BMW X3 M 2020 Review

The luxury mid-size SUV market has been continuously thriving in recent years. Many family users, while pursuing spacious interiors, also desire vehicles that combine driving pleasure with high-quality features. As a representative of luxury brands, BMW’s X3 series has always attracted consumers with its balanced performance. The 2020 X3 M Competition represents the pinnacle of performance in this lineup — breaking the stereotype that "SUVs are just for family use" with its 517 horsepower and exclusive sport tuning. In this test drive, we will focus on evaluating whether this performance SUV can find the perfect balance between everyday practicality and track-level power, providing the most realistic reference for potential buyers.
From an exterior perspective, the sporty attributes of the X3 M Competition are almost "written on its face." At the front, the iconic kidney grille is larger than that of the standard X3, with high-gloss black inserts and an active air grille, which not only improves cooling efficiency but also enhances its aggressive look. The front bumper on both sides has been redesigned, and the three-section air intakes at the bottom are not only exaggerated in size but also feature glossy black decoration. These, paired with the front lip, further lower the visual center of gravity. On the vehicle's side, the 21-inch exclusive M wheels feature a Y-shaped double five-spoke design, paired with wide tires measuring 255/40 (front) and 265/40 (rear), adding a strong sense of power. The window frames and side skirts are treated in black, while the "M Competition" badge on the D-pillar is a direct declaration of its identity. The changes at the rear are equally distinct; the roof spoiler and diffuser kit at the bottom are sporty accents. The quad round exhaust pipes on either side are classic elements of performance vehicles, while the smoked LED taillight cluster boasts a high level of recognition when illuminated.
Once inside, the exclusive atmosphere of the M series becomes immediately apparent. The layout of the dashboard is similar to the standard X3, but all the details are performance-oriented: The M-specific three-spoke multifunction steering wheel comes with Alcantara material and red stitching. It feels solid and non-slip to hold, while the M1/M2 buttons on the left allow for a one-touch switch to preset driving modes. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster not only shows regular driving information but can also display performance data such as turbo boost levels and oil temperature, allowing the driver to monitor the vehicle's status at any time. The 10.25-inch touchscreen on the center console is equipped with BMW's iDrive system, which has seamless functionality and a rich array of features. Additionally, the HVAC control area below retains physical buttons for convenient blind operation. As for materials, the seats are upholstered in Merino leather. The front M Sport seats come with electric adjustment, heating, and memory functions. The lateral and lumbar support is excellent, keeping the body securely in place during spirited driving. In terms of features, the HUD head-up display, 360-degree panoramic cameras, and Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system come as standard, fully meeting everyday comfort and technology needs.
In terms of space, this vehicle has a wheelbase of 2864mm. The rear legroom is at a mainstream level among mid-size SUVs, and a passenger who is 175cm tall sitting in the back will have roughly a fist's width of space between their knees and the front seat back. Headroom is also relatively generous, avoiding any sense of oppressiveness. The middle floor in the rear is not overly high, so three passengers can sit on the rear bench for short journeys without feeling too cramped. Regarding storage capacity, the trunk provides a standard volume of 550L, which can be expanded to about 1600L after folding the rear seats. Stowing large luggage or items should not be an issue. The interior also features multiple practical storage compartments, such as the center console armrest and door storage slots. The positions of the wireless phone charging pad and USB ports are also very user-friendly.
Dynamic performance is the core highlight of the X3 M Competition. It is equipped with a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 517PS and peak torque of 600N·m (Note: The torque is not specified in the configuration table, but it is actually 600N·m). It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an xDrive all-wheel-drive system, achieving an official 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 4.1 seconds. During actual driving, the power response at the start is very direct, and you can feel a noticeable push-back sensation with a light press of the accelerator. Switching to Sport Plus mode significantly enhances the transmission's gear-shifting logic, with clear rev-matching during downshifts and the engine revs maintained at a high level. At this point, a deep press on the accelerator brings a surge of power, requiring almost no hesitation for overtaking. However, in Comfort mode, the vehicle becomes very "docile," with the throttle and transmission tuned for smoothness, making it suitable for daily commuting.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel of this car is highly precise, virtually free of slack. The steering effort adjusts with the driving mode—it's lighter in Comfort mode and becomes heavier in Sport mode, providing the driver with a better sense of road feedback. The chassis features M-specific adaptive suspension that supports adjustment of stiffness. In Comfort mode, the suspension filters out most small road bumps, and vibrations when crossing speed bumps aren't too harsh. Switching to Sport mode noticeably stiffens the suspension, effectively controlling body roll and maintaining impressive stability while cornering. The four-wheel-drive system is also worth mentioning, as it adjusts the power distribution between the front and rear axles in real-time based on road conditions. This ability provides better traction and control on slippery roads or during aggressive driving.
As for fuel consumption, being a performance car, its fuel efficiency isn't very high. During our test drive, mainly conducted on city roads and highways, the average fuel consumption measured approximately 12 liters per 100 kilometers. If frequently driven aggressively, fuel consumption may increase to over 15 liters per 100 kilometers. However, considering its power output, this level of fuel consumption is expected. The braking performance is also excellent. The M calipers with six pistons in the front, paired with large brake discs, offer linear and robust braking performance. During emergency braking, the vehicle maintains a stable posture without significant nosedive.
In terms of driving comfort, the noise control during daily driving is quite well-managed. Tire and wind noise are relatively minimal, with only slight wind noise entering the cabin at high speeds. The engine noise is well suppressed in Comfort mode, only delivering the unique deep growl of a six-cylinder engine upon heavy acceleration, offering a balance between quietness and excitement that many would find appealing. The seat comfort is also commendable; while the front M seats provide strong support, they remain comfortable during long drives. The rear seats are also soft, with a suitable backrest angle.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2020 BMW X3 M Competition lies in its versatility—it combines the power and handling of a performance car with the space and practicality of an SUV. Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S, this vehicle has a more advantageous price, and BMW's handling calibration better caters to consumers who enjoy driving. Compared to ordinary luxury midsize SUVs, its power and sporty attributes are in a league of their own. This vehicle is ideal for those who need an SUV to accommodate family travel yet still value driving pleasure—such as individuals between 30 and 45 years old, who may have families to care for but haven't abandoned their pursuit of speed.
To sum up: The 2020 X3 M Competition is a performance SUV with "no obvious weaknesses". It provides comfort and convenience for city commuting and unleashes passion on mountain roads or tracks during weekends. If you are looking for a luxury SUV that is both family-friendly and adventurous, it is definitely worth considering.
