Specs

The luxury mid-size SUV market in Malaysia is currently highly competitive. Consumers desire the quality associated with premium brands while also looking for the fuel efficiency advantages of new energy vehicles. The 2022 BMW X3 xDrive30e M Sport precisely targets this niche demand. As a plug-in hybrid model, it not only retains the driving dynamics of the X3 series but also achieves lower daily operating costs with the help of an electric motor. At the same time, the sporty exterior brought by the M Sport package appeals to the aesthetics of many young people. The core of this test drive is to see whether it can strike a balance between luxury, fuel efficiency, and driving enjoyment, providing potential buyers with a clear purchasing reference.

From a distance, the M Sport package of this X3 is highly recognizable. The front features a larger kidney grille with a blackened finish, making it sportier than the standard version. The air intakes on both sides of the front bumper are also more aggressive, and combined with the sharp design of the LED headlights, it exudes a strong presence. The side profile of the car retains the classic rugged lines of the X3, and the 20-inch dual-tone wheels paired with the wide 245/50 R20 front and 275/40 R20 rear tires further enhance its sporty stance. At the rear, the blackened LED taillights echo the front design, while the diffuser and dual exhaust outlets emphasize its performance characteristics. In terms of lighting, LED headlights and daytime running lights are standard, and the automatic headlight functionality is very practical, eliminating the need for frequent manual switching during daily use.

Inside the car, the interior continues BMW’s signature minimalist luxury style. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by metal trims and piano black panels, offering tactile and visual appeal befitting a luxury car. The 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system is positioned conveniently and operates smoothly, paired with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster for a strong sense of technology. In terms of features, the front seats are electrically adjustable with memory function, the rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 split and can also be remotely released, maximizing practicality. The triple-zone automatic climate control allows front and rear passengers to adjust temperatures independently, and the 220V power outlet offers convenience for rear passengers to charge their devices. Details like keyless entry and automatic rain-sensing wipers make daily use much more seamless.

In terms of space, the dimensions of the vehicle are 4708mm×1891mm×1676mm, with a wheelbase of 2864mm, providing ample space in both the front and rear rows. A passenger 175cm tall sitting in the rear row has more than two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, making the space feel airy. The trunk has a standard capacity of 550L, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats to provide additional room, easily accommodating strollers or suitcases. Rear passengers are also taken care of with air-conditioning vents and power outlets for added comfort.

In terms of performance, this vehicle features a combination of a 2.0T turbocharged engine and an electric motor. The engine delivers a maximum of 184PS, while the motor provides a maximum of 109PS, making the combined output sufficient for everyday driving. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.1 seconds. During actual driving, the motor engages quickly during startup, delivering responsive power. When overtaking, stepping hard on the accelerator activates both the engine and the motor, producing a noticeable push-back sensation. Switching to Sport mode increases the throttle response and adjusts the transmission to a more aggressive shift logic, satisfying occasional desires for driving excitement. In Eco mode, the vehicle prioritizes the use of the electric motor, with an officially claimed pure electric range of 50km. For short commutes, it can operate almost entirely on electric power, keeping fuel consumption very low. The official combined fuel consumption is 2.6L/100km, and based on actual tests, city driving in heavy traffic results in approximately 4L/100km, while highway driving reduces it to below 3L/100km, showcasing impressive fuel efficiency.

In terms of handling and chassis, the front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension tuning leans towards sporty handling, but it is not overly stiff. When passing over speed bumps, the suspension effectively filters out bumps, avoiding a pronounced bouncing sensation. When cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, giving the driver plenty of confidence. The 20-inch wide tires provide excellent grip, and combined with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the car remains stable on slippery roads. As for braking, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes perform linearly, with a moderate braking distance, ensuring a safe and secure driving experience for daily use.

In terms of driving comfort, the sound insulation is well-done, with wind and tire noise at highway speeds kept within reasonable limits, which does not affect in-car conversations. The seats offer excellent support, ensuring you don’t feel fatigued even during long drives. The energy recovery system provides adjustable levels, and when set to the lowest level, the coasting experience is similar to that of a fuel car, with no noticeable dragging sensation, making it easy to adapt to.

