In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's compact SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Family users have continuously raised their demands for practicality, safety, and configuration balance in vehicles. The C-Segment SUV has become a core consideration for most families when purchasing a car. The 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite, as a popular contender in this segment, highlights its full-time AWD system, 7-airbag safety configuration, and high cost-effectiveness as key selling points, attracting the attention of many consumers. This test drive will assess whether this car meets the daily needs of Malaysian family users in terms of static design, space performance, and dynamic driving experience.

In terms of exterior design, the 2021 Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite continues Subaru's rugged design style, with simple and smooth body lines. The front end features a hexagonal grille paired with a black honeycomb mesh grille, while its sharp LED headlights seamlessly connect to the grille, enhancing its visual width. On the side, the body’s waistline extends from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, exuding stability without losing its dynamic appeal. At the rear, the L-shaped LED tail lights offer high recognition when illuminated, and the silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds a touch of off-road vibe. Speaking of the lighting system, the entire series comes standard with LED headlights, daytime running lights, and front and rear fog lights. The automatic headlight function is capable of self-adjusting in tunnels or cloudy conditions, which is highly practical.

Inside, the interior features black as the predominant color, accented by silver trims, creating a practical overall style. The center console has a simple layout and is equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system on top, offering decent touch sensitivity, as well as Bluetooth connectivity and basic multimedia functions. The steering wheel is multifunctional, with audio control and voice assistant buttons on the left, and cruise control system on the right, along with paddle shifters at the back to enhance driving pleasure. As for the seats, both the driver and front passenger seats offer 8-way electric adjustment. The leather seats provide good cushioning and support, ensuring comfort even on long trips. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding design. When folded, a flat storage space is created with the trunk, significantly expanding storage capacity. Regarding space performance, the car measures 4625mm in length, 1815mm in width, and 1730mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2670mm. The front row provides approximately one-and-a-half fists of headroom, while the rear row offers two fists of legroom, ensuring comfortable seating even for passengers up to 180cm tall. The trunk's standard capacity is 520L, which is sufficient for daily shopping or short trips. In terms of details, both the front and rear rows come with USB charging ports and cup holders, while the dual-zone automatic air conditioning in the front and independent rear air outlets ensure balanced cabin temperature.

In terms of power, the new car is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 156PS and a peak torque of 196N·m, paired with a CVT transmission and a full-time AWD system. During daily driving, the initial acceleration response is relatively smooth, the low-rev power output is adequate for daily commuting, and the CVT transmission performs linearly during acceleration without noticeable lag. When switched to sport mode, the throttle response becomes more responsive, and the addition of paddle shifters allows for simulated manual shifting, enhancing driving engagement. However, when overtaking at high speeds, due to the characteristics of a naturally aspirated engine, the accelerator must be pressed down in advance as the power reserve is slightly insufficient. In terms of handling, the steering wheel is accurate with minimal play, while the suspension system—featuring MacPherson independent suspension at the front and double wishbone independent suspension at the rear—is tuned for comfort. It effectively absorbs road vibrations and maintains vehicle stability through curves without excessive body roll. Regarding fuel consumption, the official composite fuel consumption is 7.4L/100km; during the test drive, urban consumption was approximately 8.5L/100km, and highway consumption dropped to 6.8L/100km, which met expectations overall.

In terms of driving comfort, the vehicle's noise control is well-done. At speeds below 80km/h, tire noise and engine noise are not noticeable. Wind noise increases slightly at high speeds, but it does not affect conversations inside the car. The braking system performs stably, with a moderate brake pedal travel, linear braking force output, and good body posture maintained during emergency braking. Additionally, the minimum ground clearance of 220mm allows it to have some level of off-road capability when dealing with muddy rural roads or light off-road conditions in Malaysia. The full-time all-wheel-drive system also improves driving stability on slippery roads. In terms of safety features, the new car comes standard with 7 airbags, forward collision warning, ABS anti-lock braking system, and rear parking sensors. Combined with Subaru's consistent safety reputation, it provides comprehensive protection for passengers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite lie in its full-time all-wheel-drive system, rich safety features, and spacious interior. Compared to similar models like the CR-V or RAV4, its all-wheel-drive system stands out, making it suitable for users who frequently drive on unpaved roads. Additionally, the 7 airbags and active safety features are more comprehensive than some competitors. However, in terms of power output and technological features, it falls slightly behind models equipped with turbocharged engines or hybrid systems. This car is more suitable for family users who value safety, practical space, and mild off-road capabilities, especially those who often travel with family members or occasionally go on countryside trips. If you are looking for a well-balanced, practical, safe, and reliable compact SUV, the 2021 Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite is worth considering.

