Specs

Competition in the luxury mid-to-large SUV market is becoming increasingly intense in Malaysia. German brands occupy a significant position with solid mechanical quality and meticulous craftsmanship. Launched on March 12, 2024, the Volkswagen Touareg R-Line positions itself in the E-segment, entering the market with a 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine, all-wheel-drive system, and a wealth of smart configurations. Its core selling point is aimed at being the "high-value balanced luxury choice in its class." The main purpose of this test drive is to verify whether it meets consumers' expectations of German luxury SUVs in terms of daily driving, space utility, and dynamic performance.

Approaching the Touareg R-Line, its 4878mm length paired with a width of 1984mm offers a stable and powerful stance. The front face adopts Volkswagen's family-style design, with multiple chrome trim bars running through the LED headlight assembly, echoing the honeycomb-style lower grille. The R-Line exclusive badge enhances the sporty recognizability. The side profile features smooth lines, 20-inch alloy wheels paired with 285/45 R20 tires, creating a full visual impact. The rear LED taillights adopt a smoked finish, and the dual exhaust layout on both sides further enhances the sporty appeal. The lighting system comes standard with LEDs, and the daytime running lights use a segmented design, offering high recognizability when illuminated.

Opening the door, the keyless entry system automatically unlocks. The interior mainly uses black soft materials with silver trim accents, giving an overall simple and elegant style. The central control area is equipped with a 15-inch floating touch screen, incorporating functions such as navigation and Bluetooth, with relatively smooth operation. The fully digital instrument cluster is of moderate size and can display vehicle status, navigation, and other information clearly. The front seats support 12-way electric adjustment, featuring driver memory function and thigh support adjustment. The cushioning is soft yet provides sufficient support. The rear seats use a 40:20:40 split design, offering ample legroom, while headroom performs well due to the 1717mm height. In terms of storage, the central armrest compartment has significant capacity, door storage bins can hold water bottles, and the trunk has a standard capacity of 810L, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, meeting the needs of family trips. Features such as dual-zone automatic climate control, rear independent air vents, and a 13-speaker Dynaudio sound system enhance overall comfort during travel.

Starting the vehicle, the 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine responds immediately, delivering a maximum power of 250kW (340PS) and a peak torque of 450N·m. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. During daily driving, power output is smooth, reaching peak torque at just 1340rpm. The start is brisk, and there is ample power reserve for mid-range acceleration and overtaking, with clear shift logic and responsive gear changes. Switching to Sport mode makes the throttle more sensitive, maintaining higher RPMs with a noticeable push-back feel. The chassis uses a front and rear multi-link independent suspension, calibrated for comfort. It effectively absorbs vibrations on bumpy roads, maintaining stable body posture. During high-speed cornering, the suspension provides good support, with body roll under control and precise steering with minimal slack, inspiring confidence. The all-wheel-drive system performs stably on slippery roads, distributing power evenly and enhancing driving safety.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.5L/100km. During the actual test drive, the fuel consumption in urban conditions was about 11.5L/100km, and about 8.5L/100km on highways. The overall performance meets the expectations for a 3.0T model. The braking system uses front and rear ventilated disc brakes, with a moderately long brake pedal travel and linear braking force output. During emergency braking, the vehicle's stability is maintained. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise at high speeds are slightly noticeable but within an acceptable range; engine noise enters the cabin at high RPMs but is not obtrusive. For ride comfort, the seats offer good support, making long drives less tiring. The dual-zone air conditioning cools quickly, and the independent rear air vents ensure rear passengers' comfort.

Overall, the core strength of the 2024 Volkswagen Touareg R-Line lies in its balanced product offering: the 3.0T V6 provides ample power, the full-time all-wheel-drive system enhances driving stability, the spacious interior is practical, and the rich features offer outstanding value for money. Compared to peers like the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, the Touareg R-Line is more advantageous in terms of price, and the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty policy also reduces subsequent usage costs. This vehicle is suitable for families prioritizing performance, practicality, and German engineering quality, particularly those who frequently take long trips or require an all-wheel-drive system. Overall, the Touareg R-Line is a "well-rounded with no significant shortcomings" luxury mid-to-large-size SUV that offers strong competitiveness among its peers.

As the owner of the 2024 Touareg R-Line, having driven it for nearly 5000 kilometers over three months, I'd like to share my real feelings! First, the interior: the R-Line's genuine leather seats come with 12-way electric adjustment, which really helps relieve fatigue when adjusting to a comfortable position during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur. The 15-inch central control screen is also very responsive, but the piano lacquer surfaces easily pick up fingerprints, requiring frequent cleaning, which is a slight downside. In terms of appearance, the matrix LED headlights are especially bright on the mountain roads in Penang at night. The 20-inch wheels paired with the body lines are very imposing, but the car's width can be an issue; you need to be careful when passing other cars on narrow roads in Malacca's old town. As for performance, the 3.0T V6 engine is really powerful; the 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6 seconds is no exaggeration. It’s extremely confident on the highway for overtaking, and the full-time four-wheel drive is also very stable on rainy mountain roads in Genting Highlands. However, the fuel consumption in city traffic jams is about 12 liters per 100 km, which is significantly higher than the official 9.5, but it's acceptable for such a big car. Overall, a solid 4-star performance, definitely worth buying!

