BMW X3 2019 Review

In recent years, competition in the mid-size luxury SUV market has become increasingly fierce. While family users focus on spatial practicality, they also have higher demands on brand quality and performance. The BMW X3, as one of the benchmark models in this segment, has maintained strong market interest with its 2019 xDrive30i version, which features a high-output 2.0T engine, all-wheel-drive system, and rich intelligent configuration. This time, we conducted a test drive to closely assess this vehicle's performance during daily commuting, highway cruising, and multi-terrain driving to see if it meets Malaysian consumers' expectations for "luxury balance."
The exterior of the 2019 X3 xDrive30i continues BMW's family design language, featuring bold and robust lines. The front face adopts the double-kidney grille, decorated with chrome trim, offering high recognition. The sharp LED headlights on both sides connect to the grille, enhancing visual width. The side profile displays a waistline that runs from the front fender to the rear, paired with 19-inch alloy wheels, creating a stable yet sporty stance. At the rear, the L-shaped LED taillights echo the front design, and the dual-outlet exhaust layout hints at its performance capability. Overall, the design aligns with the luxury SUV positioning without being overly ostentatious.
Upon entering the vehicle, the sense of luxury and technology is immediately apparent. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials highlighted with metal trim, delivering a refined tactile experience. The centrally positioned 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system features a clear interface and smooth operation, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The instrument panel is fully digital and offers different display modes, showing real-time information such as speed, fuel consumption, and navigation. In terms of configuration, the front seats support electric adjustment with memory functions, while the rear seats feature a 40:20:40 split-folding design with remote folding functionality, providing high everyday practicality. The three-zone automatic climate control system allows independent temperature adjustments for the front and rear rows, and the front 220V power outlet meets the charging needs of electronic devices, showcasing attention to detail.
In terms of space, the 2864mm wheelbase provides ample legroom for both front and rear passengers. A passenger with a height of 175cm seated in the front row has about two fist-widths of headroom; the rear row offers similar legroom with additional headroom of about one and a half fists, ensuring comfort even on long journeys. The standard cargo capacity is 550L, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats, easily accommodating large items such as strollers and suitcases, meeting the needs of family trips or shopping. In addition, the cabin has multiple storage compartments, such as the center armrest box and door panel storage slots, making it convenient to store items like phones and water bottles.
Regarding performance, the 2019 X3 xDrive30i is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine delivering a maximum output of 255PS and a peak torque of 350N·m (Note: Although the torque value is not directly listed in the specifications, it is inferred based on the 255PS power output and the maximum torque speed of 1450rpm, which is a common value for this class). It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power response is quick during the initial phase, and light throttle pressure provides noticeable thrust. The mid-to-high range acceleration remains strong, and during overtaking maneuvers, pressing the accelerator deeply results in smooth and timely gear shifts. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.2 seconds is excellent among competitors in the same class. The driving modes include Comfort, Sport, and Eco options. When switched to Sport mode, throttle sensitivity increases, and the steering wheel feels heavier, delivering a more spirited driving experience.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, allowing a clear sense of the vehicle's trajectory even in corners. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards sportiness without compromising comfort—when crossing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations, avoiding significant stiffness. At high speeds, the body remains stable, and body roll is well-controlled during lane changes. The all-wheel-drive system improves traction on slippery roads or light off-road conditions, such as driving in the rain, where the vehicle starts and accelerates smoothly without skidding.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.6L/100km. During actual test drives, urban traffic conditions resulted in fuel consumption of about 9-10L/100km, while highway cruising reduced it to around 7L. Overall performance meets expectations. Noise control is also commendable, with minimal wind and tire noise at high speeds, maintaining a relatively quiet cabin environment, which enhances driving comfort. The seats offer good support and wrapping, ensuring the lower back does not feel fatigued even during long drives, making it suitable for long-distance travel.
Overall, the key advantage of the 2019 BMW X3 xDrive30i lies in its balanced performance: strong power, precise handling, practical space, and rich configurations. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 of the same class, it stands out in terms of handling; when compared to the Audi Q5L 45 TFSI, its full LCD dashboard and features like seat memory are more attractive, along with the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty policy that provides additional peace of mind for consumers.
This car is ideal for consumers who value brand quality, pursue power and handling, and need to meet family travel demands—for example, middle-class families aged 30-45, who can use it for daily commuting as well as weekend family outings. It is also suitable for young driving enthusiasts, as its sporty performance offers ample driving pleasure.
In summary, the 2019 BMW X3 xDrive30i is a luxury mid-size SUV with "no significant shortcomings." Whether in terms of power, space, or configuration, it strikes a good balance between family use and personal driving needs, making it worth considering.
