2024 BMW X3 xDrive30e Final Edition Review

In recent years, Malaysia's mid-size luxury SUV market has become increasingly competitive. Consumers want both the refinement of German brands and the economic benefits of hybrid models. At this juncture, BMW has launched the 2024 X3 xDrive30e Final Edition, which precisely meets these demands. As the special final edition of the X3 PHEV series, it not only retains the handling genes of the fuel-powered version but also incorporates the practicality of pure electric commuting, with an official pricing of RM 357,800. In this test drive, we focus on two core questions: Is its hybrid system convenient for daily use? As the Final Edition, does the configuration upgrade really enhance its competitiveness?
Starting with the exterior, the overall design still retains the familiar X3 silhouette, combining toughness with a sporty feel. The front features a larger kidney-shaped grille with chrome accents around the edges, complemented by sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognition. The air intake below the front bumper is treated with a blackened finish, and the black surround around the front fog light area makes the front end look more dynamic. The side profile has flowing lines, with a strong waistline extending from the fender to the rear. The 20-inch two-tone multi-spoke wheels are exclusive to the Final Edition, paired with wide tires of 245/50 R20 at the front and 275/40 R20 at the rear, enhancing the sporty appearance. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt BMW's latest L-shaped design, which looks striking when illuminated. The diffuser design below the rear bumper and the dual exhaust layout on both sides further emphasize the sporty attributes.
Opening the door, the luxurious feel of the interior is immediately apparent. The center console is wrapped in large areas of soft-touch materials, paired with metal trim and piano lacquer panels, achieving both a great tactile and visual experience befitting of a luxury car. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel and the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system are seamlessly connected, with smooth interface performance and support for CarPlay and Android Auto. The multifunctional steering wheel is crafted from leather, offering a comfortable grip, and also features paddle shifters and a HUD (head-up display) function, allowing drivers to view information like speed and navigation without looking down. The seats are made of genuine leather with electrically adjustable front seats and memory functions, providing great support even during long drives. In terms of rear space, the vehicle has a 2864mm wheelbase. A passenger with a height of 175cm would have more than two fist-widths of legroom and adequate headroom. The rear seats also include independent air-conditioning vents and Type-C ports, with a nearly flat floor in the middle, making it comfortable for three passengers. The trunk has a standard capacity of 550L, and the rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split to expand the space significantly, providing ample room for daily items like strollers or suitcases.
Regarding performance, this hybrid system combines a 2.0T turbocharged engine with an electric motor, producing a combined output of 185kW and a total torque of 420N·m. It’s paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an xDrive all-wheel-drive system. For daily commuting, the pure electric mode offers an official electric range of 50km, which covers the needs of most people's daily travel while saving significantly on electricity compared to fuel. In hybrid mode, the electric motor powers the car during starts and low speeds, resulting in smooth and quiet driving. When the accelerator is pressed harder, the engine kicks in swiftly with a quick power response, allowing the car to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds, making overtaking very confident. The suspension system uses a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent setup that leans toward sporty tuning but isn't overly stiff. When driving over speed bumps, the suspension absorbs most of the jolts, providing a smooth ride inside the cabin. On highways, the chassis feels very stable, and during lane changes, the body experiences minimal lateral tilt. The steering is precise with minimal dead spots, making it very manageable. As for braking, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes provide linear braking force and ensure short stopping distances, giving a sense of safety.
The fuel consumption and range performance are also good. In hybrid mode, the combined fuel consumption is 3.2L per 100 kilometers, which is much more economical than the pure gasoline version. In pure electric mode, the actual range can reach about 45km, which is roughly consistent with the official data. In terms of charging, it takes 3.7 hours to fully charge using a fast charging station, while slow charging takes 6 hours. With a home charging station installed, daily commuting basically doesn't require refueling. Noise control is excellent, with almost no noise in pure electric mode, and even when the engine engages in hybrid mode, it remains very quiet. Tire and wind noise on highways are also not noticeable.
In terms of safety features, it comes standard with 6 airbags, active braking, ACC adaptive cruise control, 360-degree surround view camera, automatic parking, etc., making daily driving very reassuring. The comfort features are also abundant, including tri-zone automatic air conditioning, a 12-speaker audio system, rain-sensing wipers, and electrically folding mirrors, all of which enhance everyday convenience.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 BMW X3 xDrive30e Final Edition are clear: it combines the economy of a hybrid model with BMW's hallmark handling, while offering richer features compared to the standard version. Compared to competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 e and Audi Q5L Sportback e-tron, it delivers faster acceleration, more comprehensive features, and a more competitive price. This car is very suitable for those who want the quality of a luxury SUV while being conscious of daily operating costs, such as young families or office workers. It allows for electric commuting during weekdays and fuel-powered road trips on weekends, striking a balance between practicality and driving pleasure. If you're looking for a well-balanced luxury mid-size hybrid SUV, this car is worth considering.
