Specs

In the executive sedan market in Malaysia, consumers value both the luxurious feel of everyday experiences and have distinct requirements for safety features and practical space—this is precisely the core target area of the Volvo S90 T5 Momentum. As the main model for Volvo in this segment, it not only continues the brand's signature safety DNA but also makes targeted optimizations in configuration and driving comfort. In this test drive, we will focus on verifying whether its dynamic performance meets executive-level expectations, and whether its static experience caters to both family and business scenarios.

From the exterior, the S90 T5 Momentum follows the family-style minimalist design of Volvo: a vertically slatted grille combined with the "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights, offering a high level of recognition. The side profile is sleek and elongated, with a 2941mm wheelbase that is accentuated by short front and rear overhangs. At the rear, the "Viking Axe" LED taillights echo the design of the front. The vehicle has no overly complex decorations and uses 19-inch multi-spoke wheels to enhance its refined feel. This understated and stable design is suitable for professional commuting without appearing overly ostentatious.

Inside the vehicle, the interior maintains the minimalist logic of the exterior while emphasizing material quality. The dashboard is wrapped in large areas of soft-touch materials, complemented by metal trim and wood-grain panels, offering the desired premium tactile feel. The 9-inch touchscreen center console serves as the operating hub, with a clear interface layout supporting basic functions such as Bluetooth and CarPlay. Paired with the 10-speaker Sound Plus audio system, the daily multimedia experience is more than sufficient. The instrument cluster is a full LCD display, capable of toggling between different information interfaces, enabling intuitive reading of speed, fuel consumption, and other data while driving. The seating configuration is a highlight: the front driver's seat supports electric adjustments and memory functions, and the front passenger seat also features electric adjustment. The seat cushions are soft yet supportive. The rear outer seats come with integrated two-stage child safety seat cushions, a very practical feature for families with children—no need to install separate child seats, as it can cater to children of different ages. In terms of space, the 2941mm wheelbase provides ample rear legroom. A passenger standing at 180 cm sitting in the back seat will still have a two-fist gap between their knees and the front seat. The trunk offers a capacity of 500 liters, enough to fit two 28-inch suitcases along with several carry-on bags, making it suitable for short family trips.

In terms of performance, the S90 T5 Momentum comes equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 254 PS and maximum torque that kicks in from 1500 rpm, paired with an AT transmission. During daily driving, acceleration is quick and smooth with no turbo lag. Mid-range acceleration is particularly impressive; when overtaking and stepping on the gas, the transmission downshifts responsively, providing direct power output. Even during high-speed acceleration, it inspires confidence. The chassis features a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension system, tuned more towards comfort: when passing speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension gently absorbs most of the jolts with minimal body bounce. During high-speed cornering, the suspension provides sufficient support, keeping body roll within reasonable limits and avoiding a "boat-like" swaying sensation. The steering wheel has moderate weight, minimal free play, and precise pointing, making everyday lane changes or U-turns very maneuverable. As for fuel consumption, in our tests, we achieved approximately 9L/100km in congested urban areas, which dropped to about 6.5L/100km on highways. A combined fuel consumption close to the official figure of 7L/100km is reasonable for a 2.0T executive sedan.

Attention to detail in ride comfort: The cabin's sound insulation is well-controlled, with virtually no external noise heard at speeds below 60km/h; wind and tire noise are still within acceptable limits at 120km/h on the highway. The seat strikes a good balance between wrap-around support and comfort, making it easy to drive for two hours straight without feeling fatigued. Rear air conditioning vents and a 220V power outlet cater to the needs of rear passengers. The safety features are even more impressive: lane-change assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera all come standard. Six airbags (including front and rear head airbags) and ISOFIX child seat anchors, along with integrated rear child seat cushions, fully meet the high safety requirements of family users.

Overall, the core advantages of the Volvo S90 T5 Momentum are clear: First, its comprehensive safety features make it especially suitable for families with children. Second, its spacious interior and practical seating design accommodate both business and family needs. Third, it strikes a good balance between ride comfort and smooth power delivery, making daily driving stress-free. Compared to competitors like the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes-Benz E-Class in the same segment, it offers better value for money, with more emphasis on safety and practicality—free from overly flamboyant designs while providing features that users truly need.

If you are a consumer who values safety, needs to balance family and business use, or prefers understated luxury without excessive flamboyance, the S90 T5 Momentum is a very suitable choice. It may not have the strongest performance or the most advanced technology in its class, but it is certainly the one that best understands "practical luxury"—relying on solid product strength to meet the core needs of everyday travel.

