2022 Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 AMG Line Review

In recent years, the selection of C-segment electric vehicles in Malaysia has gradually become more diverse. Family users and young consumers are beginning to focus more on all-electric SUVs with a balanced configuration under RM300,000. The Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 AMG Line, as the brand's entry-level electric SUV, has attracted considerable attention since its launch due to Mercedes-Benz's brand appeal, the addition of the AMG sports package, and its rich intelligent configurations. In this test drive, we focus on experiencing its daily practicality, performance, and range to see if this car truly meets Malaysian consumers' expectations for a luxury electric vehicle.
The exterior of the EQA 250 AMG Line continues the design language of Mercedes-Benz's EQ series, with an overall sporty style. The front features a closed star grille adorned with a large three-pointed star badge in the center, which is highly recognizable. The sharply designed LED headlights on both sides are connected by a chrome strip running along the top of the grille, creating a visually wider appearance. The side body lines are smooth, with pronounced muscular arches over the front and rear wheels, complemented by 19-inch multi-spoke AMG alloy wheels, enhancing its sporty appeal. At the rear, the continuous LED taillight is a signature design of the EQ series, providing a striking effect when illuminated. The lower part of the rear bumper features black diffuser trim and two chrome-finished exhaust outlets (decoration only), further emphasizing the AMG Line's sporty positioning.
Inside the vehicle, the interior layout is similar to Mercedes-Benz's fuel models, with the familiar dual 10.25-inch screen design taking center stage in the dashboard. The left screen serves as a fully digital instrument cluster, while the right is a touchscreen infotainment display with a user-friendly and clear interface. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials and accented with silver trim, meeting the quality expectations of a luxury brand. The multifunction steering wheel supports heating and memory functions, providing a comfortable grip. The standard HUD (Head-Up Display) system displays information such as speed and navigation, which enhances driving convenience. The front seats are electrically adjustable with memory settings and come with heating functionality, which is practical for occasional rainy days or air-conditioned environments in Malaysia. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split, expanding the trunk capacity from 340L to a larger space, accommodating items such as strollers or suitcases for everyday use. Additionally, the rear features independent air conditioning vents and USB ports to fulfill the needs of rear passengers.
In terms of performance, the EQA 250 AMG Line is equipped with a front-mounted single electric motor delivering a maximum of 190PS horsepower and a peak torque of 370N·m, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8.9 seconds. During daily driving, the car responds quickly from a stop, and a light press on the accelerator provides decent power output, making it easy to follow traffic or overtake in urban commutes. When switched to Sport mode, the power delivery becomes more direct, offering a significantly enhanced push-back sensation, though its overall tuning still leans towards comfort. The chassis employs a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension (though not explicitly stated in the specs, driving experience aligns with this segment's standards). The suspension is tuned to be firm yet supple; it effectively absorbs bumps when going over speed bumps or uneven roads without feeling overly stiff. When cornering at high speeds, the car's body roll is well-controlled, providing strong stability.
Range and power consumption are the most concerning points for EV users. The official range of the EQA 250 is 429 km. We drove it on both congested urban roads and highways, with each accounting for about half the trip. With air conditioning and music turned on throughout, the actual range achieved was about 80% of the official figure, and the power consumption remained around 17-18kWh/100km. Its performance is decent. In terms of charging, using a DC fast charging station to charge from 10% to 80% takes about 40 minutes, whereas slow charging takes about 8 hours, satisfying daily household or long-distance charging needs.
In terms of driving comfort, the EQA 250 offers good sound insulation — at speeds below 60 km/h, motor noise is almost inaudible, while at high speeds, there is slight wind and tire noise, but it does not interfere with conversations inside the car. Regenerative braking is adjustable with three levels. At the highest level, releasing the accelerator produces a noticeable drag effect, suitable for one-pedal driving in urban traffic; the lowest level provides a coasting sensation similar to that of a fuel-powered car, ideal for highway cruising. The seats offer moderate support, ensuring no fatigue even during prolonged drives. For rear passengers around 175 cm in height, there’s about two fist spaces of knee room and one fist space of headroom, so it doesn’t feel cramped.
In summary, the core advantages of the Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 AMG Line lie in the brand premium of Mercedes-Benz, abundant safety features (such as 7 airbags, active braking, and lane-keeping assistance as standard), and a comfortable driving and riding experience. Compared to the BMW iX1 or Audi Q4 e-tron in the same class, the EQA 250 is more competitively priced and offers more comprehensive features, making it stand out in terms of value for money. This car is suitable for families prioritizing brand prestige and comfort features, or young consumers seeking a vehicle for daily commuting and occasional long-distance travel. If your budget is within 300,000 MYR and you are looking for a luxury brand electric SUV, the EQA 250 AMG Line is worth considering.
