The Malaysia B-segment MPV market has always been a hotly contested area among family users, requiring both economic efficiency for daily commuting and adequate space for multi-person travel. The 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version, as a popular candidate in this segment, returns this time with a more youthful design and upgraded features. Many consumers are curious whether it can continue its previous high cost-performance advantage. The primary goal of our test drive this time is to verify whether it has made substantial improvements in static experience, dynamic performance, and daily practicality, providing potential buyers with a clear reference.

From the exterior, the overall style of the new car is sharper than the old model. The front features a large trapezoidal grille, filled with black honeycomb trim strips. The LED headlight clusters on either side are connected to the grille by a chrome trim strip, enhancing the visual width and significantly increasing its recognition compared to the old model. The side profile of the vehicle features smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear that adds a sense of layering. The design of the 16-inch alloy wheels also appears more refined than the previous model. At the rear, the horizontally arranged LED taillight clusters echo the front fascia, while a silver skid plate is added to the lower part of the rear bumper, making the rear look more solid. Overall, the exterior design has shed the rounded feel of the old model, aligning more with the aesthetics of today's youth.

Stepping inside, the changes to the interior are equally notable. The dashboard features a floating 10-inch touchscreen with a simple interface layout, supporting both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, with smooth operation. Below the central screen, some physical buttons are retained for easier blind operation while driving. The seats are wrapped in leather material, with the front seats offering manual adjustments. The cushions and backrests are relatively soft, providing decent seating comfort. As for materials, the upper section of the dashboard and the inner sides of the door panels are covered with soft-touch materials, which feel significantly improved compared to the old model, though there is still room for improvement in the texture of certain plastic components.

Space performance has always been a traditional advantage of the Avanza, and this time the new car features a wheelbase of 2750mm, which is 50mm longer than the previous model. The front-row seating space is ample; after a passenger with a height of 175cm adjusts the seat, there is still one fist of headroom left. The rear seating space is even more noteworthy; a passenger of the same height can enjoy two-fists worth of legroom and one fist of headroom when seated, and it does not feel cramped even with three adults sitting in the back. The rear is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB charging ports for added practicality. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 380L, which can be expanded to 830L by folding down the second-row seats, making it sufficient for family shopping or short trips.

In terms of power, the new car is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 77kW (105PS) and a peak torque of 138N·m, paired with a CVT gearbox. From the actual driving experience, the power response during initial acceleration is smooth, suitable for urban commutes. During low to medium-speed acceleration, the power output is linear, and the CVT transmission provides good smoothness with virtually no sense of jerking. When the accelerator is pressed hard, the engine noise becomes more pronounced, but the power improvement is limited, requiring sufficient distance for overtaking at high speeds. The driving modes include economic and sport options; in sport mode, throttle response is slightly more sensitive, but overall, the power performance remains focused on comfort.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is light, with relatively precise directionality, making it suitable for female drivers or congested urban traffic conditions. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most minor vibrations, but when encountering larger potholes, rear-seat passengers will feel noticeable bumps. When driving on curves, the body roll control is average, and the suspension lacks support. Confidence during fast cornering is not very strong.

Fuel efficiency is a major concern for family users. We drove 50km each in congested urban traffic and highway conditions, resulting in a combined fuel consumption of 6.8L/100km. This performance is considered average among models in the same class. Regarding noise control, the cabin is relatively quiet at low speeds, but at high speeds, wind and tire noise become obvious inside, affecting the riding experience.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version are its spaciousness, practical features, and affordable pricing. Compared to its peer, the Honda BR-V, it has a longer wheelbase and more spacious rear seating; compared to the Perodua Alza, it has superior brand influence and interior quality. However, its shortcomings lie in its mediocre performance and average noise control.

This car is suitable for family users who prioritize practical space, especially those who frequently travel with multiple passengers. Its cost-effectiveness stands out in the B-segment MPV market, offering configurations that meet daily usage needs and spaciousness that is among the best in its class. If you are after performance or luxury, this may not be the best choice, but if your core needs are spaciousness and practicality, then the Avanza Upcoming Version is worth considering.

