Specs

With the increasingly fierce competition in the compact SUV market, models that balance daily practicality and brand reliability have gradually become the first choice for family users. The 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 V, as a mid-cycle refreshed model, maintains the consistent durability of the Corolla series while optimizing configurations and details. Its official price is RM 133,800, slightly lower than the same configuration model for 2023, further enhancing its cost-effectiveness. This test drive will focus on its static experience, dynamic performance, and daily practicality to see if this classic model can meet the core needs of today's consumers.

In terms of appearance, the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 V continues the family-style design language, with an overall style that leans towards stability. The front adopts a large trapezoidal grille, accented with horizontal black trim strips inside. The sharp design of the LED headlight assemblies on both sides is connected to the chrome trim along the upper edge of the grille, enhancing the visual width. The side profile of the vehicle features smooth lines, with a waistline running from the front fender to the rear, adding a muscular feel. The 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 225/50 R18 tires ensure both drivability and aesthetics. At the rear, the LED taillight assemblies feature a smoked design with C-shaped light strips inside, offering high recognition when lit up. The silver skid plate on the lower part of the rear bumper, combined with the dual exhaust trims (actual exhaust pipes are hidden), adds a touch of sportiness to the rear.

Stepping inside, the interior adopts black as the main color tone, with the dashboard wrapped in soft materials and adorned with silver trim, meeting the quality expectations for this price range. The center console area has a simple layout and is equipped with a 4.2-inch multifunction display screen. Although small, it clearly shows driving information, navigation, and multimedia functions. The steering wheel features a three-spoke multifunction design with electric adjustment. The left buttons control cruise control and safety assistance systems, while the right buttons handle multimedia and phone functions, offering convenient operation. For the seats, the driver’s seat supports 8-way electric adjustment, with a soft cushion and adequate lumbar support. The passenger seat is manually adjustable, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding mechanism. When folded, the trunk space can expand to accommodate larger items, meeting the needs of family cargo. Moreover, features such as front automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, and keyless entry/start are standard, providing high convenience for daily use.

In terms of space, the vehicle’s dimensions are 4460mm in length, 1825mm in width, and 1620mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2640mm, placing it at a medium level among compact SUVs. The front seating area is spacious, providing a fist width of headroom for passengers with a height of 175cm after adjusting the seating position. The legroom in the rear seats is excellent, with the same-height passenger having about two fists of space between their knees and the front seat, and one fist of headroom. Even with three passengers in the back, it does not feel cramped. As for storage, the front center armrest box has a moderate capacity, and the door storage slots can hold two bottles of water. The rear center armrest features cup holders, while there are small storage compartments under the seats and on both sides of the trunk. The regular trunk capacity meets daily shopping needs, and folding the rear seats allows for the placement of large items such as strollers or suitcases.

In terms of power, it is equipped with a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 139PS/6400rpm and a maximum torque of 172N·m/4000rpm, paired with a 7-speed CVT transmission. During daily driving, the power output is smooth, and the initial response is quick, making it suitable for urban commuting; the mid-to-high range acceleration performance is decent. When the accelerator is pressed deeply and the engine speed rises above 4000rpm, the power improves, but advanced planning is needed for high-speed overtaking. The transmission has a clear shift logic, adjusting the gear ratio promptly based on throttle depth with almost no perceptible jolts.

The handling and chassis performance are suitable for its family-oriented positioning. The combination of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension is tuned towards comfort. During urban driving, the suspension effectively absorbs minor road bumps, and the vehicle handles speed bumps well with controlled vibrations. At high speeds, the chassis remains stable, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and body roll during lane changes is kept within reasonable limits. The braking system performs linearly, with moderate initial braking force and sufficient stopping power in the later stages. During emergency braking, the vehicle's stance remains stable.

In the fuel consumption test, we drove approximately 50 km in urban traffic and high-speed road conditions with the air conditioning on throughout the journey. The displayed fuel consumption was 7.2L/100km, which is close to the official combined fuel consumption figure. Fuel economy performance meets expectations. Regarding noise control, the engine noise at idle is minimal, while wind noise and tire noise become slightly noticeable during high-speed driving, though they do not hinder conversation inside the car. Overall, noise levels are on par with other vehicles in its class.

In terms of safety configurations, the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 V comes standard with 7 airbags, ABS anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and ACC adaptive cruise control system. Comprehensive safety features provide sufficient protection for family users.

