In recent years, the D-segment sedan market in Malaysia has been gradually shifting towards a direction that balances "performance and fuel efficiency." Consumers wish to retain the driving feel of fuel-powered cars while lowering daily usage costs, without compromising on luxury features. The 2020 Volvo S60 T8 PHEV R-Design is precisely aimed to meet these needs—not only does it feature Volvo's signature plug-in hybrid system, but it also enhances visual impact with the R-Design sports package, and improves value through a price reduction (compared to the 2019 T8 R-Design's RM 295,888, the 2020 model is priced at RM 282,540). The primary objective of this test drive is to verify whether this hybrid system delivers balanced performance and whether the sporty tuning affects daily comfort.

In terms of appearance, the design style of the 2020 S60 T8 PHEV R-Design retains Volvo's Nordic simplicity while adding aggression through the sports package. The front features the iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights, complemented by a vertically slatted grille with a blacked-out finish. The R-Design-specific front bumper incorporates larger air intakes on both sides, giving it a lower and more dynamic stance. The side profile boasts smooth lines, with a length of 4761mm and a wheelbase of 2872mm, which are standard dimensions for a D-segment sedan. The 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 235/40 R19 tires further accentuate the sporty posture. At the rear, the blacked-out "Viking Axe" LED taillights echo the front design, while the dual exhaust outlets (specific to R-Design) and a small rear spoiler add depth to the rear profile. The overall design has a high level of recognition, particularly with the lighting system's illumination effect, making it easily identifiable during nighttime driving.

Opening the door introduces a strong Nordic interior design style, with a simple layout and solid materials. The dashboard features soft-touch materials and metallic accents, complemented by R-Design specific sports seats (with blue stitching), providing both tactile and visual quality fitting for a luxury D-segment vehicle. The center control area is equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen display with a clear interface, supporting Bluetooth, CarPlay, and Android Auto, and offers a decent level of operational smoothness. The full 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster provides comprehensive information and allows switching between different modes (Eco, Sport, Pure Electric, etc.). The HUD (Head-Up Display) projects information such as speed and navigation onto the windshield, enhancing driving convenience. In terms of features, the car comes standard with a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, electrically adjustable front seats (with memory function for the driver), a wireless charging pad, and a 220V power outlet, ensuring convenience and comfort in daily use. Notably, Volvo's trademark safety features are all included: 6 airbags, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, a 360-degree camera, and automatic parking are all standard, leaving nothing to worry about in terms of safety.

When it comes to space, the 2872mm wheelbase provides ample legroom for both front and rear passengers. The front seats offer good support, and a 175cm tall passenger can achieve a comfortable sitting posture with approximately a fist's worth of headroom. Rear passengers enjoy about two fists of legroom and a fist's worth of headroom, while the center floor hump is slight and does not significantly affect the short-term comfort of a middle passenger. In terms of storage capacity, the trunk provides 442L of space, which is slightly reduced compared to the gasoline version due to battery placement, but it can still accommodate two 28-inch suitcases without issue. The cabin offers abundant storage compartments, including a spacious center armrest box and practical door pockets. The front row also includes a wireless charging pad and USB ports, while the rear passengers benefit from independent air conditioning vents and power outlets, catering well to the needs of family users.

Dynamic driving section: The powertrain of the 2020 Volvo S60 T8 PHEV R-Design is a core highlight. It is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine + electric motor plug-in hybrid system, with a combined maximum power output of 407PS (engine 320PS + electric motor 87PS) and a combined maximum torque of 640N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 4.4 seconds. In actual driving, the power response is swift in pure electric mode during the start phase, with no noticeable lag; after switching to sport mode, the engine and motor work simultaneously, delivering strong acceleration burst power. Stepping on the accelerator deeply during overtaking provides a distinct push-back sensation, and the transmission shifts smoothly with almost no jolts. Driving modes (Eco, Pure Electric, Sport, Hybrid) are switched using a knob next to the gear lever, following a clear logic.

Regarding handling and chassis performance, the car uses a front double-wishbone independent suspension + rear multi-link independent suspension (the configuration sheet does not specify the rear suspension, but most Volvo models on the same platform adopt this layout). The chassis is tuned towards sportiness while maintaining a certain degree of comfort. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and in sport mode, the steering damping increases, enhancing handling confidence. The suspension effectively filters road surface bumps; when crossing speed bumps or rough roads, there are no obvious residual vibrations in the body. Additionally, it provides adequate support during cornering and controls body roll well. The all-wheel-drive system improves the vehicle's stability on slippery roads or curves. During daily driving, its presence is almost unnoticeable, but on complex terrains (e.g., mountainous roads in the rain), the enhanced grip becomes evidently noticeable.

In terms of performance testing, the officially stated pure electric range is 49 km. Under congested urban conditions (with air conditioning on), the achievable range is about 85% of the official figure, which meets the daily short-distance commute (e.g., to and from work) requirement for pure electric usage. As for fuel efficiency, when fully refueled (60L) and fully charged, the average fuel consumption in urban road conditions is about 2.5L/100km (officially 2L), and about 5L/100km on highways. Overall, fuel efficiency outperforms the same-class gasoline vehicles. Regarding braking performance, the car is equipped with ventilated discs both in the front and rear, providing stable braking performance. The braking distance from 100-0km/h is about 38 meters, meeting luxury car standards.

