2024 MG HS Standard Review

In recent years, Malaysia's C-segment SUV market has become increasingly competitive. Consumers not only pursue practical space but also value a balance between configuration and performance. As a brand known for cost-effectiveness, MG has precisely addressed this demand with the launch of the 2024 MG HS Standard. Priced at RM 129,900, this car features a 1.5T turbocharged engine and rich safety configurations as its core highlights. Many potential buyers are curious whether it can stand out in its class. This test drive focuses on assessing whether its static experience, dynamic performance meets the daily needs of family users, and whether its configurations are truly value for money.
From the exterior, the 2024 MG HS Standard maintains the youthful design of MG's family style. The large honeycomb grille on the front, paired with the MG brand emblem, has high recognizability. The body lines are smooth, with waistlines that extend from the hood to the rear, enhancing a muscular feel. The recessed design on the lower part of the doors also adds layers to its styling. The body dimensions are 4574mm×1876mm×1664mm, with a wheelbase of 2720mm, placing it within the mainstream range of the C-segment SUV category. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt a through-type design, creating a striking effect when illuminated at night. The silver skid plate under the rear bumper enhances the off-road feel of the SUV. As for the lighting system, all models come standard with LED headlights and automatic headlight functionality, offering convenience for daily use.
Stepping inside, the first impression is the cabin’s simple and practical layout. The center console is covered with soft-touch materials, complemented by silver trim accents, giving an overall texture that matches the price point. The centerpiece of the dash is a 10.1-inch touchscreen, which operates smoothly and supports basic multimedia and Bluetooth connectivity functions. The instrument panel is a 7-inch multi-function display, clearly presenting information such as speed, RPM, and fuel consumption. In terms of configuration, the front row features keyless entry and start system, a 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with manual lumbar support, and a 4-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, allowing users to quickly find a comfortable seating position. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, further expanding trunk space to accommodate large items. The rear air conditioning vents come standard, ensuring a comfortable experience for rear passengers. However, the front row is only equipped with single-zone automatic climate control, which is slightly disappointing.
For dynamic driving, the 2024 MG HS Standard is equipped with a 1.5T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 119kW (162PS) and a peak torque of 260N·m. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. During daily starts, the power response is enthusiastic, with sufficient torque output at low revs, making it relatively easy to follow traffic or overtake in urban areas. Switching to sport mode makes the gearbox shift more aggressively, resulting in more direct acceleration, though the dual-clutch transmission may occasionally exhibit slight jerkiness at low speeds. The chassis uses a front McPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards comfort. It performs well in filtering out minor road irregularities and does not feel overly rigid when crossing speed bumps. At high speeds, the vehicle maintains good stability, and during cornering, body roll is controlled within a reasonable range without significant swaying effects.
In terms of fuel consumption, we drove approximately 50 kilometers each in the city and on the highway. The comprehensive road condition test showed fuel consumption of about 8.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official 7.4L/100km. However, considering the high proportion of congested urban road conditions, this performance is at a normal level for the same class. Regarding braking performance, the brake pedal feedback is linear, and during emergency braking, the car’s body posture remains stable without noticeable nose-diving. In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise are somewhat audible during highway driving, but they do not affect normal conversations. Overall, the performance meets the expectations for a family vehicle.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2024 MG HS Standard lies in its cost-effectiveness. At a price of 129,900 MYR, you get features such as electric seats, LED lighting, and 6 airbags. Compared to equivalent models like the Honda CR-V 1.5T or Toyota RAV4 2.0L base models, it has a significant advantage in terms of features. The space meets the needs of daily family use, and both power and fuel consumption are well-balanced. This car is suitable for families that prioritize features and space, especially for those with a budget of around 130,000 MYR and require an SUV that can handle both city commutes and weekend getaways.
In conclusion, the 2024 MG HS Standard is a well-balanced family SUV. Although there is room for improvement in details such as the single-zone air conditioning and 4 speakers, its key aspects like space, features, and power performance meet the needs of family users. Its cost-effectiveness is its greatest competitive advantage.
