2021 BMW X3 sDrive20i Review

In Malaysia's luxury mid-size SUV market, the BMW X3 has always been a popular choice among family users and young professionals. The 2021 X3 sDrive20i, as the entry-level model, attracts many budget-conscious consumers who still seek brand value and practicality with its relatively affordable pricing (RM 286,674) and comprehensive luxury features. After getting hold of the car, we focused on testing its daily driving quality, space practicality, and whether its configuration truly lives up to the reputation of "entry-level but not low-spec." Let's see if it has enough competitiveness among models in the same price range.
In terms of appearance, the 2021 X3 sDrive20i continues the brand's classic rugged style, with straight and strong overall lines that align with the stable positioning of a mid-size SUV. The front features moderately sized kidney grilles paired with sharp LED headlamps on both sides, giving it a distinctive look. The silver skid plate below the bumper and the air intake design on both sides add a touch of sportiness. The side profile showcases a waistline running through from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 19-inch alloy wheels (front tire specification 245/50 R19), creating a balanced and non-bulky proportion. At the rear, L-shaped LED taillights echo the design of the front, while the rear bumper also includes a silver skid plate. The dual-exit exhaust layout enhances its identity as an SUV. The overall design avoids excessive flamboyance and aligns well with the brand's aesthetics, making it stylish yet enduring.
Stepping into the cabin, the first thing you notice is the typical BMW interior layout—simple and functional. The center console is tilted towards the driver for easier operation. In terms of materials, the seats and interior door panels are wrapped in leather, offering a soft touch, while the upper part of the dashboard uses soft-touch materials, which matches the positioning of a luxury brand. Key configuration highlights include a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel with clear display and switchable interfaces for different driving modes, as well as an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that supports gesture controls and CarPlay connectivity. The interface is intuitive and highly responsive. The front seats offer electric adjustments (the driver’s seat comes with memory functionality) and have well-padded cushioning with excellent support, ensuring comfortable long drives without fatigue. The rear seats feature a 40:20:40 split design, with adjustable backrest angles. A passenger standing 175 cm tall would have around two fists of legroom and more than one fist of headroom, meaning even a full load won't feel cramped. As for storage space, the door pockets can hold two water bottles, the central armrest box offers moderate capacity, the rear center armrest has cup holders, and the trunk provides a standard capacity of 550L, which can be expanded to 1600L by folding down the rear seats. This is adequate for family trips or transporting larger items.
As for powertrain, the 2021 X3 sDrive20i is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 184PS and a peak torque of 290N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the throttle responds quickly, making starts feel brisk, and the smooth power output at low RPM (maximum torque is available from 1350rpm) is suitable for urban commuting. Switching to sport mode delays gear shifts and enhances throttle sensitivity, providing a more pronounced acceleration experience and boosting confidence when overtaking. With an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8.2 seconds, it ranks above average among low-powered 2.0T models in the same class. Regarding fuel efficiency, after driving 100 km in urban traffic and 100 km on the highway, the combined fuel consumption was approximately 7.8L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.1L/100km. However, considering the vehicle's weight and real-world driving conditions, this performance is acceptable.
Handling and chassis performance are BMW's strong points, and the X3 sDrive20i is no exception. The steering wheel is precise, with minimal dead zone and noticeable speed-sensing steering gain. It feels light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, providing a strong sense of control. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup, tuned for comfort while retaining a certain level of support. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension filters out most minor vibrations, and the body exhibits no significant excess bouncing. During cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range, tire grip is sufficient, and overall stability is good. In terms of noise control, the cabin is quiet at low speeds, and although wind and tire noise increase at high speeds, it does not affect normal conversations, meeting the standards of a luxury SUV. Braking performance is stable, with a linear brake pedal feel, and during emergency braking, the body posture remains steady with no significant forward lurching.
In summary, the core advantage of the 2021 BMW X3 sDrive20i lies in its balanced product strengths: it combines the quality and handling DNA of a luxury brand with the space and practicality needed for family use. The configuration has not been reduced despite being an entry-level model (features like a fully digital instrument cluster, electric seats, and three-zone air conditioning are all standard equipment). Compared to competing models in the same class, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 and Audi Q5L 40 TFSI, the X3 sDrive20i offers better handling and cost-effectiveness. Its price is slightly lower than the other two, yet the configurations are nearly equivalent.
This car is clearly well-suited for two groups of people: firstly, families who value brand, space, and handling, making it suitable for daily commutes and weekend trips; secondly, young professionals who need the practicality of an SUV but are unwilling to compromise on driving pleasure. However, if you demand more power, you might consider the higher-powered xDrive30i version. For most users, though, the sDrive20i's power is sufficient.
Overall, the 2021 BMW X3 sDrive20i is a "well-balanced" contender with no obvious shortcomings. Its harmonious performance ensures it remains highly competitive in the luxury mid-size SUV market.