In terms of driving comfort, the car offers excellent noise control. In pure electric mode, there is almost no noise, and at high speeds (120km/h), wind noise and tire noise remain within an acceptable range. The Harman Kardon sound system also helps further isolate external noise. The seats are commendable for their comfort; the front sport seats balance both support and cushioning, ensuring long drives are not tiring. The rear seats have soft padding, and the backrest angle is suitable. Even the middle seat has a headrest, which enhances long-distance ride comfort. The energy recovery system is adjustable in three levels, with the highest level creating a noticeable drag when the accelerator is released, which helps improve range. The lowest setting provides a gliding sensation similar to gasoline cars and does not affect the driving experience once you adapt.

In summary, the 2020 Volvo S60 T8 PHEV R-Design has clear core advantages. Firstly, the powertrain is well-balanced, offering both the energy efficiency of pure electric mode and the powerful performance of hybrid mode. Secondly, it is richly equipped, particularly in safety and comfort configurations, ranking it among the higher tiers of its class. Thirdly, its price has been reduced, increasing its cost-effectiveness; compared to the 2019 T8 R-Design model, it is approximately RM 13,000 cheaper while maintaining nearly identical configurations. Compared with competitors in the same class (such as the BMW 330e and Mercedes-Benz C300e), this car has more comprehensive safety configurations and a more competitive price. However, it falls slightly short of BMW in brand appeal and driving pleasure and is slightly less luxurious than Mercedes-Benz.

Overall, this car is suitable for family users who value balanced performance—they need energy efficiency for daily commuting, occasional power bursts, and also have high demands for safety and comfort. It is also suitable for young people who pursue a combination of luxury and sportiness. The sporty appearance and strong power of the R-Design can meet their driving needs. If you are looking for an "all-round" luxury D-segment car that does not compromise on performance while hoping to reduce usage costs, then the 2020 Volvo S60 T8 PHEV R-Design is worth considering.

Pros
Powerful performance, 4.4 seconds to break 100km/h, fast acceleration, fuel-efficient in hybrid mode (2-3.2L/100km)
Rich safety features, practical City Safety system, stable Pilot Assist
Nordic minimalist and premium interior, comfortable Nappa leather seats, crystal gear lever with great texture
Cons
The car's weight causes noticeable body roll during cornering, and it feels heavy when crossing speed bumps at low speeds.
The central control screen occasionally stutters after being exposed to sunlight and reacts slightly delayed in certain scenarios.
The 19-inch wheels easily trap small stones, feel bumpy, and require slowing down on rough roads.

Owner of 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design
As the owner of a 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design, driving in Malaysia for almost two years, the overall experience has been quite satisfying! Let's talk about performance first: the 4.4-second 0-100 km/h acceleration is especially enjoyable for overtaking during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour. In hybrid mode, it's quiet when following at low speed, and the fuel consumption of 3.18L/100km really saves money considering the local fuel prices. However, the car weighs over 2 tons, and the body roll during cornering is slightly more noticeable than expected. A rating of 4 stars is just right. The interior features Volvo's classic design style — the Nordic minimalist aesthetic really suits my taste. The R-Design's sporty seats provide great support, and the leather feels premium. However, the central control screen occasionally reacts a bit slowly, especially after being exposed to intense sunlight, causing slight lag. This minor flaw doesn't affect the overall experience, so a 4-star rating is fair. Safety features are Volvo's forte and need no elaboration. The City Safety system often helps me brake on narrow Penang roads, and the pilot assist on the highway is also stable. That said, there was one instance in rainy weather where it took longer to recognize lane markings, so you still need to stay alert yourself. A 4-star rating is appropriate. As for the exterior, the R-Design's sporty kit combined with the Thor's Hammer headlights attracts quite a lot of attention when parked near the Twin Towers. The tail lights also have a strong identity when lit. However, the 19-inch wheels tend to trap small stones from the roadside, so I’ve had to repair tires more often compared to my friends' cars. A 4-star rating is suitable. Overall, this car performs well under road conditions in Malaysia with no major issues. I’d recommend it to friends who value safety and quality!

