In Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market, consumers' demands for "family practicality" and "driving fun" are gradually overlapping—they want sufficient space for family outings while also hoping to occasionally experience the thrill of flooring the accelerator. The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4MATIC precisely targets this niche market segment, featuring AMG’s performance genes combined with the practical space of the GLB as its core selling points. Our goal for this test drive is to verify whether it can strike a balance between "performance" and "family utility."

As you approach the GLB 35, you can clearly sense its differences from the standard GLB. The overall design retains the iconic boxy silhouette of the GLB, but the front end has been upgraded with AMG’s signature single-slat vertical-bar grille, paired with larger air intakes on both sides, delivering a sporty vibe to the max; the side profile has clean and sharp lines, with 19-inch AMG alloy wheels and red brake calipers standing out prominently, while the chrome trim along the window sill retains a touch of Mercedes' sophistication. At the rear, the dual round exhaust outlets and a small spoiler further reinforce its performance identity. As for the lighting system, all models come standard with LED headlights and taillights that provide sufficient brightness and high nighttime recognition; the addition of front fog lights improves practicality in rainy or foggy weather.

Opening the door, the interior layout is largely consistent with the standard GLB, but the adjustments in details are spot on. The dashboard adopts Mercedes' classic dual-screen design, featuring a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen with clear displays and smooth operations. The AMG-exclusive flat-bottom steering wheel feels sturdy in hand, and the AMG drive mode selector button on the left allows you to switch to performance mode at any time. The seats are wrapped in sporty leather material with good lateral support, and the front seats come with electric adjustment and heating functions. In terms of features, it is equipped with keyless entry, push-button start, automatic air conditioning, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, as well as safety configurations like ABS, ISO FIX child seat anchors, ensuring both convenience and safety for daily use.

Space performance is a major advantage of the GLB 35. Its body dimensions are 4638mm×1834mm×1696mm, with a wheelbase of 2829mm, offering ample legroom in the rear. A passenger 175cm tall sitting in the back has about two fists' distance between their knees and the front seats. The trunk capacity is 570L, which can easily fit two 28-inch suitcases along with several backpacks; when the rear seatbacks are folded down, the space expands to 1755L, making it highly practical. The rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB power outlets, thoughtfully catering to the needs of family users.

Start the engine, and the roar of the 2.0T turbocharged engine is not overly aggressive, but clearly conveys the signal of a performance vehicle. This engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 310PS and peak torque of 400N·m, paired with an 8-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission. Official data indicates a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.2 seconds. During actual driving, when switched to "Comfort" mode, the power output is smooth and linear, suitable for daily commutes. Switching to "Sport+" mode, however, the throttle response becomes extremely sharp; pressing the accelerator hard delivers an instant feeling of thrust, and the transmission shifts noticeably faster, providing great confidence during overtakes. The top speed can reach 250km/h, satisfying your occasional performance cravings.

In terms of handling, the GLB 35's steering is precise with minimal play, providing clear feedback of road conditions when cornering; the suspension system, tuned by AMG, is stiffer compared to the regular GLB, but it doesn't feel overly harsh on bumpy roads, filtering out most of the minor vibrations. At the same time, it provides enough support in corners, and the body roll is well-controlled. The addition of the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system greatly enhances its stability on wet roads, and even during rapid acceleration, there is no tire slippage.

In terms of fuel consumption, our test drive mainly focused on urban roads with a small portion of highway driving. The combined fuel consumption was around 8.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official rating of 7.6L/100km. However, considering its performance-oriented nature, this result is quite respectable. The braking performance is stable, with a steady body posture during emergency braking, and the braking distance ranks among the upper-middle level compared to similar performance SUVs.

In terms of driving comfort, the GLB 35 exceeded expectations. Despite being a performance car, its noise control is excellent; wind and tire noise are barely noticeable during high-speed driving. The seats provide both good support and cushioning, ensuring comfort even on long drives. The energy recovery system only becomes noticeably active in "Eco" mode and does not affect the smoothness of daily driving.

