2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin Review

In the E-Segment SUV field of the electric vehicle market, users have increasingly high demands for luxury, space practicality, and safety features. The 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin is specifically targeted at this segment. It is equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, delivering a combined output of 517 horsepower, with an official range of 623 kilometers, while inheriting Volvo's iconic safety DNA. These selling points are enough to make consumers who prioritize family car quality curious: can this car's actual performance match its specs? The core purpose of this test drive is to verify its daily usability, driving feel, and range accuracy, providing potential customers with a clear reference.
From the exterior, the EX90 Ultra Twin maintains Volvo's family-oriented minimalist style, with smooth overall lines. The front grille, typical of traditional fuel vehicles, has been replaced with a closed design, featuring Volvo’s signature "Thor’s Hammer" LED daytime running lights, which are highly recognizable when lit. The waistline of the body extends from the front fender to the rear, paired with 21-inch dual-tone wheels (front: 265/45 R21, rear: 295/40 R21), giving it a solid yet dynamic appearance. The rear design is relatively simple, with vertically arranged LED taillights—another classic Volvo element. The taillights are not connected by chrome trim, preserving the minimalist Nordic style. The vehicle's dimensions are 5037mm×1964mm×1744mm, with a wheelbase of 2985mm, which fits the standard profile of a mid-to-large-sized SUV.
Inside, the materials used in the interior are solid, with most of the areas on the dashboard and door panels covered in soft-touch materials, complemented by wooden trim, creating a good tactile experience. The center console layout is centered around a 14.5-inch vertical touchscreen, which responds smoothly and comes with Volvo’s smart system, supporting CarPlay and Android Auto. The instrument cluster features a 9-inch full LCD display with clear visuals that can show real-time range, speed, and navigation information. A HUD head-up display system is standard, allowing key information to be seen while driving without looking down, which is very convenient. Regarding the seats, the front seats support electric adjustment, and the leather material is soft, offering good support and comfort. The second row consists of independent seats (optional), equipped with air vents and USB-C ports. The third row is suitable for short-term rides by adults; however, it might feel slightly cramped for long journeys. The trunk has a standard capacity of 324L, which can be expanded significantly by folding down the second and third-row seats to meet the storage needs of family trips.
In terms of performance, the EX90 Ultra Twin is powered by dual permanent magnet synchronous motors, with the front motor producing 180kW (245 horsepower) and the rear motor 200kW (272 horsepower), combining for a total output of 380kW (517 horsepower) and a torque of 910N·m. During daily driving, it accelerates briskly, and as soon as you step on the accelerator, you can feel an obvious thrust. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 4.9 seconds, and this result is consistently achievable in testing. When switched to Sport mode, the power response becomes more direct, providing immediate acceleration when the pedal is pressed firmly, without any lag. In cruise mode, the power output is smooth, making it suitable for long-distance drives.
The handling and chassis performance are noteworthy. The front suspension is a double-wishbone air suspension, and the rear suspension is a multi-link air suspension, both of which support adjustments for hardness and height. When driving on urban roads, the suspension filters out most minor bumps, and vibrations when going over speed bumps are handled very smoothly. Entering corners, the air suspension provides enough support with minimal body roll. The steering wheel offers good precision with very little play, making lane changes agile. The dual-motor four-wheel-drive system performs stably on slippery roads, and there is no slippage during start-up and acceleration.
In terms of range, the official WLTP range is 623 kilometers. During this test drive, we traveled 200 kilometers on a mix of urban and highway roads, with highway sections accounting for approximately 40% and an average speed of around 60km/h. The displayed range ended up dropping by 220 kilometers, achieving about 90% efficiency. This performance is considered above average among electric vehicles in the same class. The energy consumption was 16.9kWh per 100 kilometers, which aligns closely with the official data. For fast charging, it takes about 50 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% using a 150kW charging station, while a full charge using a 7kW slow charger takes 10 hours, meeting the needs for daily use and long-distance charging.
In terms of driving comfort, the noise control of the EX90 Ultra Twin is excellent. Wind and tire noise are subdued during high-speed driving, with only a faint sound from the motor that does not interfere with conversations inside the cabin. The seats offer good support, ensuring that long drives are not tiring. The regenerative braking system features three adjustable levels; at the highest level, releasing the pedal results in noticeable deceleration, which is suitable for city traffic and reduces the need for braking. The lowest level emulates the coasting feel of a fuel car, making it ideal for highway cruising.
In summary, the core strengths of the EX90 Ultra Twin lie in its safety features, driving quality, and range performance. It comes standard with 9 airbags, a 360-degree panoramic camera, adaptive cruise control (ACC), automatic emergency braking, and other functions, offering more comprehensive safety features compared to competitors like the BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz EQC. In terms of space, the seven-seat configuration is suitable for families; while the third row is not particularly spacious, it is adequate for short-term emergency use. Regarding driving quality, the comfort provided by the air suspension and the power output of the dual motors meet the needs of daily use as well as occasional spirited driving.
This vehicle is most suitable for mid-to-high-end consumers who value family safety and comfort, especially those who need a seven-seat model and want to experience the smoothness of an electric vehicle. Although its price (RM 442,888) is higher than some competitors, its features and range offer advantages, making it a cost-effective choice.
All in all, the 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin is a well-rounded mid-to-large electric SUV. It does not have any particularly significant weaknesses and satisfies family users' needs in terms of safety, space, performance, and range, making it a worthy choice in this market segment.
