BMW M4 Coupe 2024 Review

In the Malaysian sports car market, the 3.0T + AWD segment has always been the focus for performance enthusiasts—balancing the practicality of daily commuting with uncompromising track-level power output. After the 2024 BMW M4 Competition Coupe was launched this August, it quickly became a popular choice in this price range with its maximum horsepower of 530PS and 8AT all-wheel drive system. This time, we got a test vehicle with the core purpose of verifying whether its performance can truly balance "street comfort" and "track passion," as well as examining whether the newly added features enhance daily usability.
From the exterior, the M4 Competition Coupe has a highly recognizable design. The overall lines maintain the low-slung stance of a two-door coupe, with the large double-kidney grille on the front featuring a blacked-out finish, paired with sharp LED daytime running lights on both sides. From a distance, it's evident that this is a performance-oriented model. On the sides, the combination of 19-inch front tires and 20-inch rear tires (front 275/35 R19, rear 285/30 R20) not only enhances the visual presence but also provides a strong foundation for handling. At the rear, the quad exhaust layout and LED taillights further emphasize its sporty attributes, with clear nighttime visibility when illuminated.
Inside the car, the balance between a sporty atmosphere and technological feel is impressive. The dashboard is wrapped in a large amount of soft-touch materials, complemented by metallic trims, delivering a tactile and visual quality that matches its luxury sports car positioning. The 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display serves as the visual centerpiece, offering smooth performance and complete functionality, making navigation and multimedia controls very user-friendly. The HUD head-up display comes standard, providing critical information such as speed and navigation, so you don't need to look down at the instrument cluster while driving. The front seats are electrically adjustable with excellent support, featuring strong lumbar support and lateral bolstering to securely hold the body during aggressive driving. Although the rear seats are two individual seats, the space is only suitable for short-term adult use and is more practical for carrying bags or child seats. In terms of storage space, the door pockets and center armrest box provide moderate capacity, sufficient for daily essentials, while the 440L trunk space is surprisingly practical and can easily hold two carry-on suitcases.
The performance is the key highlight of this car. The 3.0T inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, with a maximum output of 530PS and 650N·m of torque, paired with an 8AT gearbox and full-time all-wheel drive system, achieves an official 0-100km/h acceleration of just 3.5 seconds. During actual driving, the abundant torque output is evident right from the start, delivering a noticeable thrust with just 1/3 depression of the accelerator pedal. Mid-to-high range acceleration (such as 80-120km/h overtaking) is equally responsive, with the transmission's shift logic being precise. In sport mode, the shifting is quicker, and the paddle shifter response is very prompt. For daily commuting in comfort mode, the power output becomes smoother without being overly aggressive, making it suitable for urban roads. With regard to fuel consumption, the official combined figure is 10.2L/100km. In our actual tests, city traffic conditions yielded about 12-13L/100km, while highway cruising brought it down to around 9L/100km. For a performance car of this level, the fuel consumption figures are still quite reasonable.
The driving and chassis performance are equally satisfying. The steering wheel is precise with minimal dead zone, and during aggressive driving, you can clearly feel the road feedback; the combination of MacPherson front suspension and five-link rear suspension provides ample support when cornering, and the body roll is very well controlled. Even when taking corners at relatively high speeds, it remains stable. When dealing with bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the minor vibrations without giving overly harsh feedback, and the comfort level for daily commuting is better than expected. The braking system features ventilated disc brakes with linear pedal feel, offering plenty of confidence during emergency braking. As for noise control, wind noise and tire noise are present during high-speed driving but remain within an acceptable range. Meanwhile, the Harman Kardon 12-speaker sound system provides good audio quality, effectively masking some of the noise.
In terms of safety and practical features, standard equipment such as active braking, forward collision warning, and six airbags (including front and rear head curtain airbags) provide basic safety assurance. The 360-degree panoramic view and automated parking assist are very practical for parking a large two-door coupe like this. However, blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning are optional features, which is somewhat regrettable. If they were standard, it would align better with its luxury positioning.
Overall, the core strengths of the 2024 BMW M4 Competition Coupe are quite evident: a strong 530PS engine, precise handling, practical storage space, and relatively balanced daily comfort. Compared to its peers like the Mercedes-Benz C63 S Coupe, its all-wheel-drive system offers better stability on slippery roads; compared to the Audi RS5 Coupe, it has stronger power output and faster acceleration. The target audience is also clear—performance enthusiasts who want to unleash their passion on the track on weekends while still needing practicality for daily commuting, or young people who pursue a luxury brand and sporty attributes while occasionally needing to take their family on short trips.
To sum up, the M4 Competition Coupe is not a vehicle that solely pursues speed as a "brute force machine"; rather, it is a versatile sports car that balances performance, comfort, and practicality. If you can accept the two-door design and the additional cost of optional configurations, this is a highly worthwhile choice in its price range.
