Toyota Corolla Cross Review

With the increasingly fierce competition in the compact SUV market, models that balance daily practicality and brand reliability have gradually become the first choice for family users. The 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 V, as a mid-cycle refreshed model, maintains the consistent durability of the Corolla series while optimizing configurations and details. Its official price is RM 133,800, slightly lower than the same configuration model for 2023, further enhancing its cost-effectiveness. This test drive will focus on its static experience, dynamic performance, and daily practicality to see if this classic model can meet the core needs of today's consumers.
In terms of appearance, the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 V continues the family-style design language, with an overall style that leans towards stability. The front adopts a large trapezoidal grille, accented with horizontal black trim strips inside. The sharp design of the LED headlight assemblies on both sides is connected to the chrome trim along the upper edge of the grille, enhancing the visual width. The side profile of the vehicle features smooth lines, with a waistline running from the front fender to the rear, adding a muscular feel. The 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 225/50 R18 tires ensure both drivability and aesthetics. At the rear, the LED taillight assemblies feature a smoked design with C-shaped light strips inside, offering high recognition when lit up. The silver skid plate on the lower part of the rear bumper, combined with the dual exhaust trims (actual exhaust pipes are hidden), adds a touch of sportiness to the rear.
Stepping inside, the interior adopts black as the main color tone, with the dashboard wrapped in soft materials and adorned with silver trim, meeting the quality expectations for this price range. The center console area has a simple layout and is equipped with a 4.2-inch multifunction display screen. Although small, it clearly shows driving information, navigation, and multimedia functions. The steering wheel features a three-spoke multifunction design with electric adjustment. The left buttons control cruise control and safety assistance systems, while the right buttons handle multimedia and phone functions, offering convenient operation. For the seats, the driver’s seat supports 8-way electric adjustment, with a soft cushion and adequate lumbar support. The passenger seat is manually adjustable, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding mechanism. When folded, the trunk space can expand to accommodate larger items, meeting the needs of family cargo. Moreover, features such as front automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, and keyless entry/start are standard, providing high convenience for daily use.
In terms of space, the vehicle’s dimensions are 4460mm in length, 1825mm in width, and 1620mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2640mm, placing it at a medium level among compact SUVs. The front seating area is spacious, providing a fist width of headroom for passengers with a height of 175cm after adjusting the seating position. The legroom in the rear seats is excellent, with the same-height passenger having about two fists of space between their knees and the front seat, and one fist of headroom. Even with three passengers in the back, it does not feel cramped. As for storage, the front center armrest box has a moderate capacity, and the door storage slots can hold two bottles of water. The rear center armrest features cup holders, while there are small storage compartments under the seats and on both sides of the trunk. The regular trunk capacity meets daily shopping needs, and folding the rear seats allows for the placement of large items such as strollers or suitcases.
In terms of power, it is equipped with a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 139PS/6400rpm and a maximum torque of 172N·m/4000rpm, paired with a 7-speed CVT transmission. During daily driving, the power output is smooth, and the initial response is quick, making it suitable for urban commuting; the mid-to-high range acceleration performance is decent. When the accelerator is pressed deeply and the engine speed rises above 4000rpm, the power improves, but advanced planning is needed for high-speed overtaking. The transmission has a clear shift logic, adjusting the gear ratio promptly based on throttle depth with almost no perceptible jolts.
The handling and chassis performance are suitable for its family-oriented positioning. The combination of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension is tuned towards comfort. During urban driving, the suspension effectively absorbs minor road bumps, and the vehicle handles speed bumps well with controlled vibrations. At high speeds, the chassis remains stable, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and body roll during lane changes is kept within reasonable limits. The braking system performs linearly, with moderate initial braking force and sufficient stopping power in the later stages. During emergency braking, the vehicle's stance remains stable.
In the fuel consumption test, we drove approximately 50 km in urban traffic and high-speed road conditions with the air conditioning on throughout the journey. The displayed fuel consumption was 7.2L/100km, which is close to the official combined fuel consumption figure. Fuel economy performance meets expectations. Regarding noise control, the engine noise at idle is minimal, while wind noise and tire noise become slightly noticeable during high-speed driving, though they do not hinder conversation inside the car. Overall, noise levels are on par with other vehicles in its class.
In terms of safety configurations, the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 V comes standard with 7 airbags, ABS anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and ACC adaptive cruise control system. Comprehensive safety features provide sufficient protection for family users.
In summary, the 2025 Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 V demonstrates balanced performance in terms of space, configuration, and reliability. Compared to competitors like the Honda HR-V, while it does not excel in power or tech features, it is more affordable and offers higher resale value from the Toyota brand. Compared to the Nissan X-Trail, it has slightly less space but better fuel efficiency and lower maintenance costs. It is suitable for families prioritizing practicality, fuel economy, and brand reliability, especially for daily urban commuting and weekend outings.
As a family-oriented compact SUV, the 2025 Corolla Cross 1.8 V has no significant shortcomings but lacks standout features in terms of power and tech configurations. If you're looking for a well-rounded vehicle with low operating costs, this model is worth considering. However, if you have high demands for power or a large central control screen, it is recommended to compare other competing models. Overall, it is a practical choice for family use.