In summary, the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version is a pragmatic family MPV. Its upgrades in space and features make it more competitive. While there is room for improvement in terms of performance and quality, given its positioning and price, it remains a popular choice in this segment of the market.

Pros
The exterior design is eye-catching, featuring a large grille with chrome trim. The body lines are sleek, making it stand out in traffic with a high rate of second glances.
City driving is smooth. The 1.5L engine is sufficient for daily commuting, the throttle response is not slow, and it follows traffic smoothly during congestion.
The air conditioning cooling effect is excellent. It can quickly lower the temperature in Malaysia’s high-temperature weather, meeting the needs of hot environments.
Cons
Insufficient climbing power when fully loaded, lacking power when carrying passengers or luggage uphill, requiring downshifting in advance
Many interior plastic parts, the central control panel and door panels are mostly hard plastic, and some models lack soft armrest boxes
Some design details need optimization, such as small front passenger storage compartment and insufficient number of rear ISOFIX interfaces

Owner of 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version
As an owner of the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version for half a year in Malaysia, today I’ll share my real driving experience~ Firstly, I must give full marks for the appearance! The large trapezoidal grille at the front with chrome trim looks particularly eye-catching in KL traffic. The side waistline is also very sleek, and every time I park near the LRT station, people take a second look. My friends all say it’s much more refined than the old model. In terms of performance, it’s good enough for local use. The 1.5L petrol engine is very smooth in city traffic, and the throttle response is not sluggish. On weekends, it handles family trips to Genting Highlands mid-hill overtakes stably, but when fully loaded on steep slopes, it feels a bit underpowered. However, for daily commuting and short trips, it’s entirely sufficient. A score of 4 feels just right. The interior maintains Toyota's usual practical style. The seats are fabric but feel soft and comfortable, and even in Kuala Lumpur’s traffic when sitting for a long time, it’s not uncomfortable. The central control screen is small, but CarPlay connects quickly. The air conditioning is super effective — in Malaysia's 35-degree weather, it cools down within three minutes of starting! However, there are quite a few plastic parts. If there could be a soft armrest box added, that would be even better. A score of 4 is reasonable. As for safety, I feel quite assured. Last time on the Penang highway, I almost rear-ended someone due to following too closely, but the pre-collision system automatically applied the brakes for me! Plus, the vehicle stability system ensured no skidding on wet, slippery mountain roads on the East Coast during rainy days. It’s just missing a 360-degree surround view camera, so new drivers may need to be cautious when parking. Overall, 4 points of satisfaction. All in all, as a family B-segment car, it’s very worry-free to drive in Malaysia's road conditions, and the eye-catching appearance is its biggest highlight!

As the owner of the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version, after driving it in Malaysia for almost half a year, the thing that reassures me the most is its safety features! Last month, on the highway from Penang back to Kuala Lumpur, I suddenly encountered the car in front braking sharply. Before I could react, the car automatically triggered the emergency braking and came to a stop—it gave me a huge scare, but thankfully because of this feature, I avoided a rear-end collision. Later, I found out that it also has lane-keeping assistance. When I'm driving long distances on the North-South Expressway, it vibrates to alert me if I slightly veer off the lane. This feature is super practical, especially for someone like me who frequently drives on highways. Full marks for safety! As for the exterior, I think it’s moderate, so I’d give it 4 points. The front design is more refined compared to the old model, but the side profile still feels like a "boxy" family car. Although it’s convenient for parking in Malaysian cities and navigating through narrow alleys, younger people might find it not stylish enough. Last week, I drove my friends to Malacca, and one of them commented, “This car looks stable, but it would be better if it were more sporty”—and I agree. While it’s practical, the exterior lacks a design that makes it stand out. However, for a family car, it’s acceptable!

