2024 BYD M6 Standard Range Review

As the demand for 7-seater electric SUVs among Malaysian families grows, the competition in the D-segment pure electric market is heating up. The 2024 BYD M6 Standard Range enters this segment as a new option, featuring an official range of 420 kilometers, Blade Battery technology, and cost-effective configurations, attracting significant consumer attention. This test drive will focus on its space practicality, driving performance, and everyday usability to help readers determine whether it suits family commutes and short trips.
In terms of appearance, the BYD M6 Standard Range adopts a simple and elegant design style, catering to the aesthetics of family users. The front boasts a closed design with a striking LED daytime running light bar for high recognition; the side profile features smooth lines, with 17-inch alloy wheels that are well-proportioned to the body without an exaggerated design. At the rear, the LED light bar echoes the front, and the chrome strip below the rear bumper adds a touch of refinement. The lighting system comes standard with LEDs across all trims, and the automatic headlights can switch between on and off when entering or leaving tunnels, providing convenience in daily use.
Inside the car, the interior is dominated by dark tones with a clear center console layout and straightforward operation logic. The 12.8-inch rotatable center console screen is the visual highlight, with decent system fluency, supporting Bluetooth and CarPlay connections. The 5-inch fully digital instrument panel displays basic information like range and speed, meeting daily needs. Regarding materials, the top of the center console is wrapped in soft-touch material, offering a pleasant hand feel, although the door panels are mostly hard plastics, which is standard at this price point. The seats are made of synthetic leather, with the front row offering 6-way manual adjustment for finding a comfortable seating position. The second row features a 60/40 split design, with ample legroom, while the third row is suitable for children or short-term adult passengers. When folded, the trunk capacity expands, making it easy to store items like strollers or suitcases for daily use.
In terms of space, the car’s dimensions measure 4710mm×1810mm×1690mm, with a wheelbase of 2800mm. In a 7-seater layout, the first two rows offer ample seating space, while the legroom in the third row is slightly tight but more practical than some other models in the same segment. As for storage capabilities, the door panel storage pockets, central armrest box, and front cup holders provide enough space for daily use. The second row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB ports, while the third row also has air conditioning vents to enhance passenger comfort in the rear.
For performance, the M6 Standard Range is powered by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor with a maximum power of 120kW (163PS) and a maximum torque of 310N·m, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 10.1 seconds. During daily driving, it offers quick initial responsiveness but lacks power for mid-to-low-speed overtaking. Switching to Sport mode delivers more direct power output, suitable for highway cruising. There are three driving modes: Eco, Standard, and Sport. In Eco mode, the energy recovery intensity is moderate, with a slight dragging sensation when releasing the accelerator, not affecting the riding experience. In Standard mode, the driving dynamics are closer to that of a fuel vehicle, making it suitable for daily commuting.
In terms of handling and suspension performance, the front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension setup performs well in filtering out minor bumps on urban roads, ensuring rear passengers don’t feel significant discomfort. When encountering speed bumps or larger potholes, the suspension rebounds quickly, although there may be slight movement at the rear. The steering wheel has moderate resistance and minimal play, making everyday handling agile. At high speeds, the steering wheel feels heavier, enhancing stability. With a ground clearance of 140mm, it can easily handle urban curbs but isn’t suited for heavy off-road conditions.
In terms of range and energy consumption, the official pure electric range is 420 kilometers. During the test drive in urban conditions (air conditioning set at 24℃, eco mode), the actual range achievement rate was about 80%, with energy consumption at 15-16kWh per 100 kilometers. During highway cruising (110 km/h), the range achievement rate was approximately 70%, with energy consumption rising to 18-19kWh. For charging, it supports both AC slow charging and DC fast charging. A full slow charge takes about 8 hours, while fast charging from 30% to 80% takes about 30 minutes, meeting daily energy replenishment needs.
The noise control performs well, with the interior staying quiet during low-speed urban driving and tire noise being minimal. At highway speeds of 110 km/h, wind and tire noise increase slightly, but they do not affect normal conversations. Regarding seat comfort, the front row seats offer adequate support, ensuring no back pain during long drives. The second-row seats are adjustable in angle, providing a comfortable ride experience, while the third-row seats are relatively hard, making them suitable for short trips.
In summary, the core advantages of the 2024 BYD M6 Standard Range are the practicality of its 7-seater layout, the safety of its Blade Battery, its smooth intelligent car system, and its well-balanced driving experience. Compared to other models in the same segment, it offers richer configurations (e.g., six airbags, 360-degree panoramic images, electrically foldable mirrors, etc.), a more affordable price, and outstanding value for money.
In terms of comprehensive performance, the M6 Standard Range is suitable for users who prioritize family use and require a range within 400 kilometers. It is capable of handling daily commutes and weekend short trips. However, the third row is compact and not suitable for long journeys with a full load, while highway overtaking power is slightly weaker, so users with higher power demands may need to consider the high-power version.
The 2024 BYD M6 Standard Range is a well-rounded 7-seater pure electric family SUV that attracts family users with its practical features and high cost-effectiveness, making it a suitable choice as the main family vehicle.
