In Malaysia's luxury mid-size car market, the D-Segment has always been the arena for brands to showcase their technology and comfortable experiences. The 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 300 AMG Line, as a key competitor in this segment, attracts consumers who seek luxury and fuel economy with its MHEV hybrid system, AMG sports package, and upgraded intelligent features. This test drive will focus on its static design, space practicality, and dynamic driving performance to see if this "mini S-Class" can hold its ground in the competition within its class.

In terms of exterior design, the C 300 AMG Line continues the latest family design language, with an overall style leaning towards sportiness and sophistication. The front features a large shield-shaped grille with vertical chrome slats inside, complemented by an AMG-exclusive black sport package around the grille edges and the lower front lip, enhancing its aggressiveness. The side profile of the vehicle features smooth lines with a waistline running from the front to the rear, while the combination of 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels and 225/40 R19 tires further reinforces its sporty stance. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt the family's signature "three-pointed star" illumination design, offering high recognizability. The dual exhaust outlets on both sides and the small spoiler also echo the sporty positioning of the AMG Line. The lighting system is equipped with standard LED lights across the range, with automatic headlights and daytime running lights adding to everyday convenience.

Entering the interior, the highlights are the luxurious feel and sense of technology. The center console features an 11.4-inch floating touchscreen, offering smooth operation and support for CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, paired with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster to create an intelligent dual-screen interactive experience. The materials used in the interior primarily consist of soft leather and metal trims. The steering wheel is wrapped in Nappa leather, providing a comfortable grip. The front seats support electric adjustment, memory function, and lumbar support to ensure comfort even during long drives. In terms of features, keyless entry/start, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air-conditioning vents, panoramic sunroof, and rain-sensing wipers are all standard, maximizing convenience in daily use.

In terms of space, the C 300 AMG Line has a body size of 4751mm×1820mm×1437mm, with a wheelbase of 2865mm, which is considered mainstream in this class. The front row offers ample seating space, and for a passenger of 175cm height, there is still a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom offers about two fist lengths, and headroom about one fist, making it adequate for family travel needs. As for storage, the front central armrest box and door storage compartments are moderately sized, capable of holding phones, water bottles, and other personal items. The trunk has a capacity of 455 liters and supports a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration, which expands the space for large luggage. Additionally, ISO FIX child seat anchors are equipped in the rear seats, adding practicality.

In terms of power, the C 300 AMG Line is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine combined with a 48V mild hybrid system. The engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 190PS, with the motor providing an additional 20PS and 200N·m of torque, mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Official data states a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h. During actual driving, the motor's intervention during the starting phase allows for quicker power response, eliminating the delay commonly experienced in traditional fuel-powered cars. During mid-to-high range acceleration, the engine and motor collaborate to deliver consistent power reserves when stepping on the accelerator for overtaking. The driving modes include Comfort, Sport, and Eco. In Comfort mode, the transmission shifts smoothly, making it suitable for daily commuting. In Sport mode, the shifting logic becomes more aggressive, and the steering wheel feels heavier, providing a certain level of driving pleasure.

The handling and chassis performance are commendable. With a combination of front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, the tuning strikes a balance between comfort and sportiness. During daily driving, the suspension effectively filters out minor bumps on the road. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the body remains stable with no excessive bouncing. In corners, the body roll is well-controlled, and the rear-wheel-drive setup makes the rear end more agile. Overall handling ranks above average among luxury cars in its class. As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7L/100km, with actual urban road consumption at about 8.5L/100km and highway consumption around 6.5L/100km. The mild hybrid system significantly enhances fuel economy.

The details of driving comfort are commendable. The interior noise control is excellent, with wind and tire noise kept at low levels at a speed of 100km/h. The seats provide good support and wrapping, making long-duration trips less fatiguing. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with 7 airbags, a 360-degree panoramic camera, automatic parking, lane departure warning, active braking, and other safety features, providing ample protection for daily travel.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C 300 AMG Line lie in: the balance of power and fuel efficiency brought by the hybrid system, the luxurious and technologically advanced interior, extensive safety and comfort features, and the sporty exterior enhanced by the AMG Line package. Compared to competitors like the BMW 3 Series Li and Audi A4L in the same class, it offers a stronger sense of luxury and advanced technology in its interior, making it suitable for consumers who value quality and comfort.

This car is more suitable for two types of users: firstly, family users who seek luxury and everyday practicality, as its spacious interior and comprehensive features can meet family travel needs; secondly, young consumers who favor sporty styles and smart technology, as the AMG Line sporty exterior and dual-screen interactive system align well with their aesthetic and usage preferences.

In summary, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz C 300 AMG Line is a well-balanced luxury mid-sized sedan that performs well in terms of power, comfort, technology, and safety. It is a competitive choice in the D-Segment market.

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we started on the mountain road, we encountered a heavy downpour. The 19-inch tires provided stable grip, and the vehicle stability control intervened promptly during cornering, with no skidding. The ambient interior lighting felt cozy in the rainy weather, but the front passenger storage compartment is a bit shallow. The hybrid system saved fuel in congested sections, but the motor assist felt slightly weak during rapid acceleration. The 360-degree camera made it easy for me to pass other vehicles on the muddy path. Overall, I am satisfied, but there is room for improvement in the details.

Last Wednesday after work, I encountered heavy rain. The traffic flow on the overpass was like solidified ink. The C300's rain-sensing wipers suddenly sped up, and I stared at the 11.4-inch central control screen's 360-degree image display — even the reflection from the roadside drainage grates was clear, so I dared to carefully follow the car ahead. Suddenly, the car in front braked sharply, and the autonomous braking system kicked in with a "thump," scaring me into a cold sweat but stopping steadily. After returning home, I touched the stitching on the leather seats. Although the storage compartment on the passenger side is a bit shallow, the sense of security within this 2865mm wheelbase is worth the price.

The throttle response of this generation C300 AMG Line is ridiculously fast! Urban overtaking feels like a breeze, and the push-back sensation pins you directly to the seat—absolutely exhilarating!

Previously, I drove a Japanese family car. Switching to the C300 AMG Line was purely for Mercedes’ refined feel and the sporty vibe of the AMG package – it has top-notch recognition on the streets and turns heads even when parked at the KLCC garage. During the morning rush hour jam on Jalan Bukit Bintang, the 2.0T + mild hybrid starts smoothly and is very responsive; on weekends when driving on the North-South Expressway, the chassis feels incredibly stable, and the cornering support is far superior to my old car. However, the 19-inch tires do produce some noticeable noise on asphalt road seams. The safety features are impressively comprehensive; just the other day on the Penang Expressway, the active braking intervened when the car in front suddenly braked hard – gave me a scare but it genuinely saved lives. The only minor gripe: the 50L fuel tank means frequent refueling on highways, but for city commuting, the hybrid system is fuel-efficient, which makes it acceptable overall.