As a 2024 Touareg R-Line owner, after driving for three months, what I want to praise most is the exterior! Every time I park in KLCC's parking lot or by the roadside of Jalan Ampang, people always turn their heads to look — the sporty R-Line body kit is just perfect, and the 20-inch large wheels paired with 285 wide tires make it extremely stable when driving on Malaysia's common highways and suburban roads. The black roof and LED taillights light up at night with maximum recognition, and my friends all say it looks like a "low-key corporate thug." I would rate the interior 4 stars because the overall quality is really good. The 15-inch central control screen operates smoothly, and the Dynaudio sound system is super enjoyable when playing Malaysian songs during traffic jams. However, there's a small regret: the piano lacquer on the center console easily collects fingerprints. Every time I take my family to Genting Highlands, my kids touch it a few times, and it’s full of smudges, so it needs frequent wiping. However, the seats are genuinely comfortable, with 12-way electric adjustment + memory functions. Driving two hours of mountain roads towards Genting Highlands doesn’t make my backache, and the rear air conditioning and sunshades are especially useful during Kuala Lumpur's 35-degree heat. Overall, the exterior is absolutely a head-turner, and I’m very satisfied with the interior aside from the fingerprint issue. It’s both classy and comfortable to use in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2024 Touareg R-Line, after driving it in Malaysia for three months, what I appreciate the most is its appearance! Every time I park near the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, there are always passersby turning their heads to look— the sporty R-Line kit is so striking. The 20-inch large wheels paired with 285-wide tires make driving on the asphalt roads around KLCC particularly stable. Even my wife, who isn't usually interested in cars, said, "The body lines of this car look much more premium than our neighbor's Japanese SUV." I'm also quite satisfied with its safety features, especially since unexpected situations often occur in Malaysia: just last week on the North-South Expressway, I encountered a sudden brake from the car in front, and the automatic braking system stopped the car directly for me, which gave me quite a scare! Also, the lane departure warning is particularly useful on the winding mountain roads in Penang. It helps prevent me from veering off while distracted. However, I would only rate it 4 out of 5 because I feel it's missing a lane change assist system—sometimes when changing lanes on the highways in Johor Bahru, motorcycles nearby can be too fast, and having a lane change warning would give me more peace of mind. Overall, being able to buy such a prestigious and safe German SUV at this price point feels quite worth it when using it in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2024 Touareg R-Line, I’ve been driving it for almost three months and would like to share my real-life experience in Malaysia. In terms of exterior looks, the R-Line kit is truly impressive! The matrix LED headlights have extremely high recognition in the rainy and foggy evenings of Kuala Lumpur. With the 20-inch wheels and 285-wide tires, it drives steadily on the asphalt roads of the North-South Expressway. However, when going through toll booths, the car often catches more glances from other drivers, which is quite satisfying. On the downside, the chrome trim on the rear tends to attract fingerprints, and every car wash requires extra effort to clean, which costs some points. Regarding the interior, the 15-inch central control screen is very user-friendly, and the Dynaudio sound system performs well when playing local radio stations with Malaysian songs during traffic jams, with solid bass. The genuine leather seats offer good support. When driving a long distance to Penang last week, sitting for three hours didn’t cause back pain. However, the storage compartment on the passenger side is a bit shallow, making it easy for phones to slide out. Also, the plastic texture of the rear air conditioning vents is average, leaving room for further refinement. The safety features are genuinely practical! The ACC adaptive cruise control was a huge help on the highway between Johor Bahru and Singapore, and the lane-keeping feature in the congested streets of Kuala Lumpur also reduced fatigue. Last time on a rural road in Selangor, I almost collided with a motorbike that suddenly appeared, but the active braking intervened in time, which was a terrifying yet relief-inducing experience. However, the sensitivity of the side airbags in the back seems a bit high—as they were triggered unnecessarily during a sudden brake once. Hopefully, this can be adjusted in subsequent OTAs. Overall, this car performs quite well on Malaysian roads, suitable for both family and business use, though there’s still room for improvement in some details.

As the owner of the 2024 Touareg R-Line for nearly half a year, let me start by talking about the interior — the overall texture is definitely impressive. The 15-inch large screen on the center console operates smoothly, and the Dynaudio sound system provides excellent sound quality when playing Malaysian songs during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur. However, there's a small regret: although the front seats have 12-way electric adjustment, the leather gets a bit hot after being exposed to the summer sun. It would be perfect if ventilation was added, so giving it 4 stars seems reasonable. Now let's talk about performance. The 3.0T V6 engine is really enjoyable for overtaking on the North-South Expressway. Stepping on the accelerator, you can feel the 450 N·m of torque, and the 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6 seconds is no exaggeration. The all-wheel-drive system performs especially well on the steep and winding roads of Genting Highlands — the body roll is well-controlled when cornering. However, the fuel consumption is indeed slightly higher than expected. In city traffic, it can reach 12L/100km, and even on highways, it’s around 9L. But considering the performance, this is still acceptable, so a performance rating of 4 stars is quite fitting. Overall, this car performs quite well on Malaysian roads, though there's still room for improvement in some details.