Overall, the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLB 35 4MATIC's core strength lies in its ability to "have the best of both worlds"—it combines AMG's performance DNA to satisfy your desire for speed with the practicality of the GLB and the luxurious feel of a Mercedes-Benz, making it suitable for family use. Compared with its counterparts like the BMW X3 M40i or Audi SQ5, the GLB 35 offers a more competitive price (RM 363,136) and superior space performance.

If you are a consumer who enjoys driving pleasure but also needs to accommodate family travel, the GLB 35 is a great option. It can provide comfortable commuting during weekdays, let you enjoy mountain roads during the weekend, and occasionally handle family outings. All in all, the GLB 35 is a "versatile" performance SUV that proves performance and practicality can go hand in hand.

Pros
Powerful performance, 2.0T engine offers fast acceleration, excellent for highway overtaking and climbing, reaches 0-100 km/h in 5.2 seconds
Smooth and responsive transmission, DCT is seamless in traffic jams, quick and crisp downshifts
Ample space, the rear row can accommodate three adults, and the trunk can hold strollers and other items
Cons
Fuel consumption is relatively high, actual fuel consumption is 1-2L higher than the official 7.6L; more noticeable when driving in the city with air conditioning on
Body flexibility is insufficient, the boxy body wobbles a bit on slippery curves, less agile than a sports coupe
Exterior design has shortcomings, the box-shaped design lacks streamlining and misses the aggressiveness of AMG

This GLB35 has been running for a while, truly satisfying! The DCT is smooth during traffic jams, and it accelerates instantly with a press of the pedal on the highway. The rear row comfortably fits three big guys without feeling cramped, and there's still space left in the trunk after placing a stroller and a backpack. However, the start-stop feature can get a bit annoying in traffic jams, but the LED lights are bright enough on rainy days, and the rain-sensing wipers save effort as well.

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kid to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as I got onto the mountain road, it started pouring rain. The LED headlights of the GLB 35 had strong penetrating power, and the rain-sensing wipers were prompt, but the boxy body felt a bit wobbly on the slippery curves, not as agile as a coupe. However, the 2.0T with 310 horsepower performed well during uphill climbs, the DCT downshifted smoothly, and overtaking was effortless. The trunk had space left after packing a stroller and a picnic basket, but the fuel consumption was more than 1 liter higher than the official 7.6, probably due to the mountain roads and air conditioning. As for the exterior, the AMG package looks imposing, but the boxy design lacks a bit of aerodynamic elegance. Still, giving it a 4 out of 5 isn't unfair.

Stuck in a traffic jam during rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the car in front suddenly braked sharply, and the GLB 35's active braking system kicked in with a "thud." When the ABS system pulsed through the pedal, I only then realized—this safety feature truly deserves a rating of 5. The rain sensor detected sudden rain and automatically accelerated the wipers, while the LED headlights cut through the rain curtain. However, the car's side profile is too boxy, looking like an oversized A-Class from afar, lacking the aggressive flair of an AMG. Deducting 1 point for the exterior design.

Every time there's a traffic jam, just one tap on the gas pedal easily overtakes the car in front, accelerating to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds is no joke! It's not cramped even with three friends sitting in the back, and the trunk can easily accommodate a stroller + a backpack without any issues. However, the interior feels a bit plasticky, and fuel consumption of 7.6L in urban areas is still acceptable.

Last Wednesday after work, I encountered a heavy downpour, and the Beigannan Expressway was jammed like a parking lot. The 2.0T turbo engine of the GLB 35 felt like a trapped beast amidst the traffic; a slight press on the accelerator made it leap forward, and the DCT transmission responded so quickly it felt like it was wired directly to nerves. Lane-cutting and changing lanes were executed without delay. In the heavy rain, the LED headlights had strong penetrative power, and the sharp body lines remained striking through the rain, even catching the attention of a nearby Civic driver, who rolled down their window for another glance. The only downside is that the fuel consumption is quite a bit higher than the official figures—7.6L? With air conditioning in the city, it's at least 9L. But with this performance, it’s worth it.
