2021 BMW iX3 M Sport Impressive Review

Entering 2024, the options in Malaysia's luxury pure electric SUV market are gradually becoming more diverse. However, D-segment models still focus on balanced performance and brand power as their core competitive points — after all, customers in this segment want the technological appeal of an electric vehicle while refusing to compromise on the comfort of traditional luxury cars. The BMW iX3 M Sport Impressive is designed to meet this demand, not only continuing BMW's hallmark driving dynamics but also maximizing luxury features, while offering an official range of 461 kilometers. In this test drive, I want to see whether it can truly balance the dual attributes of being both "electric" and "BMW" in scenarios like daily commuting, highway cruising, and family use.
In terms of appearance, the iX3 M Sport Impressive retains the classic profile of the BMW X3, but the electrified design details give it a distinct identity. The front features a closed double kidney grille, accented with blue trim that directly signifies its status as an electric vehicle. The sharp lines of the front bumper, combined with large air intakes on both sides, enhance the sporty feel of the M Sport version. The side profile maintains the sleek proportions of the X3, with 20-inch dual five-spoke alloy wheels paired with 275/40 R20 wide tires, providing a full-bodied visual effect and a solid foundation for driving dynamics. The shoulder line extends from the front to the rear, while the concave design at the bottom of the doors adds a sense of depth to the side profile. Changes at the rear are also evident: the traditional exhaust pipes have been removed and replaced by a simple rear bumper design, complemented by smoked LED taillights and the "i" badge on the tailgate. The overall style is sporty yet luxurious. As for the lighting system, LED headlights with automatic adjustment come as standard across the range. Their brightness and range at night are excellent, and the daytime running lights adopt BMW's signature angel eye design, delivering premium recognizability.
Sitting inside, the luxurious feel of the iX3 M Sport Impressive is immediately apparent. The interior features BMW's signature layout, with the center console angled toward the driver for easy operation. Extensive soft-touch materials paired with metallic trim deliver a refined tactile experience, and the stitching craftsmanship maintains BMW's high standards. Key configurations include a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen forming a dual-screen setup. The displays are clear, and the vehicle's infotainment system supports CarPlay and Android Auto integration, providing smooth operation and fast responsiveness. The HUD head-up display is standard, projecting real-time information like speed and navigation to reduce the need for the driver to look away from the road. The Harman Kardon 16-speaker audio system exhibits outstanding sound quality, with distinct and balanced highs and lows, perfect for music enthusiasts. The seat configuration is another highlight: the front seats support electric adjustment, heating, and driver memory functions, and their cushions and backrests provide excellent support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 split configuration, and for passengers around 175cm tall seated in the rear, there is about two fist-widths of legroom and one fist-width of headroom left, fully meeting the needs of family users. Regarding storage space, the front armrest box offers ample capacity, the door storage bins can fit two bottles of mineral water, and the trunk provides a regular capacity of 510L, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, making it highly practical.
The dynamic driving section shows that the iX3 M Sport Impressive is equipped with a rear-mounted single motor, delivering a maximum horsepower of 286PS and a peak torque of 400N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.8 seconds. During actual driving, the power response at the start is very immediate. A slight press on the accelerator offers a noticeable push-back feeling, and even when overtaking at high speeds, pressing the accelerator deeper still provides continuous power output, fully capable of handling daily usage scenarios. There are three driving modes available: ECO Pro, Comfort, and Sport. In ECO Pro mode, power output is relatively gentle, suitable for daily commuting; Comfort mode balances power and comfort and is the most commonly used mode; in Sport mode, the throttle response is more sensitive, and the steering feel becomes heavier, adding a degree of driving fun. Regarding the chassis, the combination of the front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned by BMW, leans towards a firm feel but maintains comfort: when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension quickly filters out most of the vibrations without noticeable recoil; when cornering, the body roll is very well-controlled, and the rear-driven layout enhances the tail's follow-through, giving drivers enough confidence. The braking system also performs steadily, with a linear feel to the brake pedal. During emergency braking, the vehicle's posture remains stable, with no obvious "nodding" phenomenon.
In terms of range, the official CLTC range is 461 kilometers. During this test drive, which mainly involved switching between urban roads and highways with the air conditioning and audio system continuously on, the final range achievement rate was approximately 85%—urban commuting energy consumption was about 18kWh/100km, while at highway cruising at 120km/h, the energy consumption rose to 22kWh/100km. Overall, this performance meets expectations. Noise control is a strong point of the iX3: even at a highway speed of 120km/h, wind and tire noise are well suppressed, with only slight electric current noise entering the cabin. Combined with seats that offer good support, long drives won't feel tiring. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels, with the highest level of recovery being close to a single-pedal driving mode, but without a noticeable dragging sensation. Once accustomed to it, it can reduce the use of the brakes.
In summary, the BMW iX3 M Sport Impressive's core advantages are very prominent: it retains BMW's driving dynamics while fulfilling users' comfort needs with its rich luxury configurations. The 461-kilometer range can also meet the daily needs of most families. Compared with the Mercedes EQC and Audi Q4 e-tron in the same class, the iX3's rear-drive layout brings a purer driving experience, and its standard features such as HUD, Harman Kardon sound system, and 360-degree panoramic imaging make it more advantageous in terms of value for money.
The target audience for this car is very clear: If you are a luxury car user who values brand strength and handling performance while wanting to transition to an electric vehicle experience; or if you need an SUV that balances daily commuting and family outings without compromising on luxury and practicality, then the iX3 M Sport Impressive will be a great choice. It does not deliberately emphasize the "electric" label but instead offers a "BMW-style" balanced performance, presenting another answer to the luxury electric SUV segment.