In summary, the 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 V demonstrates balanced performance in terms of space, configuration, and reliability. Compared to competitors like the Honda HR-V, while it does not excel in power or tech features, it is more affordable and offers higher resale value from the Toyota brand. Compared to the Nissan X-Trail, it has slightly less space but better fuel efficiency and lower maintenance costs. It is suitable for families prioritizing practicality, fuel economy, and brand reliability, especially for daily urban commuting and weekend outings.

As a family-oriented compact SUV, the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 V has no significant shortcomings but lacks standout features in terms of power and tech configurations. If you're looking for a well-rounded vehicle with low operating costs, this model is worth considering. However, if you have high demands for power or a large central control screen, it is recommended to compare other competing models. Overall, it is a practical choice for family use.

Pros
The active safety configuration is practical, with timely responses from active braking and lane departure warning, which have prevented accidents multiple times.
The power is smooth and linear, and the 1.8L naturally aspirated or hybrid system is suitable for Malaysian road conditions, making urban following and highway cruising seamless.
Fuel consumption performance is excellent, with the gasoline version achieving 7-8L in the city and 5-6L on the highway, while the hybrid version goes as low as 4.2L, offering strong range capabilities.
Cons
Some models lack a 360-degree panoramic camera, only equipped with a rearview camera, making parking in narrow spaces inconvenient
Vehicle stability system reacts slightly slower on slippery roads, affecting safety in extreme conditions
Engine noise is noticeable when climbing hills in hybrid versions, and power output seems slightly strained

Owner of 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT
As the owner of a 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8V AT, after driving in Malaysia for almost half a year, let's talk about safety first - I give it a 4-star rating mainly because it's overall stable, but not to the point of being "amazing." For instance, during the rush hour commutes in Kuala Lumpur, when cars often suddenly cut in, its active braking and lane departure warning respond quite timely. Once on the LDP highway, I was almost sideswiped by a truck that abruptly changed lanes; the system directly issued a warning and applied slight braking, which indeed helped. However, there was a time when I was driving on a rural road in heavy rain, and the surface was a bit slippery. The vehicle stability control did kick in, but I felt it reacted half a second slower than I expected, so I deducted some points. Overall, it still inspires confidence. Speaking of performance, I must give it 5 stars! The road conditions in Malaysia are complex, with frequent city traffic jams, highway cruising, and suburban mountain roads. The 1.8L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT gearbox is especially smooth in KL's stop-and-go city traffic. The throttle response is very linear and doesn't jerk. On the North-South Expressway at 120 km/h, the car feels stable, and during overtaking, pressing the throttle more deeply delivers adequate power without feeling sluggish. The most surprising experience was driving down the winding road of Genting Highlands. Although it's a front-wheel-drive vehicle, the suspension provides solid support. There's much less body roll in corners compared to my old car, and with the precise steering, it inspires a lot of confidence. Fuel efficiency is impressive too, achieving about 7.5L/100km in city traffic and 5.8L on highways, which is really satisfying for an SUV in this category!

Owner of 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV GR Sport
As the owner of the 2025 Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport, after driving it in Malaysia for nearly three months, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! **Performance gets a perfect 5 stars** — The morning traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur can make you question life, but the hybrid system is incredibly impressive! When driving at low speed in electric mode, it's completely silent, and the car moves smoothly with just a light press on the accelerator; when on the North-South Highway for overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply engages both the engine and the electric motor, delivering power very smoothly. Even cruising at 120 km/h on the highway feels stable. The most surprising part is the fuel consumption; even in the heavily congested city, it's just 4.2L/100km, which is half of what my previous fuel-powered car consumed. One full tank can last for 800 kilometers, which is perfect for Malaysia's road conditions. **Safety scores 4 stars** — Toyota's TSS advanced safety system is truly useful! I drive on the LDP highway daily, and the lane-keeping assist keeps me centered. The forward collision warning once alerted me when the car in front of me braked sharply at the SS2 intersection, and the system immediately alerted me and even applied some braking. It gave me a scare but saved my bumper. However, the reverse camera only has a rear view without a 360-degree view, so parking in narrow spots like in Pavilion requires more caution. If this feature could be upgraded, it would be perfect. **Exterior gets 4 stars** — The GR Sport's sporty kit definitely looks better than the standard version! The black honeycomb grille, 18-inch black rims, combined with the red accents on the body, make it really stand out in the neighborhood. However, the paint seems a bit thin; the other day in Ipoh, a street-side branch scratched the car and exposed the base paint, which is something I have to complain about. Overall, this car is incredibly practical for use in Malaysia, and it's really suitable for daily family use!

