In recent years, the market for mid-size coupe SUVs has been heating up in Malaysia. Consumers desire the practicality of an SUV without sacrificing sportiness and a luxurious experience — the 2020 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport is specifically targeted at this market segment. As a coupe branch of the BMW X series, it not only continues the sporty genetics of the M Sport package but is also equipped with a high-power 2.0T engine and xDrive all-wheel-drive system, while standard features include a HUD heads-up display, Harman Kardon sound system, and other advanced configurations. In this test drive, we will focus on verifying whether it can balance daily practicality within the constraints of a coupe design, and whether its performance and handling live up to the prestigious "BMW" emblem.

From a distance, looking at the 2020 X4 xDrive30i M Sport, the most striking feature is its coupe-style sloping roofline that transitions smoothly from the B-pillar to the rear, creating a sharp contrast with the boxy shape of traditional SUVs. The front adopts BMW's signature kidney grille, paired with high-gloss black trim and large air intakes on both sides of the M Sport-specific front bumper, maximizing its identity. The side profile features smooth lines, with 20-inch alloy wheels (245/45 R20 tires for both front and rear) further enhancing its sporty stance; the black cladding on the side skirts and wheel arches retains a hint of SUV ruggedness. The rear features L-shaped smoked LED taillights, complementing the dual round exhaust pipes on each side, while the spoiler adds a finishing touch. The lighting system comes standard with LED sources, including automatic headlights, daytime running lights, and front fog lights, offering sufficient brightness when illuminated at night and combining utility with aesthetic appeal.

Sitting inside the car, the first impression is the signature BMW sporty cockpit layout. The center console tilts slightly toward the driver, ensuring ease of operation; the interior features a predominantly black theme, complemented by silver accents and Alcantara materials, providing a luxurious tactile and visual experience. The front seats are electrically adjustable (with memory function for the driver’s seat) and offer excellent support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The central control screen measures 10.25 inches and supports touchscreen operations. The system is highly responsive, and common features like navigation and multimedia are easy to access. Notably, the standard HUD head-up display can clearly project information such as speed and navigation, significantly improving driving convenience. The fully digital instrument cluster supports multiple display modes and changes its theme color when switching driving modes. The rear seats are split-foldable in a 40:20:40 arrangement; although the sloping roofline slightly impacts headroom, a passenger with a height of 175 cm still has about a fist-worth of headroom, with ample legroom. In terms of storage, the front door pockets can accommodate two bottles of water, the center armrest box has a moderate capacity, and the trunk offers a standard volume of 525L, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats, meeting the needs of daily family use or short trips.

In terms of power, this vehicle is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 252 PS and a peak torque of 350 N·m. It is paired with an 8AT gearbox and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 6.3 seconds. In real driving conditions, the power response is brisk during start-up, and the throttle pedal is tuned linearly, providing a noticeable push when pressed lightly. Switching to Sport mode delays gear shifts, maintains the revs at higher levels, and delivers more rapid acceleration, enabling quick overtaking with just firm pressure on the throttle. For daily driving, Comfort mode is the primary choice, where the gearbox shifts smoothly with almost no perceptible jolts, making it ideal for urban commuting. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal free play and clear directional control. The chassis employs front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for a sportier feel. However, it effectively absorbs vibrations when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads without feeling overly stiff. The vehicle remains stable during high-speed rides, and the body roll is well-controlled during cornering, giving the driver ample confidence.

In the special test, we measured a fuel consumption of about 8.2L per 100 kilometers under mixed road conditions (urban congestion + highway cruising), slightly higher than the official figure of 7.8L. Considering the four-wheel drive system and the 2.0T engine, this result is reasonable for its class. The braking performance is excellent, with a stable vehicle posture and short braking distance during emergency stops, providing ample safety. In terms of noise control, the cabin remains quiet during low-speed driving, while at high speeds, there is slight tire noise and wind noise intrusion, but it does not affect normal conversation. The Harman Kardon 16-speaker audio system delivers outstanding sound quality and effectively masks some of the noise.

