In Malaysia's B-segment MPV market, the Toyota Avanza has always been a popular choice for family users, known for its reliable performance and practical space. The focus of this test drive is the 2022 Upcoming Version, which features a comprehensive upgrade to its interior configuration and minor optimizations to its power system. The goal is clear—to enhance the sense of technology and driving comfort while maintaining practicality. Our test primarily focuses on whether these upgrades genuinely improve day-to-day usability and whether its competitiveness among vehicles in the same class has been enhanced.

In terms of exterior, the 2022 Avanza Upcoming Version maintains the previous silhouette but has made adjustments in the details. The front now features a larger trapezoidal grille, filled with black honeycomb accents, paired with newly designed LED headlight clusters on both sides, giving it a younger overall visual appeal. The side profile of the vehicle remains simple, with a beltline extending from the front fender to the rear, and the new addition of 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels provides a more sophisticated touch compared to the steel wheels of the older model. The changes to the rear focus mainly on the taillights, which now adopt a horizontal through-type design connected by a chrome strip in the middle, offering decent recognition when illuminated. It is worth noting that the new model offers a richer choice of paint options, including metallic blue and pearl white, catering to different users' aesthetic preferences.

Sitting inside, the first impression is a significantly enhanced sense of interior quality. The dashboard is wrapped in soft materials and accented with silver trim, no longer giving off the overly plastic feel of the previous model. The most noticeable feature in the center console is a 10.1-inch floating touchscreen, which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, with an operating smoothness far superior to the older 7-inch screen. The instrument panel still consists of traditional mechanical dials and a monochrome LCD screen, but it now provides more information, including fuel consumption, range, and driving modes. The seats are wrapped in leather material, with the front seats offering manual adjustments. The backrest and cushions are relatively thick, making long periods of sitting more comfortable. The rear seat space is a traditional advantage of the Avanza, with a wheelbase of 2750mm ensuring ample legroom for second-row passengers. Even a passenger with a height of 175cm will have about two fist lengths of space between their knees and the front seats. In terms of storage space, the storage pockets on the doors can hold two bottles of water, the central armrest box's capacity has been increased to accommodate small items, and the trunk offers a standard capacity of 585 liters, which can be expanded to 1609 liters when the second-row seats are folded, fully meeting the storage needs of family trips.

In terms of power, the new car is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivering a maximum output of 97 horsepower and a peak torque of 138Nm, paired with a CVT transmission. Compared to the previous model, the engine tuning places more emphasis on low-end torque, making throttle response relatively brisk at start-up without feeling sluggish. When driving on urban roads, the CVT transmission provides excellent smoothness, with virtually no noticeable shift jerks, and the acceleration process to 60 km/h is very linear. However, when overtaking on highways, it requires a deep press on the accelerator to get enough power, with engine speed climbing above 4000 RPM, which also increases noise. There are three driving modes available: Eco, Standard, and Sport. In Eco mode, throttle response slows down, making it suitable for daily fuel-efficient commuting, while in Sport mode, power output becomes more direct, ideal for situations requiring quick acceleration.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has a moderate steering effort and minimal play, making daily driving relatively easy. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam combination, tuned for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most vibrations, avoiding an obvious jolting sensation. However, when cornering, the body has a noticeable tilt, which is a common issue for MPV models, making them unsuitable for aggressive driving. In fuel consumption tests, we drove 100km on urban roads, and the combined fuel consumption was 6.8L/100km. On highways, the fuel consumption was 5.5L/100km, which is average among vehicles in the same class.

Regarding ride comfort, the noise control of the new car is quite good. When driving below 60km/h, wind and tire noise are not noticeable; however, as the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind noise gradually increases but remains within an acceptable range. Although the seat wrapping isn't very strong, the support is adequate, and long-term sitting does not cause back or waist discomfort. The air conditioning system performs well, capable of quickly cooling down the cabin even in the hot climate of Malaysia. The rear also features independent air vents to accommodate the needs of rear passengers.

Overall, the upgrades in the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version are well-targeted, addressing the shortcomings of the old model by improving interior quality and technological features, while maintaining the advantages of space and reliability. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Perodua Alza, the Avanza offers more space and richer features, although the price might be slightly higher. Compared to the Honda BR-V, it has lower fuel consumption and cheaper maintenance costs. This car is well-suited for families who value practicality and reliability, especially for those who frequently travel with family members. If you are looking for an MPV with ample space, sufficient features, and smooth driving, the 2022 Avanza Upcoming Version is worth considering.

Pros
1.5L engine delivers smooth power, with quick acceleration and confident high-speed overtaking, suitable for Malaysia's complex road conditions
Fuel consumption is friendly, averaging about 6.2-7.8L/100km, making it worry-free to use in high fuel price areas
The exterior design is youthful and stylish, featuring a large grille and LED headlights. The high rate of turning heads resembles a crossover
Cons
The second-row seat support is insufficient, making long-distance rides tiring.
Some interior parts have a noticeable plastic feel, such as the co-pilot and door panels, with average texture.
Safety configuration lacks active braking/automatic emergency braking function.

