In recent years, the demand for spaciousness and high configuration in Malaysia's B-segment car market has steadily increased. German mid-size sedans have garnered attention from many family users due to their durability and mechanical quality. Today, we focus on the 1998 Audi A6 public, a model Audi introduced specifically for the family market at the time, emphasizing practicality and the solid craftsmanship of German engineering. Through a static experience and dynamic test drive, let's see if it can still meet the daily needs of today's Malaysian users.

In terms of exterior design, the 1998 A6 maintains Audi's classic and steady style. The front features a family-style trapezoidal grille with four horizontal chrome strips, paired with rectangular halogen headlights, achieving a high level of recognition without being ostentatious. The body side lines are smooth, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 15-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, maintaining the elongated look of a mid-size car. The rear design is simple, with rectangular taillights echoing the front headlights, and a chrome strip under the rear bumper enhancing the refined feel. Overall, the exterior aligns well with traditional family users' preferences for stability and sophistication.

Stepping inside, the interior adopts a dual-tone beige and black color scheme, with the center console slightly tilted towards the driver for convenience. The seats are covered in fabric material and support manual front-to-back and backrest angle adjustment. While there is no electric adjustment, the thick cushioning provides decent long-term comfort. The central console is equipped with a single-disc CD player and manual air conditioning system, with clearly laid-out physical buttons and moderately resistant knobs, making it easy to use. The steering wheel is a three-spoke design with a firm grip, and the left side integrates volume adjustment buttons, enhancing daily usability.

Space performance is one of this car's core strengths. The vehicle dimensions are 4796mm×1810mm×1460mm, with a wheelbase reaching 2810mm, placing it at the upper level of its class. The front row offers spacious seating, with a passenger of 175cm having a headroom of one fist and ample legroom after adjusting their seating position. The rear space is even more impressive. A 175cm passenger sitting in the rear will have two fists of legroom and four fingers of headroom, perfectly suitable for family users on full-load trips. As for storage space, the front door pockets can hold two bottles of water, the storage compartment below the center console can accommodate a smartphone and wallet, and the trunk provides a volume of 530L, capable of easily fitting three 20-inch suitcases, meeting daily shopping or short-trip requirements.

In terms of power, the 1998 A6 public is equipped with a 2.4L V6 naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 125kW (170Ps) and a peak torque of 230N·m, paired with a 5-speed Tiptronic transmission. The power output is smooth during start-up, and the throttle response is linear, making it suitable for driving in congested urban areas. When accelerating to 60km/h, the power reserve is sufficient, and when overtaking and pressing the accelerator, the transmission downshifts actively, providing a noticeable push-back sensation. During high-speed driving, the engine operates at around 2000rpm, and noise control is quite good. The driving modes include both economy and sport. In economy mode, the gear-shifting logic prioritizes fuel efficiency, while in sport mode, the transmission delays shifting, and power response is more direct.

The handling and chassis performance embody the solid feel of German cars. The steering wheel provides precise directional control with minimal play; it feels light when steering at low speeds and stable at high speeds, enhancing driving confidence. The suspension system adopts a front multi-link independent suspension and a rear trapezoidal link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs shocks, ensuring passengers in the cabin do not feel significant jolts. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, and the chassis feels cohesive, providing a stable driving experience.

In terms of fuel consumption, we conducted tests on city congested roads and highways. In urban areas with an average speed of 30km/h, the fuel consumption is approximately 11.5L per 100km; on the highway at an average speed of 90km/h, it is about 8.2L per 100km, with an overall combined fuel consumption of approximately 9.8L/100km. For a 2.4L V6 engine, the fuel efficiency is considered average. Regarding braking performance, the front ventilated disc brakes and rear solid disc brake system ensure quick braking response and linear braking. The 100km/h to 0 stopping distance is about 42 meters, meeting the standards for vehicles of the same class.