Pros
Interior design is considerate, leather seats are comfortable and not hot, the front row electric adjustment is convenient, and the dual-zone automatic air conditioning is practical
Central control screen responds quickly, CarPlay connection is smooth, daily navigation operation is not laggy
Full-time four-wheel drive system is stable, performs excellently on bumpy mountain roads and slippery road conditions
Cons
2.0 naturally aspirated engine has sluggish acceleration, and power response during high-speed overtaking is slow
Occasional lag in the central control screen, especially when connecting to CarPlay
Front-end design is conservative and not aggressive enough, which may not meet the aesthetic preferences of some young people

Owner of 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite
As an owner of the 2021 Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite for almost two years, I sincerely feel that Subaru really nailed it when it comes to the interior! The weather in Malaysia is hot, and the first thing I love to do when I get in the car is to touch the seats — the leather seats are so soft, and they don’t get as scorching as plastic seats in the summer. Plus, the front seats are electrically adjustable. For someone like me who often adjusts the seating position, pressing a button to find a comfortable position precisely is so much more convenient than turning knobs manually. The central control screen is also very responsive — when I connect CarPlay to navigate to KLCC or Johor Bahru checkpoints, everything is smooth without any lag. The air conditioning is dual-zone automatic; my wife likes it at 18 degrees because she gets hot easily, while I set mine to 22 degrees — each manages their own without interfering with the other. These thoughtful details are great. I rate the interior 5 out of 5, no complaints! As for the performance, I’d rate it 4 out of 5 — mainly because of the acceleration. After all, it’s a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine. On Malaysian highways, when I want to overtake those big trucks, I have to wait a little after stepping on the gas for the power to kick in. It’s not like turbocharged cars that just zoom forward instantly. That said, its full-time all-wheel drive is really stable! Last time I went to Cameron Highlands, the roads in the mountains were bumpy and slippery. My friend driving a two-wheel-drive car had to be extra careful, but I could just drive straight over without any hesitation, and the car didn’t skid at all. During cornering, it felt very solid, like the car was gripping the road tightly. Normally in the city, the CVT gearbox is smooth enough; when stuck in traffic or following cars closely, it doesn’t feel jerky. Overall, the performance is more than adequate, just that the acceleration is a little sluggish — otherwise, it would be perfect!

Owner of 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite
As the owner of the 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite, driving in Malaysia for almost two years, the overall experience has been quite comfortable! First, compliments to the exterior: a solid 5 out of 5, and well deserved—The sporty GT Lite body kit + 17-inch wheels make it stand out among the sea of "ordinary SUVs." The LED headlights are highly recognizable even during the daytime, and every time I park at KLCC, people give it a second glance. As someone who values appearance, I’m really satisfied! Performance gets 4 stars, mainly because the roads in Malaysia are quite challenging: on highways in Selangor, the CVT transmission is smooth, but acceleration isn’t particularly "punchy." The 0-100km/h time of 10.3 seconds is sufficient for daily use but don’t expect thrilling pushback. However, the full-time AWD is fantastic! Last time I went to Cameron Highlands on those bumpy mountain roads, my friend’s 2WD vehicle slipped, but my Forester stayed rock solid. The 220mm ground clearance makes speed bumps and water-logged puddles a breeze, especially handy on rural roads during the rainy season. The interior also gets 4 stars: the leather seats + dual-zone air conditioning are very thoughtful—Malaysia is over 30°C year-round, and the car cools down within 5 minutes of turning on the AC. The rear AC vents ensure family members don’t complain about the heat on long drives. However, the response time of the central touchscreen can be a bit slow at times, especially when connecting to CarPlay. If this could be optimized, it would be perfect. Safety must have 4 stars! The 7 airbags + front collision warning system are essential in Malaysia’s "sudden lane-change" traffic. For example, last time in George Town, Penang, the car ahead suddenly braked hard. My car alerted me and lightly braked automatically, almost avoiding a rear-end collision. The reverse camera is also convenient for parking in Kuala Lumpur’s narrow lanes, though a 360-degree camera would make it even better (but the standard rear sensors are sufficient). Overall, this car is really suitable for family use in Malaysia. It’s stylish, steady with its AWD, and well-equipped in safety features. The minor shortcomings don’t affect everyday usability at all. I recommend it to friends who want something practical but a little unique!

