2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight Review

In Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market, the needs of family users for space, safety, and practicality have always been the core focus, and the 2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight is aimed precisely at this group. As a cornerstone model under Subaru, it not only continues the traditional advantage of full-time all-wheel drive but also upgrades its configuration and safety systems. In this test drive, we focus on whether it can meet the core needs of daily family use while evaluating whether its dynamic performance meets expectations.
From the exterior design, the 2023 Forester maintains a steady style, with overall lines that are smooth yet robust. At the front, the hexagonal grille is paired with Subaru's signature chrome accents, while the LED headlights connect to the grille, enhancing visual width. The lower front bumper is equipped with black plastic cladding, which, combined with a minimum ground clearance of 220mm, retains the SUV's off-road capability while appearing understated and practical. Along the sides, a dual waistline design extends from the front to the rear, complemented by 17-inch multi-spoke wheels, achieving balanced proportions. Chrome trim around the window frames and black fender flares enhance the details' texture. At the rear, the LED taillights are arranged horizontally, echoing the design at the front. The rear bumper also features black cladding and rear fog lights, giving it a high level of recognition and offering a simple yet family-oriented aesthetic.
Inside the cabin, dark tones dominate the interior, with extensive use of soft-touch materials, complemented by silver accents for added texture, matching its price segment. The central console layout is simple, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen in the center that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with smooth operation. Physical buttons underneath make it easy for drivers to operate by feel. The multi-functional steering wheel is equipped with paddle shifters. On the left, controls for the EyeSight driver assistance system are integrated, while audio and telephone controls are on the right. For seating, the front driver and passenger seats are equipped with 8-way power adjustments, with thick cushioning and good support. The rear seats adopt a 60:40 split-fold design, and with the 2670mm wheelbase, legroom is spacious: a 175cm tall passenger can still have two fist-widths of space for their knees, and there is ample headroom. As for storage space, the door panel storage slots can hold two bottles of water, the center armrest box has a roomy capacity, and the trunk offers a standard capacity of 520L that can be expanded to approximately 1500L by folding down the rear seats, accommodating large items. In terms of features, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, power-folding mirrors, and rain-sensing wipers are all standard, ensuring practicality.
For power, it is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum of 156PS and a peak torque of 196N·m, paired with a CVT transmission and a full-time all-wheel-drive system. During daily driving, it starts smoothly, and when the RPM rises to 4000, the torque reaches its peak, with acceleration performing moderately, making it suitable for steady driving. Switching to sport mode results in a more responsive throttle, though it lacks a strong push-back feel. Regarding fuel efficiency, the official combined fuel consumption is stated as 7.6L/100km. In real-world test drives, it achieved around 8.5L/100km in urban areas and approximately 6.8L/100km on highways, meeting expectations. In terms of handling, the steering is precise, with minimal play. The chassis features front MacPherson struts and a rear double-wishbone independent suspension, tuned for comfort, effectively absorbing road bumps. It passes over speed bumps without a harsh feel. When cornering, the full-time all-wheel-drive system provides strong grip, and body roll is kept within a reasonable range, exhibiting excellent stability. The EyeSight driver assistance system is a highlight, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keeping assistance. In practice, the adaptive cruise control follows vehicles smoothly, and lane-keeping assist effectively corrects minor deviations, enhancing long-distance driving safety.
In terms of ride comfort, the sound insulation performance is excellent, with wind noise and tire noise at acceptable levels during high-speed driving. The seats offer good wrapping and are not prone to causing fatigue during long drives. The braking system responds promptly, with a short braking distance that inspires confidence. It’s worth noting that the CVT transmission exhibits a slight delay in RPM rise during rapid acceleration, though this does not significantly affect daily use.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight lie in its full-time all-wheel-drive system, comprehensive safety features, and practical space performance. Compared to peers like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, it offers better off-road capability and safety configurations. While its power performance is not particularly outstanding, it is fully adequate for everyday family use. It is suitable for families that prioritize safety, need to occasionally handle unpaved roads, and pursue a stable and comfortable driving experience, especially those who often travel with family members or live in areas with complex road conditions.
In summary, the 2023 Subaru Forester 2.0 i-L EyeSight is a well-balanced family SUV with no significant drawbacks. Its safety and practicality attributes are maximized, making it a worthy choice for family users.