Owner of 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version
As the owner of the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version, after driving it for a few months in Malaysia, the experience has been truly impressive! Firstly, regarding performance, giving it a 5-star rating is not an exaggeration. Malaysia's road conditions are complex, involving city traffic jams, suburban mountain roads, and highways. Its 1.5L engine delivers power very smoothly, with no sluggish starts, and it gives me confidence when overtaking on highways. Plus, the fuel efficiency is very friendly, averaging about 6.5L/100km. Considering the rising fuel prices in Malaysia, this is such a relief! The exterior design definitely deserves a full score. The design is much younger compared to the old model! The large intake grille, paired with sharp LED headlights and sleek side lines, gives it high curb appeal when parked near an LRT station. My friends all say it doesn’t look like a traditional MPV but more like a stylish crossover. The interior gets a 4-star rating. The overall build quality is solid, and there’s plenty of soft-touch material, with a central control screen that is convenient to operate. However, the support for the second-row seats could be better. Taking my family to Genting Highlands for a weekend, sitting for long trips can be somewhat tiring. For safety, 4 stars. It’s equipped with standard features like VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), HAC (Hill-start Assist Control), and 7 airbags. Last time I encountered ponding on the North-South Highway during a rainy day, and the vehicle remained very stable, giving me a strong sense of safety. It would be perfect if active braking could be added. Overall, this car is very suitable for family use in Malaysia and offers excellent value for money!

As an owner of the 2022 Toyota Avanza who has been driving it in Malaysia for half a year, let me first talk about safety—I give it a score of 4 because I truly feel like it performs quite stably under local road conditions. My family lives in Selangor, and I need to drive on the LDP highway and some bumpy rural roads every day. On the highway, I have encountered motorcycles suddenly changing lanes several times, and its Pre-Collision System (PCS) provides timely alerts. Once, it even automatically braked for me, avoiding a minor collision. The Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system is also very effective on wet and slippery asphalt roads during rainy days, preventing skids easily. However, I deducted some points because there are no side airbags in the rear seats. When driving family members on long trips, there’s always a bit of concern. If that could be added, it would be perfect. As for the exterior, I also give it 4 points. The design aligns well with Malaysian aesthetics—the large trapezoidal grille on the front, paired with chrome decorations, looks energetic under the local blazing sun, unlike some cars that appear "dull." The waistline on the side of the body runs through from the front to the rear, plus the 16-inch multi-spoke wheels; it looks quite eye-catching when parked under the apartment or in a mall's parking lot. However, I personally feel the design of the rear is a bit conservative. If the taillights could be made slimmer to match the front, it would be more harmonious. Overall, both safety and exterior design fall into the "reliable and pleasing" category, making it quite competitive in the B-segment!

Owner of 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version
As the owner of the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version, I've been driving in Malaysia for half a year, and the experience has been genuinely great! First, the performance deserves a full 5 stars—completely no problem with that. My family lives in Selangor, and we often drive in KL city and on the Johor Bahru highways. The 1.5L engine handles Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams with ease, and the acceleration is very smooth. On highways, it performs well at 110km/h for overtaking and doesn’t feel sluggish. Fuel efficiency is particularly good as well—7.8L/100km even during heavy city congestion, and it drops to 6.2L/100km on highways. For someone like us who frequently takes family trips, this is very important! The exterior also deserves full marks! Compared to the previous rounder version, the angular design of the new version fits my taste perfectly. The LED headlights perform exceptionally well during rainy and foggy nights in Penang. The sharp lines of the car body give it a rugged look. Parking it downstairs at the apartment has a higher head-turning rate than my neighbor’s older model. My friends say it looks like a mini Innova—super stylish! I'll give the interior 4 stars. There’s quite a bit of soft-touch material used, and the layout of the center console is very ergonomic. However, the plastic feel on the passenger side is slightly noticeable. But considering the price (though it hasn’t been officially announced, Toyota’s pricing has always been friendly), this level of quality is already very satisfying. The seats are also pretty comfortable—when driving my parents to Genting for a 2-hour ride, they didn’t complain about fatigue at all. For safety, 4 stars. The standard VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) system saved me once—last month I encountered slippery roads in a rainstorm on a rural road in Kuantan, and the system intervened immediately to stabilize the steering. There are also 7 airbags, which gives great peace of mind when traveling with kids. If it had automatic emergency braking, it would be even more perfect. However, considering the features offered at this price bracket, this is already very commendable! Overall, this car is truly practical for Malaysian road conditions, and it delivers excellent value for money!

As the owner of the 2022 Toyota Avanza Upcoming Version, after driving it for more than half a year in Malaysia, I sincerely feel that this car is very suitable for the local road conditions! The exterior design deserves a full score, with its streamlined body that looks particularly eye-catching in KL traffic. Especially the LED headlights, they provide excellent illumination and high recognition when driving on the North-South Expressway at night. Every time I park in front of Lotus Mall, someone asks me if this is the new Avanza, which slightly satisfies my vanity. The performance is likewise impeccable. The 1.5L engine offers smooth acceleration in city traffic jams and effortless overtaking on the highway. A few days ago, I took the whole family to Genting, and even during uphill drives, the power remained ample, and there was no sluggishness even with the air conditioning fully on. The chassis is well-tuned and handles Malaysia’s bumpy rural roads without any issues, with very minimal bumpiness while crossing speed bumps. The interior gets 4 stars though, mainly because there is a bit too much plastic, especially on areas like the dashboard and door panels, which feel a bit average to the touch. However, the seats provide decent support and are comfortable even for long periods, and the storage spaces are very practical, providing locations for phones, wallets, and water bottles. The response speed of the central control screen is decent, and it’s very convenient to connect via Bluetooth to play music. Overall, this car is really suitable for household use in Malaysia, with an extremely high price-performance ratio!
