In recent years, Malaysia's used luxury car market has become increasingly active, with many consumers turning their attention to late 20th-century German models—seeking to balance luxury and affordability. The 1999 Audi A6 public, as one of the representative C-segment luxury sedans of its time, boasts a classic design language and solid mechanical quality, and still has a considerable presence today. This time, we got our hands on a 1999 A6 public in decent condition. Our main goal is to analyze its static details and dynamic performance to see whether this "classic German car" can still meet consumers' expectations for "classic luxury" in 2024 daily use.

From the exterior, the 1999 A6 public continues Audi's family design language of the time, with an overall style that leans towards calm and understated rather than overly flamboyant lines. The front features a vertical chrome-plated grille, paired with rectangular headlights. The light housings contain halogen bulbs which, though not as bright as today's LED lamp sets, were mainstream configuration back then and provide decent recognition when lit at night. The side profile showcases smooth lines with a waistline running from the fender to the rear, complemented by 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, creating a slender body proportion. The rear design is simple, with horizontally arranged taillights that also use halogen bulbs. The Audi four-ring emblem is embedded in the center of the trunk lid, and a chrome trim below adds a touch of sophistication. Notably, the paintwork on this test vehicle has been well maintained, and the factory metallic silver paint still shines under the sunlight, demonstrating Audi's outstanding paint technology at the time.

Opening the door, the interior luxury exceeds expectations. The dashboard adopts a two-tone design with dark upper and light lower sections. The top features soft-touch materials, while the bottom is covered in beige fabric, which, although lacking modern leather wrapping, does not feel coarse to the touch. The center console is primarily practical in layout, with a small monochrome display at the center and air conditioning control knobs and buttons below it. The knobs have clear resistance, and the buttons offer crisp feedback. Even after 25 years of use, they show no obvious looseness. The steering wheel is a three-spoke design, with simple audio control buttons on the left side, which, while basic, are quite convenient for daily use. The seats are covered in fabric, with thick padding on the cushions and backrests, providing decent support. The front seats are manually adjustable, including front-back, backrest angle, and height, although the adjustment knobs require a bit of extra effort to operate.

In terms of space, the 1999 A6 public's dimensions of 4850mm×1810mm×1440mm, coupled with a wheelbase of 2850mm, were standard for C-segment cars of that era. The front seating area feels spacious, with a 175cm tall individual sitting in the driver's seat having about one fist and two fingers of headroom remaining after adjusting their posture, with plenty of legroom for a relaxed position. The rear seating space is equally impressive, offering two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, meaning even with three adults seated, the space doesn't feel overly cramped. As for storage capacity, the front door pockets can fit two bottles of water, the central armrest's internal compartment is quite deep and can hold items like a wallet or mobile phone, and the rear door pockets and central armrest cupholder are sufficient for daily essentials. The trunk offers about 500L of volume with a wide opening and a regular internal shape, capable of accommodating two 28-inch suitcases. However, the fixed rear seats limit expandability.

Powertrain: This 1999 A6 Public is equipped with a 2.4L V6 naturally aspirated engine producing a maximum power output of 125kW (170hp) and a peak torque of 230N·m, paired with a 5-speed Tiptronic transmission. The power response during acceleration is not particularly aggressive; you need to press the accelerator to about one-third depth to feel a noticeable acceleration. After exceeding a speed of 60km/h, the power output becomes linear. When overtaking and pressing the accelerator deeply, the transmission downshifts quickly, and as the RPM climbs above 4000, you can feel the V6 engine's strength. The acceleration from 60km/h to 100km/h takes about 8 seconds, which is above expectations for a 25-year-old car. There is only one driving mode available, without the option to switch between sport or economy modes. However, the transmission logic is fairly smart, maintaining lower RPMs for better fuel efficiency during regular cruising.

Handling and chassis: The 1999 A6 Public features a front multi-link independent suspension and a rear trapezoidal link independent suspension—an advanced configuration for its time. The steering wheel has a slightly large dead zone and lacks precision, but it is light enough for everyday driving and does not feel laborious when parking or maneuvering in tight spaces. The chassis tuning leans towards comfort, filtering out most minor vibrations on bumpy roads. However, when encountering speed bumps or large potholes, the rear passengers can feel noticeable bouncing, a common issue with aging suspension components in older cars. When cornering, body roll is fairly controlled. For instance, while navigating a 90-degree turn at 50km/h, the body roll is not excessive, tire grip is sufficient, and there is no noticeable slip.

