2022 BMW X3 sDrive20i M Sport Review

In the mid-size luxury SUV market in Malaysia, the BMW X3 has always been a focus for many families and young consumers — after all, it has to uphold the status of a luxury brand while being practical for daily use. The 2022 X3 sDrive20i M Sport variant I test-drove this time attracted me the most due to its balancing act of maintaining BMW's signature handling while adding a lot in terms of features, yet keeping the price range at just over 310,000 MYR, perfectly targeting users who have a solid budget and seek value for money. My primary goal with this test drive was to see whether it truly "grabs both luxury and practicality" in the two most common scenarios: urban commuting and weekend countryside trips.
Looking at the exterior, as the M Sport version, its overall style is sportier compared to the standard variant. The front features a large double-kidney grille with a smoked finish around it, paired with a three-sectioned sporty front bumper below, making it instantly distinguishable from the standard X3. The side profile of the body is very streamlined, extending seamlessly from the front all the way to the rear, with no excessive decorations. The 20-inch multi-spoke wheels are exclusive to the M Sport variant, with tire specifications of 245/45 R20 for both front and rear, providing a strong visual presence. The rear design is relatively simple, featuring LED tail lights with BMW's iconic L-shaped light strips, which are highly recognizable when illuminated. Below the rear bumper, there is a faux diffuser design that further enhances the sporty ambiance. In terms of the lighting system, the car comes standard with LED headlamps and daytime running lights, as well as automatic headlamps and front fog lights, which are very convenient for daily use.
Once you sit inside, the sense of luxury is immediate. The dashboard is wrapped in soft materials with a delicate feel, while the door panels are also covered in leather and paired with metal trim, presenting a quality that meets the expectations of a luxury brand. The center console layout is very clear, featuring a 10.25-inch floating touchscreen alongside physical buttons and knobs, which makes it more intuitive to operate than a fully touch-based system. The instrument cluster is fully digital with rich display content and can switch between different driving mode interfaces, working with paddle shifters on the steering wheel to instantly ramp up the sporty feel. In terms of features, the front seats are electrically adjustable with memory functions, and the passenger seat is also electrically adjustable. The backrest and seat cushions provide excellent support, making long drives comfortable. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split and support remote unlocking, with a trunk capacity of 550 liters that can be expanded after folding down the seats. This space is ample for items like strollers or suitcases. Other details such as a three-zone automatic climate control system, rear air vents, 220V power outlet, keyless entry, and engine start are all standard features, making daily use practically flawless.
Space performance is very important for family users. The dimensions of the X3 are 4708 mm in length, 1891 mm in width, and 1676 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2864 mm, which is considered standard in the mid-size SUV category. The front-row space is excellent; with my height of 178 cm, there remains more than a fist's worth of headroom, and legroom is also ample. The rear row can comfortably accommodate three adults, with about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, and the center floor hump is not too high, making short trips for the middle passenger quite manageable. As for storage space, both front and rear door panels are equipped with storage slots, the center armrest box is deep, and the front row also has two cup holders, making it very convenient to place phones or water bottles for daily use.
In terms of power, this car is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 184PS and a peak torque available between 1350-4000rpm. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The power response is very swift during acceleration, without the lag commonly associated with turbochargers. It is agile when following traffic or overtaking in the city. Switching to sport mode makes the throttle pedal more responsive and downshifts quicker. Although the sense of pushback is not particularly strong, it is more than adequate for daily use. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 8.2 seconds. During the test drive, the performance falls in the upper-middle range for vehicles in this category. In terms of fuel consumption, most of my test drive was on urban roads with occasional highway driving, and the overall fuel consumption is approximately 8.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official 7.1L. However, considering urban traffic congestion, this fuel performance is still acceptable.
Handling has always been BMW's strength, and the X3 is no exception. The steering wheel is very precise with minimal play, and you can clearly feel the wheel angle when cornering, providing great confidence. The chassis uses a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension system, tuned towards sportiness but not overly stiff. On bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out most of the minor vibrations, and when crossing speed bumps, the body movement is minimal. It achieves a great balance between comfort and sportiness. Regarding noise control, wind and road noise are not significant at high speeds, and engine noise only penetrates the cabin under heavy acceleration, meeting the expectations of a luxury brand in terms of quietness.
To sum up, the main highlights of the 2022 BMW X3 sDrive20i M Sport are clear: the sporty appearance brought by the M Sport package, rich practical features, solid handling, and balanced space performance. Compared to its competitors in the same class, such as the Mercedes GLC 200 or the Audi Q5L 40 TFSI, it has a price advantage and better standard configurations. Features like the full LCD instrument panel, three-zone air conditioning, and memory electric seats are all standard, whereas you might have to opt for these in competing models.
Overall, this car is suitable for two types of users: Firstly, those who prioritize family practicality. Its space and configurations can meet the needs of daily commuting and weekend trips. Secondly, young people seeking luxury and driving dynamics. The sporty appearance of the M Sport package and BMW's driving quality provide plenty of enjoyment. If your budget is between 300,000 to 350,000 MYR and you’re looking for a medium-sized SUV that balances luxury, practicality, and handling, the 2022 BMW X3 sDrive20i M Sport is worth considering. It may not be the most extreme sports SUV nor the most comfortable family SUV, but it strikes a great balance between the two, which is its most attractive quality.
