BMW iX 2024 Review

In recent years, competition in the luxury electric vehicle market in Malaysia has become increasingly fierce, with the executive-class pure electric SUV segment being a key battleground for various brands. Consumers want the quality comparable to luxury fuel-powered cars while having higher expectations for range and intelligent features. As one of the flagship SUVs in BMW’s pure electric lineup, the 2024 BMW iX xDrive50 Sport arrives with 523PS dual-motor power, an official range of 630km, and fully equipped intelligent driving assistance. The core of our test drive this time is to verify whether it can strike a balance between "luxury" and "electric vehicle practicality," and whether it truly meets the daily needs of Malaysia’s high-end family users.
From a distance, the iX xDrive50 Sport retains the boldness of an SUV in its overall silhouette, but its lines are more rounded and streamlined compared to the traditional X5. The front face eliminates the traditional grille, replacing it with a closed panel featuring the iconic BMW round logo, paired with sharp LED headlight clusters on both sides, achieving high recognizability. The car's side incorporates hidden door handles, and the 22-inch large wheels paired with 275/40 R22 wide tires give a strong sense of power. The rear design is relatively simple, with through-style LED taillights echoing the front headlights, while the diffuser-like styling under the rear bumper adds a touch of sportiness.
Sitting inside, the first impression comes from the quality of the interior materials—extensive use of genuine leather wrapping, matte wood grain panels, and metallic trims create the atmosphere expected of a luxury car. The center control area adopts BMW's latest dual-screen design, with a 14.9-inch touchscreen central control display seamlessly connected to a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster. The interface has excellent smoothness and display clarity. The HUD head-up digital display system is standard, allowing key information like speed and navigation to be projected onto the windshield for easy visibility without looking down while driving. The front seats support electric adjustment, with the driver's seat also offering a memory function. The thick padding of the leather seats ensures comfort even during long rides. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding design, with a standard trunk capacity of 500L that can be expanded for larger storage needs, fully meeting luggage requirements for family trips. Both the front and rear rows are equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB charging ports, which demonstrates thoughtful attention to detail.
In terms of performance, the iX xDrive50 Sport is equipped with dual permanent magnet synchronous motors at the front and rear, delivering a combined system power output of 385kW (523PS) and a peak torque of 765N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is just 4.6 seconds. During actual driving, pressing the accelerator instantly delivers strong power output. Even in Eco mode, the initial acceleration is brisk, and during overtaking, you don't have to worry about the power reserve when you press the pedal deeply. Switching to Sport mode makes the power response more sensitive and enhances the pushback feeling. However, comfort mode is more than sufficient for daily use, as it provides more linear power output suitable for urban road conditions.
Regarding handling performance, the car’s steering wheel offers precise control with minimal slack. It feels light when driving at low speed but becomes steadier at high speeds, providing a sense of confidence. The front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension system is tuned toward comfort without compromising support. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs vibrations, and the body does not bounce noticeably. When cornering, the suspension adequately suppresses body roll, and with the addition of the all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle demonstrates excellent stability.
Regarding range, the official CLTC pure electric range is 630km. During our test drive, which was mainly on city roads with occasional highway stretches and the air conditioning consistently on, the actual range reached approximately 550km, achieving about 87% of the official range. This performance is fairly decent. For charging, using a fast-charging station, it takes about 40 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, whereas a slow charge would take around 11 hours.
In terms of driving and riding comfort, this car has excellent sound insulation. While driving at high speeds, wind noise and tire noise are well-controlled, and the interior remains quiet. The energy recovery system has three adjustable levels, and even at the highest level, the drag feeling during deceleration is not very noticeable, closely resembling the driving experience of a fuel vehicle. The rear seating space is very spacious; with a passenger height of 180cm seated in the rear, there is about two fists of legroom left, and the headroom is also ample, avoiding any sense of oppression.
Overall, the core strengths of the 2024 BMW iX xDrive50 Sport are apparent: strong dynamic performance, excellent range, luxurious interior quality, and abundant intelligent driver-assistance features. Compared to competitors in the same class like the Mercedes EQC and Audi e-tron, the iX xDrive50 Sport offers more powerful performance, a longer range, and a more technologically advanced interior ambiance.
This car is very suitable for families that value luxurious quality and dynamic performance. It can meet the needs of daily urban commuting as well as long-distance travel. If you are looking for a luxury-brand electric SUV and do not want to compromise on power and range, the iX xDrive50 Sport is worth considering.
In summary, the 2024 BMW iX xDrive50 Sport is a well-rounded luxury electric SUV. It not only inherits BMW's consistent driving dynamics but also strikes an excellent balance between luxury and electric vehicle practicality. It is a very competitive choice in the high-end electric SUV market.
