Specs

The Malaysian luxury compact sedan market has always been a battleground for the three major German manufacturers. The Audi RS3 Sedan, as one of the performance benchmarks in this segment, attracts driving enthusiasts with its 400PS power output and Quattro all-wheel-drive system. This time, we got our hands on the 2023 RS3 Sedan for a test drive, with the core objective being to verify whether it can balance performance and practicality in both daily commuting and occasional spirited driving.

From the exterior, the RS3 Sedan maintains Audi's sporty style, with smooth overall lines and an aggressive look. The front features a large honeycomb grille, complemented by sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognizability. The side profile displays compact lines, with 19-inch wheels paired with 265/30 R19 tires in the front and 245/35 R19 tires in the rear, further enhancing its sporty appeal. At the rear, the RS-specific diffuser and dual round exhaust outlets clearly emphasize its performance-oriented positioning. The taillight cluster has a smoked design, exhibiting a distinct visual effect when illuminated.

Stepping inside the cabin, the RS3's interior features black as the main color, combined with Alcantara material and metal trims for a refined feel. The dashboard layout is simple, with a responsive 10.1-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The instrument cluster is a 12.3-inch fully digital display, which can switch between various modes, including an RS-specific performance interface showing data such as turbo pressure and G-force. The front-row seats feature 12-way power adjustment with lumbar support and memory functions, offering strong lateral support and comfort even during long drives. The rear seats are foldable in a 60:40 split, and the trunk has a capacity of 321L, which is generally sufficient for daily use. However, when carrying five passengers, the rear legroom can feel a bit cramped.

In terms of power, the 2.5T inline five-cylinder engine delivers a maximum output of 400PS and peak torque of 480N·m, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and Quattro all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 3.8 seconds. In real-world driving, the power response during takeoff is swift, with no turbo lag. When switched to sport mode, throttle sensitivity increases significantly, the transmission shifts faster, and the acceleration becomes thrilling. For daily commuting, comfort mode suffices, offering smooth power delivery without feeling abrupt.

The handling performance is praiseworthy. The steering is precise, with minimal play, and the car remains well-composed during cornering. The front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension are tuned on the firmer side but do a good job of absorbing road imperfections, maintaining a comfortable ride. The Quattro all-wheel-drive system performs excellently on slippery roads, providing strong grip and stability even during aggressive driving. The braking system is highly responsive, with short stopping distances, instilling confidence in its performance.

As for fuel consumption, the average fuel consumption is around 10-12L per 100 kilometers in urban conditions, and about 7-8L per 100 kilometers on highways, which is fairly standard for a performance car. Noise insulation is done well; wind and tire noise are minimal at high speeds, ensuring a quiet cabin experience. Additionally, the seat comfort is commendable, with excellent support and cushioning, making long drives fatigue-free.

Overall, the 2023 Audi RS3 Sedan's core advantages lie in its powerful output, precise handling, and good practicality. Compared to the BMW M2 and Mercedes-AMG A45 in the same class, the RS3 offers better value for money with richer configurations. It is suitable for consumers who pursue performance while needing a daily commuter vehicle, especially young people passionate about driving. If you want a luxury compact sedan that balances performance and practicality, the RS3 Sedan is a great choice.

Pros
3.8 seconds to 100 km/h acceleration is strong, 2.5T power is responsive, overtaking is crisp and neat
quattro four-wheel-drive system provides strong grip, stable driving on rainy and slippery roads without drifting

Cons

As a 2023 RS3 owner, I previously drove a Golf GTI, and I switched to this car for its fierce 3.8-second 0-100km/h acceleration—cutting into lanes during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour? Just step on the accelerator, and it darts out immediately. The quattro grip is so stable it feels glued to the ground, even in rainy conditions. Safety gets a 5-star rating; the automatic emergency braking saved me once on Jalan Bukit Bintang. With 6 airbags and a full set of assistance features, taking the kid out is worry-free with the ISOFIX latch. Exterior gets 4 stars; the honeycomb grille is aggressive enough, but the fastback design isn’t as dynamic as a hatchback. The drawback is the narrow rear seat space; friends 180cm tall hit their heads. The B&O speakers are only three in total, not quite enough for enjoying music at high speeds. However, on weekend drives along the North-South Expressway, the HUD speed display is super convenient, and the 2.5T engine overtakes in seconds, making the RM640K price worth it!

During the morning rush hour, the 2.5T power responds instantly when you step on it, and overtaking is always swift. The interior feels truly comfortable to the touch, and with the Bang & Olufsen sound system on, traffic jams seem much less annoying. It's just a bit of a pity that the trunk can't hold too many things.

Last week, I took my family on a drive along Yunding Mountain Road. After the heavy rain, the road was slippery, but the RS3's Quattro all-wheel drive gripped the road tightly. During cornering, the car felt as stable as if it were glued to the road. The 3.8-second 0-100 km/h acceleration delivered crisp and decisive performance when overtaking on straights. However, the rear space is indeed cramped, and the child complained about their legs hurting after sitting for a long time. The Bang & Olufsen audio system in the interior is good, but with only three speakers, the sound quality was below expectations. Fortunately, the safety features are fully equipped. The lane departure warning system promptly reminded me to correct my direction in the heavy rain, and the active braking system saved the day when the car in front suddenly braked. It provided a strong sense of safety.

Previously I drove a regular family car, and in comparison, this RS3 is simply a "performance beast"! During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Malaysia, its Quattro four-wheel drive was as steady as a rock, and overtaking and changing lanes were effortless. The 3.8-second 0-100 km/h acceleration felt amazing. During the weekend drive on the Genting Highlands roads, the 2.5T power responded instantly, and the precision in cornering was perfect. The interior gets a 4-star rating mainly due to the slightly cramped rear space, which feels a bit tight for three adults. However, the Bang & Olufsen sound system could heal your mood during traffic jams, and the HUD (head-up display) was also very practical. The only minor drawback is that the rear air-conditioning vent is positioned a bit low, which is not very friendly for tall passengers. Overall, this RS3 offers great value for money among luxury performance cars. For a price of over RM640,000, you're getting such powerful performance and rich features—totally worth it!