As for driving comfort, although it lacks modern active noise cancellation technology, wind noise and tire noise are well controlled during high-speed driving, ensuring that in-car conversations remain uninterrupted. The seats are well-cushioned and offer good support, making long rides less tiring. The air conditioning system performs excellently, quickly cooling the cabin in Malaysia's hot weather. Additionally, rear seats are equipped with independent air vents, enhancing passenger comfort in the back row.

In summary, the strengths of the 1998 Audi A6 public lie in its spacious interior, solid chassis, and stable power output. Compared to its classmate, the Toyota Camry 2.4L, it boasts a longer wheelbase and more spacious rear seating. When compared to the Honda Accord 2.3L, its V6 engine offers more robust power reserves. However, its fuel consumption is slightly higher than other Japanese cars in the same category, and it lacks features such as power seats and a large central control screen, resulting in less technological appeal.

This car is ideal for family users who prioritize practicality and German mechanical quality, particularly those who frequently travel with a full load. The spacious rear seating and ample trunk space accommodate daily needs. Additionally, its steady exterior and robust driving feel make it suitable as a business commuter vehicle.

All in all, the 1998 Audi A6 public is a well-balanced mid-to-large-sized family car with outstanding space and practicality. Although it falls short in configuration and fuel consumption compared to newer models, its impeccable German craftsmanship and dependable performance give it a competitive edge in the used car market.

This old buddy's silver paint surface still shines in the afternoon sun, and the feel of it is much more solid than cars today!

This old buddy has been running for nearly twenty years, and the air conditioning is still cold enough to give you goosebumps. The rear seats can fit three big guys without feeling cramped. The only issue is the fuel consumption, which is quite remarkable; every refuel requires a bit of gritting your teeth. However, it’s still very stable when overtaking on the highway, providing a full sense of security!

Last week, I took my wife and kids to Genting. On the way down, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. The winding and slippery roads showed the stability of the old A6 chassis, and even when stepping on the brakes, it didn’t skid. My wife, sitting in the back seat, kept praising it for feeling more solid compared to her Japanese car. However, the genuine leather seats in the interior are somewhat worn out, and it’s hard to clean the food crumbs from my child that fall into the crevices. But after over 20 years, this old buddy still feels pretty decent.

Last week, I took my family to the back hill of Genting Highlands. Heavy rain made the mountain road pothole-ridden and slippery. The old A6's Quattro four-wheel drive stuck to the ground like glue, with the car body remaining steady even when cornering, so much so that my wife, holding the baby in the back seat, didn’t even feel dizzy. The most surprising thing was the braking—while going downhill, a monkey suddenly darted out, and with one hard press, the ABS kicked in, making my palms tingle, but the car stopped steadily half a meter away from the monkey. The safety performance of this old machine has never let us down on Malaysia's complex road conditions.

Previously, I drove the old Toyota Camry, and it always felt a bit underpowered – until I switched to this 1998 Audi A6 Public. On Malaysia's LDP highway during the morning rush hour, the 2.8L V6 engine's power is truly impressive. Overtaking a slow-moving truck doesn’t even require heavy pressing on the accelerator – the acceleration kicks in right away, and the performance definitely deserves a solid 5-star rating! Safety-wise, it’s reliable as well. Last time on Penang's mountain roads, I encountered rainy conditions that made the road slippery. The ESP (although an outdated version) intervened just in time, and there were no issues. I’d give it 4 stars for safety, very reassuring. As for the exterior, the classic four-ring grille and fastback lines ooze a vintage vibe. Parked next to old buildings on Kuala Lumpur’s Petaling Street, the retro feel is unmatched, and it pulls just as many admiring glances as newer models. I think 4 stars is fair. One minor gripe would be the difficulty in sourcing parts. Last time, I had to search through three auto shops to find a used replacement tail light cover. But overall, that’s just a minor flaw – last weekend, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the uphill drive was smooth with its silky gear shifts. The rear seat space is spacious enough for three kids to mess around. This old buddy just gets better the more you drive it!