Owner of 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 V
As the owner of the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 V for nearly three months, the most satisfying thing is its performance! Everyone understands the road conditions in Malaysia, whether it's the daily congestion on Jalan Ampang during the commute or the winding roads to Genting Highlands on weekends, this car easily handles them all. The 1.8L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT transmission ensures smooth and jerk-free starts, making it especially comfortable to follow traffic in the city. On the LDP highway, overtaking is also impressive; when you press the accelerator hard and the RPM rises, the power delivery is very linear, unlike some small-engine cars that feel "weak." The chassis tuning is also very suitable for local road conditions, filtering speed bumps or potholes smoothly, and even after sitting in the back for a long time, family members don’t feel bumpy. I also feel quite reassured about safety; features like 7 airbags, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking are very practical. There was a time near Pavilion when I got stuck in traffic, and the car in front suddenly braked hard. My car immediately alerted me and decelerated automatically, helping me avoid a rear-end collision. When driving long distances, using ACC cruise control not only frees up my right foot but also consistently maintains a safe distance, ensuring a great sense of security. However, the only minor regret is the lack of a 360-degree panoramic camera; beginners might need some time to adapt when parking, but for an experienced driver like me, it’s not a big issue. Overall, the performance and safety features of this car are very competitive within this price range!

Owner of 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV GR Sport
As the owner of the 2025 Corolla Cross HEV GR Sport, having driven it for almost three months, I must say I like it more and more as I drive! Let's talk about performance first. You all know the road conditions in Malaysia, right? Traffic jams in KL city are a daily occurrence, and on the highways, you often need to overtake. The power response of this hybrid is particularly smooth. When driving at low speeds on electric power, it's quiet and light, making it effortless in stop-and-go traffic jams. On the North-South Expressway, when you need to overtake a truck, pressing the accelerator hard engages both the motor and the engine, giving steady acceleration without feeling sluggish. The most surprising thing is the fuel consumption. I commute daily on the LDP highway and small urban roads, and it averages just 4.2L/100km. It's much more fuel-efficient compared to my previous petrol car. The 36L fuel tank, when full, can last over 800 kilometers, making it perfect for someone like me who often goes on long trips! Speaking of the exterior, the sporty kit on the GR Sport version is absolutely my style! The black front grille, smoked 18-inch wheels, and the small rear spoiler make it look much sharper than the standard version. The LED headlights are super bright when driving on the road at night, with great visibility. The body lines are very bold, and with this gray paint, it looks exceptionally premium in the sunlight. Every time I park it, I can’t help but take another look. My friends who sit in my car always say that the exterior doesn’t look like a car priced in the tens of thousands of ringgit – it’s absolutely premium! All in all, whether for daily commutes or weekend family trips to Genting, this car’s performance has left me very satisfied. It scores full marks both in performance and appearance!

Owner of 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV
As the owner of the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 HEV, having driven it for almost a month, I truly feel this car is very suitable for Malaysian road conditions! The exterior deserves a perfect score; the large front grille paired with LED headlights makes it particularly eye-catching in KL traffic. The side profile is also very sleek, and every time I park at the Pavilion entrance, it always turns heads. The interior gets a 4 out of 5. The overall build quality is very solid, the soft-touch materials on the dashboard feel great, and the 12.3-inch center control screen is responsive. CarPlay connects very smoothly. However, the position of the rear air conditioning vents is a bit low, making it easy to get bumped by feet during long trips. If they could be positioned higher, it would be perfect. In terms of performance, the 1.8 hybrid is fantastic for the congested streets of Kuala Lumpur! The electric mode is especially quiet when starting up, and acceleration is very smooth. On the LDP highway, driving at 110km/h feels stable. However, last week when driving up to Genting Highlands, the engine noise was slightly audible, and the power output felt a bit strained. After all, it's a 1.8-liter engine, which is understandable. All in all, being able to purchase a hybrid SUV at this price point offers amazing value!