Overall, the 2022 BMW X3 xDrive30e M Sport boasts clear core advantages: the sporty looks brought by the M Sport package, the low fuel consumption of the plug-in hybrid system, a wealth of luxury features, and the consistently excellent handling quality BMW is known for. Compared to its counterparts like the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 e and Audi Q5L Sportback e-tron, it offers a more competitive price and richer features, making it highly cost-effective. This vehicle is very suitable for families who value brand quality, require low daily operating costs, but do not want to sacrifice driving pleasure, or for young consumers seeking luxury and comfort. In summary, it is a mid-size SUV that combines luxury, practicality, and economy, making it worth considering for potential buyers.

Last week, I took my wife and kids to the mountains for a trip. Just after passing the rough road at the foot of Cloud Peak Mountain, there was a sudden heavy rain, and the front windshield instantly became blurry. Fortunately, the rain-sensing wipers activated immediately, and the LED automatic headlights turned on in time. The steering wheel felt solid to grip, and the xDrive was incredibly stable without any skidding. Safety 4 stars? Mainly because the active braking didn't intervene in time when I was following too closely last time, which gave me a shock. However, the six airbags and front and rear radars are reliable. Interior gets 5 stars for sure, the fully digital dashboard is clear, the three-zone air conditioning kept the kids in the back seat from complaining about the heat, and the memory seats adjusted back to my preferred position as soon as I got in. Exterior gets 4 stars; the M package looks sporty enough, but the 20-inch wheels felt a bit bumpy on the village's rough roads. I’ll try switching to thicker tires later. The pure electric range of 50 kilometers is just right for city commuting, and the hybrid fuel consumption is 2.6L, so no worries about rising gas prices in Malaysia; though charging does take a bit of time. Overall, it’s great for family use with a touch of excitement. Worth the price.

Last Saturday, I took my family to explore the foot of Cloud Top Mountain. The mountain road was very slippery after the rain. The 20-inch tires had sufficient grip, but there was some slight lag in the hybrid connection during sudden acceleration. However, the xDrive was exceptionally stable, and there was no drifting when cornering. The M Sport package turned a lot of heads, but the rims easily trapped mud. The interior was truly comfortable; the triple screens were clear, the memory seats adjusted to the correct position as soon as I got in, the rear air conditioning was cool enough, and the 550L trunk fit two suitcases and still had room for the baby stroller. Worth every penny.

Sure! Here's the translated content: Previously drove a Japanese SUV, switched to this X3 plug-in hybrid mainly for its hybrid fuel efficiency and BMW handling. During morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the pure electric mode is quiet and fuel-efficient, with a fuel consumption of 2.6L in the city, which is really impressive. On weekends, driving on the mountain roads of Genting, the explosive power of the 2.0T + electric motor is more than sufficient, and the xDrive offers excellent stability, giving enough confidence in cornering. The safety features are top-notch, and the automatic emergency braking helped me avoid a lane-cutting incident once. A solid 5-star rating. The downside is that the pure electric range is only 50km, so if I occasionally forget to charge, I end up using fuel. However, overall it’s very suitable for use in Malaysia, and I don’t worry about longer highway trips. The M Sport package looks great and turns a lot of heads.

This hybrid power is really strong! On rainy days, climbing uphill requires just a tap on the gas pedal to zoom forward, overtaking feels amazing.

The previously owned Japanese SUV was reliable but lacked some driving dynamics. I switched to the X3 Plug-in Hybrid M Sport for its balance — in Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, it can crawl purely on electricity with 2.6L fuel consumption, which is half of the old car's, and I don’t feel bad about fuel costs during traffic jams. The exterior M kit looks sharp, with 20-inch wheels paired with side skirts, making it sportier than the standard version; the interior features a fully digital instrument cluster and 12 speakers, with a great sense of quality, though the piano black trim easily picks up fingerprints, requiring frequent cleaning. On weekends, I take the family to Genting Highlands, and in hybrid mode, the power delivery during uphill climbs is smooth, with xDrive offering superb stability. The 40:20:40 foldable rear seats can fit a stroller and camping gear. The only minor gripe: the 50km pure electric range is sufficient for urban areas but requires planning for suburban trips. However, with more charging stations at Malaysian highway service areas, it’s not a significant issue. Overall, it’s a great car that balances family use with driving pleasure!