As the owner of the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version, having driven it in Malaysia for more than half a year, the overall experience meets local needs perfectly! The exterior deserves full marks! The new design looks way younger than the old model. The large grille in the front paired with LED lights makes it stand out in KL's traffic. Even the staff at the gas stations have asked if it’s the latest model. The body lines are also smoother, and when parked under my apartment, it really garners a lot of attention~ Performance gets a score of 4. It’s more than enough for daily driving. On Malaysia’s highways (like the North-South Expressway), it feels very stable at 110km/h, and stepping hard on the accelerator offers sufficient power for overtaking. However, during KL’s rush hour traffic jams, sometimes the initial acceleration feels a bit sluggish, but for family use, it’s completely fine, considering it’s not a performance car. The interior also scores 4. The layout of the dashboard is straightforward, with commonly used air-conditioning and audio buttons within easy reach. This is very user-friendly for someone like me who often operates with one hand. The seats are fabric, which might not be as premium as leather, but given Malaysia’s hot weather, fabric is actually more breathable and doesn’t feel stuffy during long periods of sitting. The only minor drawback is the glove compartment on the passenger side being a bit small—it can only fit a wallet and phone, leaving no space for a water bottle. If this could be improved, it’d be even better~ Overall, as a family-use B-segment car, it performs very well under Malaysia’s road conditions. With its eye-catching exterior, practicality, and adequate power, it’s definitely recommended!

Owner of 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version
As the owner of the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version, after driving in Malaysia for more than half a year, the overall experience has been quite satisfactory! Performance-wise, I’d give it a 4 — it follows traffic smoothly during rush hours in Kuala Lumpur city, and the 1.5L engine is more than sufficient for daily commuting. On the North-South Expressway, stepping harder on the accelerator allows it to keep pace while overtaking. However, when climbing steep slopes like Genting Highlands with five passengers on board, the power feels a bit lacking, and I have to downshift in advance. This is a slight downside. The interior definitely deserves a 5! The beige and black combination feels very cozy, the soft-touch materials on the central console feel very comfortable, and the layout of the instrument panel and the central screen is very intuitive. Even my mom, who doesn't drive often, can quickly get the hang of it. The rear space is spacious enough; every time I take my family to Johor Bahru for visits, three adults can sit comfortably without feeling cramped, which is a big bonus for a B-segment car. In terms of safety, I’d rate it 4 — it comes equipped with standard features like VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) and six airbags. The system intervened and helped stabilize the car last time when I almost lost control on slippery roads on a rainy day in Penang, which was very reassuring. However, it would be even better if it came with automatic emergency braking, especially since there are so many motorbikes in Malaysia, and they sometimes pop out of nowhere, which can be quite startling. For the exterior, I’d give it a 4 — the overall design is much younger compared to the previous model. The large grille on the front is very distinctive, and the body lines are sleek. Neighbors in the community often ask if this is a new model when they see it parked outside. However, the rear design feels a bit ordinary. If the taillights were a bit sharper, it would be perfect. All in all, as a family car, the Avanza performs very reliably on Malaysian roads and offers great value for money!

Owner of 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version
As the owner of the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version, after driving for more than half a year in Malaysia, the two points I want to discuss the most are safety and performance. Let's talk about safety first, I give it 4 stars because the overall performance is good, but there are minor details that can be better. Malaysia experiences frequent rain, and sudden water pooling often happens on highways. The vehicle's stability control system reacts quite quickly. Once while on the North-South Expressway, I suddenly hit a puddle, but the steering wheel hardly veered, and the brakes didn't skid, which is reassuring. However, the rear seat only has two ISOFIX anchors, which might not be enough if you have three children at home. I hope this can be improved. Now moving on to performance, it definitely deserves 5 stars! The road conditions in Malaysia are complex, and traffic jams are the norm in urban areas. The 1.5L engine of this car provides ample low-end torque, making it responsive when starting and following traffic. Even with the air conditioning on full blast, it doesn’t feel underpowered. Last month, I took my family to Genting Highlands. While climbing uphill, the transmission shifted smoothly. Even with five passengers and luggage, it didn’t feel strained. Moreover, the fuel consumption is quite impressive: around 6.5L/100km in the city, and 5.8L on the highway. For a family like ours that often travels on highways, it’s very fuel-efficient. Overall, under Malaysian driving conditions, the safety and performance of this car meet my needs, making it a very suitable vehicle for family use.
