sized and paired with sharp LED headlights on each side, ensuring a high level of recognizability. Chrome trim on the lower front bumper adds a touch of sophistication, aligning with the “Luxury” trim's positioning. Along the sides, the shoulder line runs from the front to the rear, complemented by 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, which give it a stable yet dynamic feel. At the rear, the LED taillights feature an L-shaped design, echoing the headlights, while the silver skid plate on the rear bumper enhances the SUV's off-road aura. The entire exterior design is not overly extravagant; it has a timeless appeal, suitable for both daily commutes and business occasions.

Stepping inside, the interior texture aligns well with the expectations of a luxury brand. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, paired with wood grain trims and chrome accents, offering a pleasing tactile and visual experience. The 10.25-inch touchscreen is positioned at the top of the center console; its interface is fluid and supports gesture controls and voice recognition. The fully digital instrument panel is clear and offers multiple display modes, making it convenient for drivers to access information. In terms of features, the front seats support electric adjustment and memory functions, and the passenger seat also has electric adjustment, providing excellent support and comfort. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, with a remote-controlled folding function for easier transport of longer items. A three-zone automatic climate control system comes standard, with independent rear air vents so every passenger can set their preferred temperature during family outings. Additionally, practical and comfortable features like keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, and a 12-speaker sound system meet everyday needs with ease.

In terms of space, this car's wheelbase reaches 2864mm. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable driving position, there is about two fist widths of legroom left in the rear, and the headroom is also ample. A 180cm tall passenger won't feel cramped. The trunk's standard volume is 550 liters, and folding down the rear seats expands it to accommodate even more items, making it easy to fit strollers, suitcases, or camping gear. There are also plenty of interior storage compartments, like the center armrest box and door storage slots, for small everyday items, adding to its practicality.

In terms of power, the 2020 X3 xDrive30i Luxury is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 252PS and a peak torque of 350N·m. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. During daily driving, the car accelerates smoothly, the throttle response is sensitive, and the low-end torque output is sufficient, making it easy to follow or overtake in city traffic. Switching to Sport mode delivers more direct power output, with quicker gear shifts and a noticeable sense of acceleration, satisfying occasional desires for driving excitement. Fuel consumption is relatively standard; the official combined fuel consumption is 7.6L/100km, with actual figures around 9-10L/100km in city driving, and dropping to roughly 7L on the highway. For an SUV in this class, these figures are within an acceptable range.

Handling and chassis performance are BMW's strengths, and this X3 is no exception. The steering is precise with minimal slack, light at low speeds, and stable at high speeds, giving the driver great confidence. The suspension system is tuned for comfort while maintaining a certain level of support. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, it filters out most of the vibrations, ensuring no significant jolts; when cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, providing good stability. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system delivers better traction on slippery roads or during light off-roading, and it also enhances stability during everyday driving.

In terms of ride comfort, the noise control inside the car is commendable; wind noise and tire noise are unobtrusive at high speeds, ensuring they won't affect conversations inside the cabin. The seats are very comfortable and do not cause fatigue even during long trips. Additionally, features like automatic parking, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera are very practical for beginners or those who find parking difficult.

In summary, the key strengths of the 2020 BMW X3 xDrive30i Luxury lie in its balanced performance: strong brand value, practical space, rich features, and excellent driving quality. Compared to its segment peer, the Mercedes-Benz GLC, it offers superior handling; against the Audi Q5L, it stands out for its interior quality and features. This car is suitable for consumers who value brand reputation, pursue driving quality, and need to balance family use—such as 30-40-year-old family users or young professionals who need frequent commuting and occasional business use.

In conclusion, although the 2020 BMW X3 xDrive30i Luxury has been on the market for a few years, its overall performance remains strong, making it a worthy choice in the luxury mid-size SUV segment.

Last Saturday, I drove the whole family to Genting Highlands. It was heavy rain plus winding mountain roads, but the X3's xDrive was incredibly stable. The active braking even helped me avoid a motorcycle that suddenly changed lanes—deducting 1 point for safety because the kids in the back kept complaining that the seatbelt buckle was uncomfortable. The genuine leather interior feels great to the touch, but the 10.25-inch screen reflects sunlight, so I had to tilt my head to see the navigation. However, when driving to the mall, those LED headlights and sharp lines really boosted the head-turn rate from pedestrians. Full marks for appearance, absolutely well-deserved.

Last Saturday, I drove my parents to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after leaving the city, we encountered a heavy rain, but the automatic rain-sensing wipers worked steadily. When entering the mountain with many curves, the xDrive all-wheel drive provided good traction, but the body roll was more noticeable than expected when cornering through continuous sharp turns, so 1 point deducted for performance. Parking at the orchard entrance, the LED headlights were still very bright in the rainy weather, attracting a few glances from passersby. The exterior design is indeed appealing. The interior wood trim and leather seats have great texture. My parents said the rear air conditioning was very adequate and they felt comfortable sitting there.

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to a mango orchard at the foot of Genting Hill. As soon as we got on the winding mountain road, we encountered a heavy downpour, and the road surface was as slippery as if it were greased. The xDrive all-wheel drive of the X3 is really not just for show; the car remained super stable while cornering, the steering feedback was precise, and there was no sense of drifting at all. On the muddy road near the orchard, the 245/50 R19 tires provided strong enough grip, so the car didn't get stuck. In terms of safety, the automatic braking system saved me once in a traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur, but the lane-keeping feature on highways occasionally acts up, so I'd rate it 4 stars. As for the appearance, the chrome trims of the Luxury version are low-key and understated. Driving it brings both prestige and modesty, earning it a well-deserved 4 stars.

Last week, I took my family to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just past the Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road, we encountered a heavy downpour. The tire noise from the 20-inch wheels mixed with the sound of the wipers was a bit loud, but the active braking system suddenly warned me—the pickup truck in front braked suddenly, and before I could react, it helped me slow down, giving me a cold sweat. The interior stitching is exquisite, and the rear air conditioning is cool enough, but the central control screen reflects light terribly, making the navigation hard to see. The exterior indeed looks imposing, but the paint is thin—scraping against roadside branches left marks. Fuel consumption is 11L/100km in the city and 7.6L/100km on the highway, which is acceptable.