Owner of 2020 Volvo S60 T8 PHEV R-Design
As the owner of a 2020 Volvo S60 T8 PHEV R-Design, having driven it for almost two years, I truly feel that it was worth every penny! Let’s talk about its performance. In Malaysia, where traffic jams are common and occasional highway driving is required, its performance is simply amazing. The pure electric mode is perfectly sufficient for commuting in the city. During Kuala Lumpur's rush hour traffic jams, it’s quiet and fuel-efficient, with a combined fuel consumption of only 2L/100km, much more economical than my previous petrol car. If you’re in the mood for some excitement, the hybrid mode’s 0-100km/h acceleration in 4.4 seconds makes overtaking a breeze on the North-South Expressway. The power is always ready, and it doesn’t feel like an ordinary family sedan at all. Moving on to safety, Volvo’s safety features are truly as good as they claim to be. There was one time in Penang, on a narrow street, when a motorcycle suddenly darted out, and the automatic emergency braking system kicked in immediately, helping me avoid an accident. I was really scared at that moment. During daily driving, the lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist are very practical. Especially in places like Malacca, where roads are winding and narrow, they constantly remind me to drive safely. There's also the 360-degree camera system, which is super handy when looking for parking spots in Kuala Lumpur. I no longer have to worry about scrapes and scratches. Finally, the appearance. The R-Design’s sporty package is very attractive. The streamlined body looks especially refined under sunlight, and every time I park at a mall, it always catches people’s attention. The design of the LED headlights is also sharp, and the illumination at night is excellent. Even on those rural roads in East Malaysia without streetlights, you can see clearly. In summary, I am extremely satisfied with this car’s performance, safety, and appearance, and I highly recommend it to friends seeking a balance between a family car and high performance!

Owner of 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design
As the owner of a 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design who has been driving it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! Let’s start with the interior, a solid 5 out of 5—absolutely well deserved. The Nordic minimalistic premium vibe is evident, and all the touchpoints are covered in soft leather. Especially the Orrefors crystal gear knob, every time I shift gears, it feels incredibly refined. The central touchscreen responds quickly, and the CarPlay connection is stable, making it super convenient to use during Kuala Lumpur traffic jams. The performance is impeccable—accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds makes overtaking on Malaysian highways a pure delight. In hybrid mode, the fuel consumption in urban areas is just over 3L, far more fuel-efficient than petrol cars in the same class. Last week, I went to Genting Highlands, and the power was instantly available during climbs, with no sluggishness at all. The exterior gets a 4 out of 5 because the front design is a bit understated—if it were sportier, it would be perfect. However, the overall lines are still very elegant, and the car gets quite a few second glances on the road. In summary, this car performs outstandingly well under Malaysian road conditions!

Owner of 2020 Volvo S60 T8 PHEV R-Design
As the owner of the 2020 Volvo S60 T8 PHEV R-Design, driving in Malaysia for almost three years, what satisfies me the most is its design and safety performance! First, let's talk about the design. The R-Design package really hits the spot for me – the blacked-out front grille, 19-inch sport wheels, and the small spoiler at the rear make it stand out on the streets of Kuala Lumpur with a super high turn-around rate! Especially during evening commutes, when the LED headlights light up, the recognition is top-notch, even the parking lot security has praised, "Your car looks so refined." The body lines are smooth yet low-profile, making it perfect for business commuting or weekend family trips to Genting Highlands. Now for safety, Volvo truly lives up to its reputation! You know how the traffic is in Malaysia; sudden motorcycles darting out in Kuala Lumpur, and unruly lane changes on the highways. One time on Jalan Bukit Bintang, a motorcycle suddenly dashed out from an alley, and before I could react, the automatic braking system beeped twice and braked on its own. It gave me a scare, but no harm was done! While driving on highways, the lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control are incredibly useful, significantly reducing the fatigue of long-distance driving. And the 360-degree parking camera makes parking in narrow alleys in Penang much easier without worrying about scraping against roadside poles. In conclusion, these two aspects alone make it worth every penny. Choosing Volvo was definitely the right choice!

Owner of 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design
As the owner of the 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design, having driven it in Malaysia for almost four years, there are a few points I feel strongly about: Let's talk about safety first. I would rate it 4 stars, which means "fairly satisfied but not perfect" — Volvo's City Safety system has helped me avoid two minor collisions in Kuala Lumpur traffic, as it can automatically stop when the car in front brakes suddenly. When driving on the North-South Expressway, the lane-keeping system is also very stable, not like some cars that tend to "snatch the steering wheel." However, there was an instance when I was navigating a narrow alley in Penang, and the resolution of the 360-degree camera was a bit blurry, leading to a near-miss with a parked motorcycle. It would be perfect if this feature could be upgraded. I’d rate the exterior at 4 stars because the R-Design package really suits my taste — the black grille paired with Thor’s Hammer headlights looks especially striking under Sabah’s sunlight. When parked at a seaside parking lot in Kota Kinabalu, passersby even asked me about the model. The only slight regret is that the 19-inch rims feel a bit bumpy on Malaysia's rough roads (like the pothole-ridden outskirts of Kuala Lumpur); you have to slow down over speed bumps, or it feels like the tires are "protesting." The interior definitely deserves a 5-star rating! This is truly Volvo's "killer feature" — the minimalist Scandinavian design is visually comforting, and the Nappa leather seats don’t get noticeably hot even in Malaysia’s high temperatures (maybe thanks to the seat ventilation?). The crystal gear knob in the center console feels premium every time I touch it; my friends always compliment its "luxury" when they sit in my car. Most importantly, the new car had almost no strange odors, which is crucial in the hot and humid weather of Southeast Asia. This is in stark contrast to my previous Japanese car, which used to emit an unbearable smell after being exposed under the sun. Overall, this car’s usability in Malaysia really aligns with my needs — safe and reliable, stylish in appearance, and with an interior that offers a "class-above" experience. If the minor details could be refined, it would absolutely be a full-score, perfect car!