Pros
The Scandinavian design is simple and atmospheric, the Thor's Hammer headlights have a great texture and high recognition.
The interior Nappa leather seats are comfortable, the dual-zone air conditioning cools quickly, and the rear row has independent air vents.
The 2.0T engine is responsive in city starts, stable during highway overtaking, and the suspension is comfortably tuned.
Cons
The body is too long, making it easy to scrape obstacles when looking for parking spaces in old neighborhoods or narrow roads.
The central control screen occasionally lags, responding slightly slower when switching between navigation and music at high speed.
Wind noise becomes noticeable after exceeding 140km/h on the highway; although within speed limits, there is still room for improvement.

As the owner of a 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum, I've been driving this car in Malaysia for almost two years, and the overall experience has been quite good! Starting with the exterior, the Scandinavian design is indeed timeless and elegant. The clean and sleek lines have a high level of recognition on the road, especially the Thor’s Hammer headlights. Turning on the automatic headlights during Kuala Lumpur's evening traffic jams feels particularly premium when they light up—I’m giving 4 points here because the car body is quite long, and sometimes finding a parking spot in Penang's old streets can be tricky, as there’s a risk of scratching against roadside columns. For the interior, I’d also give it 4 points. The Nappa leather seats are very comfortable to sit on, and considering Malaysia's hot weather, the dual-zone air conditioning cools down quickly, plus there are independent air vents for the rear seats. When taking family on long trips to Johor Bahru, even the elderly and children don’t complain about the heat. However, the central control screen sometimes lags a bit, like when switching music while using navigation on the highway—it reacts a fraction of a second slower. If this issue could be improved, it would be perfect. In terms of performance, the 2.0T turbocharged engine is more than adequate for city driving. During Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour, it can deliver torque at just 1500 RPM, making the car feel quick off the line. On the North–South Expressway, the car feels stable during overtaking. The steering is precise, and the suspension system is more oriented towards comfort, effectively absorbing vibrations when going over speed bumps or uneven roads—though the only slight drawback is that wind noise becomes noticeable after surpassing 140 km/h on the highway. But since Malaysia's highway speed limit is 110 km/h and I rarely drive above that, I’m very satisfied overall!

As the owner of a 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum, I've been driving it in Malaysia for nearly two years, and what I appreciate most are its interior and safety features! Let's talk about the interior first, it's so good that even a 5-star rating seems insufficient! The Scandinavian design really hits the spot for me, with its minimalist yet premium feel that makes me feel comfortable every time I get in. Especially the crystal gear shifter—it sparkles under the sunlight, and every friend who gets in my car can't resist touching it. Then there's the seat with electric adjustment and memory function, which is super convenient when my wife and I take turns driving since we don’t have to readjust it every time. The rear integrated child booster seat is also very practical, making outings with kids much less of a hassle. The central control screen is very responsive, and the dual-zone automatic air conditioning is incredibly useful in Malaysia's hot climate—it cools down the car very quickly. I'll give the safety features 4 stars; the performance is still quite impressive. The standard features like automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning have been lifesavers in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams. There was one time when the car in front suddenly braked hard, and the system stopped my car promptly, scaring me but also preventing an accident. However, there was a situation on the highway when I wanted to change lanes—I turned on the indicator, but with another car in the adjacent lane being a bit too close, the system didn’t alert me in time, which was a bit disappointing. That said, the safety features are still comprehensive enough for daily driving. Driving the S90 in Malaysia, whether for city commutes or taking the family to Genting Highlands on the weekends, has been a delight. The luxurious interior and reliable safety features make me feel that choosing this car was absolutely the right decision!

As the owner of a 2021 Volvo S90 T5 Momentum, having driven it in Malaysia for almost two years, let’s start with its exterior — giving it 4 stars because it truly feels stable and stylish. However, one star is deducted due to its Nordic minimalist design being a bit "too low-profile" in a city like Kuala Lumpur, where streets are filled with brightly colored compact cars. The body lines are very smooth, especially from the side view, showcasing the advantages of its long wheelbase. When parked under an apartment building or in a shopping mall parking lot, it always gets a few second glances; however, the metallic gray paint, while resistant to dirt, lacks the vibrant and energetic look of Japanese cars under Malaysia’s bright sun, which is a bit of a pity. Speaking of safety, 4 stars thanks to its performance in local road conditions — Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush is practically a "motorcycle maze," with motorbikes suddenly darting out and cars frequently cutting lanes! Its automatic braking and lane departure warning system have saved me on multiple occasions: there was one time on the LDP highway when the car in front suddenly braked sharply, and before I could react, the car stopped itself; and another time on the narrow Jalan Ampang road, I got distracted by the navigation and nearly crossed the lane, but the steering wheel immediately vibrated to alert me. However, one star is deducted because the reverse sensors are a bit too sensitive during rainy days, often giving false alarms when passing through water puddles. But overall, this safety system has provided me with great peace of mind amid Malaysia’s complex traffic conditions.
