As one of the top choices for Malaysian family users, the B-Segment sedan market has always been fiercely contested among various brands, with models that emphasize cost-efficiency as well as those highlighting advanced features. The 2021 Toyota Vios 1.5E has garnered much attention in this competitive segment by leveraging Toyota's brand reliability and upgraded smart features. This time, let us experience it firsthand to see if it truly meets local consumers' expectations for balance and practicality.

First, let’s take a look at the exterior. The 2021 Vios 1.5E continues with Toyota’s family-style design, featuring smooth overall lines and avoiding overly aggressive elements, making it a timeless and attractive choice. The front face adopts a large lower grille with chrome trim on the upper grille, enhancing its horizontal visual width. The sharp-shaped LED headlights are integrated with the grille, improving its recognizability. Automatic headlights and daytime running lights come standard, providing convenience for daily use. The side profile showcases lines extending from the front to the rear of the car, maintaining a harmonious proportion. The 16-inch wheels with 195/50 R16 tires have a practical design that is neither special nor excessive. At the rear, the LED taillights share a similarly sharp design that echoes the front lights. The layout of the rear fog lights and parking sensors is reasonable, and the overall exterior design suits the positioning of a B-Segment family car—neither too showy nor outdated.

Stepping inside, the interior leans towards a simple and practical style. The center console is covered with soft-touch materials, accented by silver trims to enhance the texture, making it slightly above average in its class. A 7-inch touchscreen serves as the visual center and features Sound Plus functionality, with decent operational smoothness. Commonly used features such as Bluetooth and USB connectivity are convenient. The instrument panel is a backlit analog display, offering clear and readily visible basic information. In terms of features, keyless entry, push-start ignition, and single-zone automatic air conditioning come standard. The front row is also equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet, which is highly practical for users needing to connect external devices. The seats are manually adjustable but offer a comfortable level of padding with adequate support. The rear seats can be split in a 60:40 configuration to expand the trunk space. As for the space itself, with a wheelbase of 2550mm, it falls within mainstream standards for the B-Segment. A passenger measuring 175cm sitting in the rear will have about two fistfuls of legroom, and headroom doesn't feel cramped either. The trunk offers a capacity of 506 liters, sufficient for storing several suitcases or a baby stroller, meeting the storage needs of most families.

In terms of performance, the 2021 Vios 1.5E is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 107PS and peak torque at 4200rpm, paired with a CVT transmission. During actual driving, the power response at initial acceleration is relatively smooth, making it suitable for daily city commuting. When the accelerator is pressed harder and the engine revs surpass 3000rpm, the power output becomes more pronounced. For overtaking, it requires a preemptive throttle input, and once the revs are higher, the acceleration performance is acceptable. The CVT transmission offers good smoothness, with gear shifts experiencing almost no noticeable jerks, making everyday driving seamless. There are two driving modes—Eco and Normal. In Eco mode, throttle response is softened, making it ideal for congested urban roads. Normal mode, on the other hand, is better for highway cruising. In terms of handling, the steering wheel is light and precise, allowing for agile lane changes or U-turns. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned towards comfort, effectively absorbing small road bumps. However, when going over speed bumps or large potholes, the vehicle does experience some noticeable vibrations, though they remain within an acceptable range. Regarding fuel consumption, our tests showed about 6.5L/100km in congested urban areas, while highway cruising brought it down to 5.2L/100km. The combined fuel consumption is close to the official figure of 5.8L/100km, showcasing excellent fuel economy.