Owner of 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite
As the owner of the 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, the two aspects I want to talk about the most are its appearance and safety. Let's talk about the appearance first. I give it 4 stars because it belongs to the "timeless" category — it’s not stunning at first glance, but the more you look at it, the more appealing it becomes. Malaysia’s rainy seasons and scorching weather can be tough on car paint, but the pearl white finish of this car has remained bright over the past two years without significant yellowing. The GT Lite version’s sporty body kit and 17-inch wheels manage to keep a low profile when driving in downtown Kuala Lumpur, yet they feel energetic when going mountain driving in the suburbs. The only aspect I think could be improved is the front-end design; if it could be made a bit more aggressive, it would better suit the aesthetics of younger drivers. As for safety, it definitely deserves a full score! Last month on the Penang highway, I encountered a sudden situation where the car in front of me braked hard, and I didn’t react in time. The EyeSight system immediately stepped in and brought my car to a stop, leaving less than half a meter of distance to the car in front — it truly saved my life. During traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, the adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist functions are particularly useful. They free up your legs while also preventing you from veering off course. The 7 airbags included in this car are excellent for its price range, and I feel especially secure when taking my family on self-driving trips to the East Coast. All in all, this car performs very reliably under Malaysian road conditions. Its appearance is understated, but its safety features are top-notch. It’s really suitable for family use.

Owner of 2021 Subaru Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite
As the owner of the 2021 Forester 2.0i-L GT Lite, having driven it for almost two years, I truly feel this car is just perfect for Malaysia! First of all, I have to give full marks for the interior! The seats are genuine leather, and the front row has 8-way power adjustment. Sitting in traffic for one to two hours in Kuala Lumpur, my back doesn't feel sore at all. The central control screen responds quickly, and the air conditioning is dual-zone automatic. I’m afraid of the cold while my wife feels hot, so adjusting our own temperatures is super convenient. The rear seat space is also very spacious. On weekends, we take our parents to Malacca, and when they sit in the back, they can stretch their legs straight and say it's much more comfortable than the old car at home. Performance deserves 4 stars. The 2.0L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT is very smooth to drive in the city. On highways, you need to press the accelerator a bit hard to overtake, but it's completely sufficient for daily use. The full-time AWD is absolutely awesome! Last time we went to Genting Highlands, it was raining and there were many curves on the mountain road, but the car stayed very stable without any slipping. Fuel consumption is about 7.5L/100km, using RON 95 petrol. It’s slightly more fuel-efficient than my friend's CR-V and still acceptable. Safety gets full marks for sure! With 7 airbags and forward collision warning, it’s super reliable. Last time in Penang, I almost rear-ended another car, but the vehicle braked on its own — it gave me a scare, but it probably saved a life. The reverse camera is clear, and it’s very easy to back into tight parking spaces in Kuala Lumpur. In conclusion, this car is absolutely suitable for family use — safe, comfortable, and worry-free. I highly recommend it to friends who are thinking about upgrading to an SUV!