In summary, the 2020 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport’s core strength lies in its "balance" – it boasts the sporty appearance and handling experience of a coupe SUV without sacrificing too much practicality. Compared with competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe or the Audi Q5 Sportback, it stands out with more comprehensive standard equipment (such as HUD and Harman Kardon audio) and a more competitive price (RM 364,062), making its value for money remarkable. This car is suitable for two groups of people: young consumers who pursue a sporty feel and a sense of luxury, and middle-aged users who need to balance family practicality with personal driving enjoyment.

Overall, the 2020 BMW X4 xDrive30i M Sport is an "all-rounder" coupe SUV that strikes a good balance between design, performance, features, and practicality. If you're looking for the off-road capability and space of an SUV while indulging in the styling and driving pleasure of a coupe, this car is worth adding to your consideration list.

During the morning rush hour, give it some gas and it takes off—6.3 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h is no exaggeration! The hatchback trunk can fit weekend camping gear, though the central control screen occasionally lags. However, once the Harman Kardon sound system is on, even being stuck in traffic becomes enjoyable. xDrive handles rainy uphill climbs like a pro, totally worth the price!

Every morning during rush hour, I feel very confident weaving between cars to overtake. The 2.0T turbo engages quickly, and the 6.3-second 0-100km/h acceleration is no exaggeration! The Harman Kardon audio system is super soothing during traffic jams. However, you need to be cautious over speed bumps with the 20-inch tires. That said, the xDrive system is incredibly stable on rainy mountain roads, providing a full sense of safety.

Previously, I drove a Japanese SUV, and switched to the X4 mainly for its coupe-style design—among the endless "boxy cars" in Kuala Lumpur, it definitely stands out. With the M Sport package and 20-inch wheels, every time I park at Jalan Bukit Bintang, people tend to glance at it. Unfortunately, the paint is thin and easily stained by tree sap, so minus one point for that. During the morning rush on the LDP highway, the 2.0T turbocharger delivers torque at just 1450 rpm, making it effortless to overtake slow cars, and the xDrive system is very stable on rainy highway ramps. However, the rear headroom is a bit lower compared to my old car—someone at 175cm sitting up straight might brush their hair against the ceiling. Nevertheless, it's mostly just me and my wife using it, so it's not a big issue. The Harman Kardon system plays Malaysian songs with excellent audio quality during traffic jams in Johor Bahru, which is a significant upgrade from my previous car. Overall, I'm still very satisfied.

Previously driving a Japanese SUV, I switched to the X4 solely for its coupé-like design and M Sport package – there are way too many "ordinary cars" on the roads in Malaysia, and this car truly turns heads when parked at KLCC. During the morning rush hour on Federal Highway, the 2.0T turbo kicks in at 1450 rpm with great torque, making overtaking much smoother compared to before, and the xDrive system feels very stable on wet highways. The interior is truly delightful; the Harman Kardon audio system is perfect for listening to Malaysian songs during traffic jams, and the HUD navigation means no looking down. However, the rear headroom is indeed a bit cramped (as expected with the coupe design), and anyone above 175cm might find their hair brushing the top after extended periods. The safety features are comprehensive, and the active braking saved me once from a suddenly appearing motorbike in Subang Jaya. Overall, aside from the limited rear space, everything about it perfectly suits someone like me – a Malaysian who values both aesthetics and practicality.

Last week, I took my family to the foot of Mount Genting. It rained heavily, and we were stuck in traffic for half an hour. The Harman Kardon subwoofer was so loud that the kids in the back seat kept covering their ears—but the M Sport seats are absolutely top-notch. When my legs got numb from the traffic, adjusting the memory seating position gave me some relief. Just past the toll booth, the car in front suddenly braked, and the active braking system quickly stopped me with a "thud," instantly filling me with a sense of security from the six airbags. However, the 20-inch tires hit the potholes hard on the mountain road, and the suspension was much stiffer than my old Toyota, making my wife complain about her sore back. Fuel consumption? 11 liters per 100 km in the city and 7.8 on the highway, which is accurate, but with a 65-liter fuel tank, I had to refill twice for the round trip to Genting. It’s really expensive.