During driving, the noise control performance is decent. At speeds below 60km/h, tire noise and wind noise are not noticeable. After exceeding 80km/h, wind noise gradually increases but does not affect communication inside the car. The seats are quite comfortable, and long rides do not feel tiring. Although the rear air vents are not standard, the single-zone automatic air conditioning provides sufficient cooling, and the overall cabin temperature is evenly controlled. Safety features are a major highlight of this car, with 7 airbags, vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, lane change assist, active braking, etc., all included as standard. The 360-degree panoramic camera is particularly handy during reverse or parallel parking, making it user-friendly for new drivers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2021 Toyota Vios 1.5E lie in its balanced performance and comprehensive safety configurations. Although power is not its strong suit, it is more than sufficient for everyday household use, and its fuel efficiency meets the needs of family users. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda City or Mazda 2, the Vios 1.5E offers more comprehensive safety features and a more competitive price, providing good value for money. This car is ideal for families that prioritize safety, practicality, and fuel economy, especially for daily commuting and occasional long-distance trips. It doesn't have any particularly glaring weaknesses and performs fairly well in all aspects. If you're looking for a reliable, fuel-efficient, and adequately equipped family sedan, the 2021 Vios 1.5E is a great choice.

Pros
The interior is practical and user-friendly, with a 7-inch touchscreen that responds quickly and provides smooth CarPlay connectivity. The 60:40 split rear seats are flexible and offer ample storage.
Performance is well-suited to local road conditions, with a smooth CVT transmission. Power is sufficient for city traffic and uphill driving.
Fuel consumption is excellent, approximately 5.8-6.5L/100km in the city and as low as 5.3L on the highway, offering strong range capability.
Cons
The interior has a heavy plastic feel, with the center console and door panels mostly made of hard plastic, lacking soft-wrapped materials, appearing cheap.
The power output is limited; the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine lacks power when overtaking at high speeds or climbing while fully loaded, requiring higher RPM.
Seat adjustment is inconvenient; in some models, the seats are manually adjustable, making the operation relatively labor-intensive.

As the owner of the 2021 Vios 1.5E for almost two years, I feel that both the interior and performance score a solid "4 out of 5". Let's start with the interior. While it's not a luxury model, the daily-use details are quite thoughtful: the 7-inch touchscreen is responsive, and connecting CarPlay for navigation to KLCC or Port Klang works smoothly. The 60:40 split rear seats are adequate for carrying small luggage occasionally (like a box of durians for my mom). However, there is quite a bit of plastic, especially the hard plastic on the passenger side, which sometimes feels a bit "cheap" when my elbow brushes against it. But considering the price range, it's still reasonable. As for performance, it's truly sufficient for the road conditions in Malaysia. During weekday morning traffic jams in PJ, the CVT gearbox operates very smoothly without any jerking. On weekends when taking family near the foothills of Genting, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine isn't exactly "high-powered," but as long as you step on the gas properly, it climbs steadily without feeling sluggish. Fuel consumption is also satisfying — about 6.5L/100km in the city and roughly 5.3L on the highway. A full tank (42L) can take me from Kuala Lumpur to Penang without stopping midway, which is very reassuring. Overall, as a family car, it hasn't let me down in these two aspects. I just wish the details could be a bit more refined to make it even better!

As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Vios 1.5E, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, the thing I’m most satisfied with is its exterior and interior! The exterior really suits the urban landscape of Malaysia — especially the sharp LED headlights on the front. When commuting past the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur in the morning, the sunlight makes it look especially energetic. The car's sleek lines make it stand out in outdoor parking lots in Klang Valley. Compared to the surrounding cars, it always looks more refined. Every time my friends get in my car, their first comment is always, “This car looks more premium than its actual price.” The interior is even more impressive! Although it's a B-segment car, the layout of the center console is very user-friendly. The 7-inch touchscreen is easy to use, making it a breeze to play music or connect CarPlay when stuck in traffic on the LDP highway. The seat materials feel comfortable, and during Kuala Lumpur's hot summer, when I turn on the automatic air conditioning after getting in, the seats don't feel stuffy at all. The rear space is just right for our family. On weekends when I take my parents to Johor Bahru to visit relatives, they find it comfortable for the over-an-hour journey without feeling cramped. The 60:40 split folding seats are the most convenient feature—last time I went to IKEA to buy small furniture, I folded down the rear seats and easily fit everything in, completely eliminating the need to call for delivery services. In short, the exterior and interior of this car at this price point are simply impeccable—driving it every day lifts my mood!