Fuel efficiency: We conducted a three-day city road test covering congested rush hour traffic and moderate-speed cruising. The final indicated fuel consumption was 12.5L/100km, which is not significantly different from the manufacturer's original figure of 11.8L/100km. Considering the vehicle's age, this fuel efficiency is fairly reasonable. As for braking performance, the brake pedal travel is relatively long, and initial braking force feels soft. You need to press harder to achieve adequate stopping power, but the braking process is quite linear without any sudden pitching. However, you need to anticipate braking distance in advance.

Ride comfort: The performance of this old car offers both pleasant surprises and areas for improvement. Regarding noise control, the engine noise at idle is relatively low, and wind and road noise remain acceptable at speeds below 60km/h. However, at speeds above 80km/h, wind noise becomes more pronounced, especially around the A-pillars, likely due to aging door seals. The seats are reasonably comfortable, allowing for long periods of driving without causing back discomfort. However, the breathability of the fabric seats is average, making them prone to feeling hot during summer. Notably, the vehicle's air conditioning system remains powerful. Even in the intense heat of 35°C in Malaysia, it can quickly cool down the interior.

In summary, the core highlights of the 1999 A6 Public lie in its classic German design, robust mechanical quality, and adequate space. Compared to its contemporaries like the BMW 5 Series (E39), its interior exudes more luxury, and its suspension offers better comfort, though its handling is slightly inferior. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W210), it has a lower price point and relatively affordable maintenance costs. For enthusiasts of classic cars, this A6 Public is a good choice—if you prioritize daily driving comfort and can tolerate minor issues typical of older vehicles, it fully meets your needs. However, if you are seeking modern automotive intelligent features and performance, it may not be the right fit.

In summary: The 1999 Audi A6 public is a classic German car that "becomes more charming the more you drive it." It does not boast flashy features but instead uses solid craftsmanship and reliable mechanical quality to define the essence of a luxury car of its time. It is more suitable for those who enjoy nostalgia, value cost-effectiveness, and are willing to invest time in maintaining a classic car. Whether it's for daily commuting or taking the family on short trips during weekends, it can handle the task. If you are looking for a classic car "with a story," this 1999 A6 public is worth considering.

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. We encountered heavy rain halfway, and the mountain roads had many curves. The old A6 quattro was steady on the slippery road, like it was glued to the ground. When cornering, the body didn’t sway at all—full marks for safety, well deserved. The leather seats in the interior are just soft enough; even the kids didn’t wake up after falling asleep on them. The wooden trim still feels as good as new. However, when climbing hills, pressing the accelerator deeper resulted in a slightly delayed power response, so I’d deduct one point for performance. But for this old fellow to handle Malaysia's rain and mountains, it's commendable.

This old buddy's genuine leather seats are even more comfortable than the sofa at home, and my back doesn't ache even after driving for a long time!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. Just after leaving the Kuala Lumpur city area, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. Even with the wipers going crazy, it was hard to see the road. But the old A6's chassis was so stable, it felt like it was welded to the ground, and it passed through the waterlogged pits without a hint of drifting. On the mountain road's winding section, the 2.8L V6's power was readily available, and gear downshifts for overtaking were extremely smooth. When we parked at the orchard entrance, a few Malay uncles came over to have a look and said this "German shark" (referring to the front end) has more character than many of today's new cars—19 years old, and the paintwork still shines brilliantly, all thanks to regular waxing.

Although the old Toyota I previously owned was durable, it always seemed to lack a bit of "refinement" — until I came across this '99 A6 Public. Its exterior is classic yet understated, with rounded contours parked on the streets of Kuala Lumpur exuding a restrained elegance that's a step above the ubiquitous Japanese cars. The leather seats inside remain firm even after long hours of use, though the steering wheel is a bit rough to the touch (a minor gripe). Safety is truly reassuring — I was rear-ended on the North-South Expressway last time, and while the rear bumper was slightly dented, the car's steel frame remained unscathed. During morning rush hour traffic, the 1.8T turbo engages smoothly and maneuvering through tight spots is effortless. On weekends, taking the family to Cameron Highlands, the suspension feels steady as if glued to the road while driving on winding mountain roads, far more stable than my friend's old Camry. The only small issue: the air conditioning occasionally cools slowly, but in Malaysia's hot weather, it works fine after running for a while.
