2024 Volkswagen Touareg R-Line Review

Competition in the luxury mid-to-large SUV market is becoming increasingly intense in Malaysia. German brands occupy a significant position with solid mechanical quality and meticulous craftsmanship. Launched on March 12, 2024, the Volkswagen Touareg R-Line positions itself in the E-segment, entering the market with a 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine, all-wheel-drive system, and a wealth of smart configurations. Its core selling point is aimed at being the "high-value balanced luxury choice in its class." The main purpose of this test drive is to verify whether it meets consumers' expectations of German luxury SUVs in terms of daily driving, space utility, and dynamic performance.
Approaching the Touareg R-Line, its 4878mm length paired with a width of 1984mm offers a stable and powerful stance. The front face adopts Volkswagen's family-style design, with multiple chrome trim bars running through the LED headlight assembly, echoing the honeycomb-style lower grille. The R-Line exclusive badge enhances the sporty recognizability. The side profile features smooth lines, 20-inch alloy wheels paired with 285/45 R20 tires, creating a full visual impact. The rear LED taillights adopt a smoked finish, and the dual exhaust layout on both sides further enhances the sporty appeal. The lighting system comes standard with LEDs, and the daytime running lights use a segmented design, offering high recognizability when illuminated.
Opening the door, the keyless entry system automatically unlocks. The interior mainly uses black soft materials with silver trim accents, giving an overall simple and elegant style. The central control area is equipped with a 15-inch floating touch screen, incorporating functions such as navigation and Bluetooth, with relatively smooth operation. The fully digital instrument cluster is of moderate size and can display vehicle status, navigation, and other information clearly. The front seats support 12-way electric adjustment, featuring driver memory function and thigh support adjustment. The cushioning is soft yet provides sufficient support. The rear seats use a 40:20:40 split design, offering ample legroom, while headroom performs well due to the 1717mm height. In terms of storage, the central armrest compartment has significant capacity, door storage bins can hold water bottles, and the trunk has a standard capacity of 810L, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, meeting the needs of family trips. Features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, rear independent air vents, and a 13-speaker Dynaudio sound system enhance overall comfort during travel.
Starting the vehicle, the 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine responds immediately, delivering a maximum power of 250kW (340PS) and a peak torque of 450N·m. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. During daily driving, power output is smooth, reaching peak torque at just 1340rpm. The start is brisk, and there is ample power reserve for mid-range acceleration and overtaking, with clear shift logic and responsive gear changes. Switching to Sport mode makes the throttle more sensitive, maintaining higher RPMs with a noticeable push-back feel. The chassis uses a front and rear multi-link independent suspension, calibrated for comfort. It effectively absorbs vibrations on bumpy roads, maintaining stable body posture. During high-speed cornering, the suspension provides good support, with body roll under control and precise steering with minimal slack, inspiring confidence. The all-wheel-drive system performs stably on slippery roads, distributing power evenly and enhancing driving safety.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.5L/100km. During the actual test drive, the fuel consumption in urban conditions was about 11.5L/100km, and about 8.5L/100km on highways. The overall performance meets the expectations for a 3.0T model. The braking system uses front and rear ventilated disc brakes, with a moderately long brake pedal travel and linear braking force output. During emergency braking, the vehicle's stability is maintained. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise at high speeds are slightly noticeable but within an acceptable range; engine noise enters the cabin at high RPMs but is not obtrusive. For ride comfort, the seats offer good support, making long drives less tiring. The dual-zone air conditioning cools quickly, and the independent rear air vents ensure rear passengers' comfort.
Overall, the core strength of the 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R-Line lies in its balanced product offering: the 3.0T V6 provides ample power, the full-time all-wheel-drive system enhances driving stability, the spacious interior is practical, and the rich features offer outstanding value for money. Compared to peers like the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Touareg R-Line is more advantageous in terms of price, and the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty policy also reduces subsequent usage costs. This vehicle is suitable for families prioritizing performance, practicality, and German engineering quality, particularly those who frequently take long trips or require an all-wheel-drive system. Overall, the Touareg R-Line is a "well-rounded with no significant shortcomings" luxury mid-to-large-size SUV that offers strong competitiveness among its peers.