As a 2021 Vios 1.5E owner, I have been driving in Malaysia for almost two years, here’s my honest review~ First, let’s praise the safety! Full marks in this aspect! During Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, traffic jams can leave you at a standstill. There was one time on Jalan Ampang when I was following a car too closely, and the car in front suddenly braked hard. My car instantly activated the emergency braking system and stopped with a "thud," leaving just a few centimeters between me and the car ahead! When driving on the East Coast Highway, the lane departure warning system is also very responsive, alerting me the moment I slightly touch the white lines. Along with 7 airbags and a 360-degree camera, every time I carry my family on long trips, I feel very reassured. As for the exterior, 4 out of 5 would be a fair rating. Toyota’s design isn’t exactly stunning, but it’s durable and visually pleasing — the LED headlights are bright enough even during rainy days in Penang. The daytime running lights add a sleek touch. Parking under the flat makes the car look neither too flashy nor dated. My friends say it has the “typical Toyota practical aesthetic,” which I find just right. For the interior, also 4 out of 5. The materials do have a slightly plastic feel, especially the dashboard, but it’s practical! During Kuala Lumpur’s hot summers, the single-zone automatic air conditioning cools super quickly. The 7-inch touchscreen with CarPlay connectivity works seamlessly, navigating to Petaling Street for delicious foods never lags. The rear seats fold 60:40 — last time I helped my mom move some potted plants, and it was surprisingly spacious. The only downside is that the seats are manually adjustable, which can be a bit of a hassle occasionally, but it's more than enough for daily use. Overall, as a family car, this Vios performs excellently under Malaysian road conditions~

As the owner of the 2021 Vios 1.5E and having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, the interior and performance can be described as "adequate and worry-free." The interior gets a 4-star rating because the details are quite thoughtful: the 7-inch touchscreen responds well, and connecting to CarPlay for navigation in the small alleys of George Town, Penang is very convenient; the 60:40 split rear seats make it flexible when needing to put a stroller or camping gear — just pull, and they fold down, which is much more adaptable than fixed seats. However, the plastic feel is quite noticeable; the dashboard and door panels feel hard to the touch. It would be better if some soft materials were added, but considering the price point (around RM80k), it’s reasonable. In terms of performance, it’s sufficient for local road conditions: the 1.5L NA engine combined with the CVT is smooth to drive, and it doesn’t jerk when following cars in Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour traffic. Press the accelerator a bit harder, and overtaking a lorry isn’t difficult either. On the highway at 110km/h, it feels very stable, though the noise becomes more noticeable when the engine revs reach 2500 RPM, but it doesn’t affect conversations. Fuel consumption is also satisfying; in the city with the aircon on, it’s approximately 6.2L/100km. A full tank (42L) can go over 600 kilometers, so there’s no need to frequently visit the gas station. Overall, as a family car, it handles Malaysian roads perfectly well without major issues. If there were further upgrades to some details, it would be even better!

As the owner of a 2021 Toyota Vios 1.5E, I've been driving it for almost two years under Malaysian road conditions, and it has been quite handy! Let me talk about the exterior first: I gladly give it a 5 out of 5—the large trapezoidal grille at the front with chrome trim makes it stand out in the traffic flow in KL, and the LED headlights have a very high recognition level when lit during the day. Friends often say it looks more "premium" compared to cars in the same price range. The side profile is also smooth, with 16-inch rims paired with 195 tires; whether parked under the apartment or in the mall parking lot, it looks classy. Every time I lock the car and see the electric folding side mirrors retract, I feel I made the right choice! I give the performance a 4 out of 5 because it's sufficient for daily use but not surprising—the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine feels quite light and nimble in the city. The CVT gearbox shifts smoothly, and during rush hour traffic jams on Jalan Ampang, following other cars is effortless. Fuel consumption is steady at about 5.8L, and a full tank lasts for more than a week, which is very reassuring. However, on the North-South highway, when overtaking, you have to step on the gas pedal in advance to downshift as there's a slight delay in power delivery. If you're climbing Genting Highlands with a full load of five people, you need to rev above 4000 RPM to have enough power. This aspect surely can't compare to turbocharged cars, but it's completely adequate for family use!
