The executive-level electric vehicle market is gradually becoming a competitive focus for luxury brands. Consumers not only pursue the tranquility and technology brought by electrification but also refuse to compromise on the quality and performance expected of luxury brands. As the flagship SUV of BMW's pure electric family, the 2023 iX offers four configurations: xDrive40, xDrive40 Sport, xDrive50 Sport, and M60, covering power ranges from 326PS to 619PS and providing a range performance from 425km to 564km, precisely meeting the needs of different users. This review will focus on the core performance of the xDrive40 and higher configurations to see whether this pure electric flagship can balance daily practicality with brand ethos.

The exterior design of the iX breaks away from the traditional SUV's rugged framework with smooth and fluid lines. The front removes the intake grille found in fuel vehicles, replacing it with a closed panel featuring the BMW round badge, surrounded by the iconic kidney grille contours, paired with slender LED headlamps on both sides, delivering high recognition. The side of the body lacks overly complex lines, with an aerodynamic design extending from the A-pillar to the D-pillar to reduce drag, while the 21-inch or 22-inch large wheels enhance the presence of this luxury SUV. The rear design is relatively simple, with through-type taillights echoing the front, and the diffuser at the lower part of the rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness.

Inside the vehicle, the interior of the iX is characterized by simplicity. The center console has almost no physical buttons, with all functions concentrated on the 14.9-inch touch control screen, seamlessly integrated with the 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel, maximizing the technological vibe. The interior materials are quite sophisticated, with all touchpoints wrapped in soft materials. Certain configurations also include metal trims and wood grain panels, enhancing the luxurious feel. The front seats support electric adjustment, while the driver’s seat features a memory function. The balance between comfort and support ensures that long drives do not become tiring. Thanks to the 3000mm wheelbase, the rear-seat space offers more than two fist-widths of legroom for passengers of 180cm height, and headroom is also plentiful. The nearly flat floor in the middle ensures comfort even for three passengers. The trunk has a capacity of 500 liters, which is sufficient for daily luggage or baby strollers, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, further enhancing storage flexibility.

In terms of performance, the xDrive40 model is equipped with dual front and rear motors, delivering a combined maximum power output of 326PS and peak torque of 630N·m, allowing for a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.1 seconds as per official data. In actual driving, pressing the accelerator immediately reveals the instant torque output of the motors. The start is smooth and brisk, and mid-to-late acceleration is equally powerful. Overtaking can be accomplished without stepping hard on the pedal. Switching to Sport mode makes the power response more aggressive, with a significantly enhanced push-back sensation. The xDrive50 Sport model delivers even stronger performance, offering a combined power output of 523PS, a peak torque of 765N·m, and an impressive 0-100km/h acceleration in just 4.6 seconds. Meanwhile, the M60 model boasts an exceptional combined power output of 619PS, achieving a 0-100km/h sprint in a mere 3.8 seconds, with performance rivaling that of performance cars.

For the chassis, the iX uses a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension structure, tuned for comfort. During daily driving on paved roads, the suspension filters out most minor bumps, ensuring a stable body posture; when encountering speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension rebound speed is moderate, avoiding excessive shaking. The steering wheel offers moderate resistance with precise handling. Despite the large body size, the vehicle's body roll is well-controlled during cornering, providing a nimble driving experience. The all-wheel-drive system improves grip on slippery roads or during light off-road driving, enhancing driving stability.

In terms of range and charging, the xDrive40 has an official range of 425km. In daily urban traffic scenarios, it achieves about 85% of its range, while highway cruising reduces it to around 75%. The overall energy consumption is approximately 20kWh/100km. In fast charging mode, it can charge from 10% to 80% in 0.52 hours, while a full charge using slow charging requires 8.25 hours. The xDrive50 Sport boasts an official range of 564km, performing even better in reality. Its range can still exceed 450km during highway cruising, making it suitable for long-distance trips.

In terms of driving comfort, the iX excels in noise isolation. It is almost silent while driving, with well-controlled tire and wind noise. Only light wind noise is noticeable at high speeds. The seat cushioning is moderately soft, and the rear seats are equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB ports to enhance the comfort of rear passengers. Some configurations also feature an 18-speaker sound system with clear and refined audio quality, further enhancing the luxurious atmosphere of the cabin.

Overall, the 2023 BMW iX's core advantages lie in its well-rounded product capabilities: it offers the quietness and technology expected of an all-electric vehicle while maintaining the classic driving dynamics of BMW. Additionally, its interior materials and spaciousness meet the benchmarks of a luxury Executive-level SUV. Compared to competitors like the Mercedes-Benz EQC or Audi e-tron in the same segment, the iX boasts superior performance specs and better range. The xDrive40 version has a starting price of RM 418,630, providing competitive value in terms of features and price.

If you prioritize luxurious quality and technological features for family use, the xDrive40 or xDrive40 Sport will comfortably fulfill daily needs. For those pursuing even greater performance, the xDrive50 Sport or M60 can provide a more exhilarating driving experience. All in all, the 2023 BMW iX is a pure-electric flagship SUV that balances practicality with driving pleasure, making it ideal for consumers who want to upgrade to electric mobility without compromising on a luxury brand experience.

This interior feels premium everywhere I touch, but cleaning the fingerprints off the large screen made my hands sore!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. Just after passing the toll station, we encountered heavy rain. The iX's four-wheel drive was very stable, and the 630 Nm of torque made uphill driving effortless. The steering wheel also returned to center accurately. However, about the exterior's large grille, my wife said it looked like a catfish mouth, so she deducted two points. The interior's dual connected screens were large enough, but the rear air conditioning vents had no USB ports, which was a bit annoying when the kid complained about needing to charge. However, the 500 liters trunk could fit three boxes of durians, and the 425 km range was sufficient for a round trip. With fast charging, it takes just half an hour to recharge, and you can be on your way after a cup of tea at the service area.

This iX has been driven for almost half a year, and the most satisfying moment is overtaking during the morning rush hour—stepping hard on the accelerator and it shoots forward, much quicker than the fuel cars nearby. The interior feels premium, and the large screen navigation displays traffic conditions clearly, but it’s important to find the right fast-charging station; otherwise, it’s a hassle.

As an owner who has been driving the iX xDrive40 in Kuala Lumpur for half a year, the reason I gave up fuel cars and chose this one was the stunning exterior design — the floating kidney grille + coupe-like silhouette. When parked under the Petronas Twin Towers, it grabs plenty of attention, deserving a full 5 points. The interior uses olive-leaf-tanned leather, which feels more premium than the X5 I had before. However, while the 14.9-inch curved display is smooth to use, the front passenger has to stretch to adjust the air conditioning, which isn’t as convenient as physical buttons, so I’d deduct 1 point. During the Jalan Ampang morning rush hour traffic, its 6.1-second acceleration makes overtaking effortless, and the all-wheel drive is very stable. On weekends, when taking my family to Genting Highlands, the 425 km range is enough for a round trip, and fast charging takes just 31 minutes to replenish 80%. Charging at highway service areas is also convenient. A minor drawback is the 21-inch thin tires, requiring extra care when driving through the potholes in the old streets of Kuala Lumpur. Additionally, the 500L trunk doesn’t leave much space after placing a stroller. However, overall, for driving in Malaysia, the quietness and intelligent assistance features are fantastic!

Overtaking during rush hours is never ambiguous, and the 4.6-second acceleration to 100 km/h makes traffic jams a bit less annoying. With three friends seated in the back, it doesn't feel cramped, and the 360-degree camera helps me easily park in tight spots. The only slight regret is that safety doesn't score full marks, but with 6 airbags and active braking, I feel quite at ease while driving daily.
