Specs

In recent years, the luxury mid-to-large SUV market has been booming. Consumers not only value brand sophistication but also have higher demands for spatial practicality, power performance, and intelligent configurations. The 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport stands out as a popular choice in this segment. With a 3.0T mild hybrid engine, comprehensive driving assistance features, and upgraded interior technological appeal as its core selling points, this test drive focuses on assessing whether its actual power response, space utilization, and daily driving comfort align with its positioning.

From the exterior, this X5 retains the robust styling characteristic of the brand's design language. The front face features the iconic kidney grille paired with the M Sport package in a smoked finish, enhancing the sporty appeal of the front. The body lines flow smoothly, with contours extending from the fender to the rear, accentuating a muscular feel. The 21-inch large wheels, paired with front 275/40 R21 and rear 315/35 R21 wide tires, further enhance its visual impact. The rear's LED taillights adopt a 3D three-dimensional design with high recognition when illuminated. The dual exhaust layout below the rear bumper also aligns with the sporty image of the M Sport version.

Inside the cabin, the interior adopts BMW's latest design language. The dual-screen setup of a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 14.9-inch central control screen is particularly eye-catching. The system operates smoothly, supporting both touch and gesture controls, making everyday use convenient. The center console uses high-quality materials, with large areas wrapped in soft-touch materials complemented by metallic trim, meeting the standards of a luxury vehicle. The front seats support electric adjustment, offer good support, and ensure comfort during long drives. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split design, and when folded down, the trunk capacity expands from 650L, catering to the needs of family trips or the loading of large items. Additionally, the car is equipped with a Harman Kardon 16-speaker audio system that delivers outstanding sound quality, while the HUD head-up display allows the driver to focus on the road, enhancing driving safety.

In terms of power, this car is equipped with a 3.0T inline-six turbocharged engine combined with a 48V mild hybrid system, delivering a maximum power output of 280kW (381PS) and a peak torque of 540N·m. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.4 seconds. During actual driving, the power response in the initial phase is quick; a light press on the accelerator generates a noticeable push-back sensation. Mid-to-late stage acceleration remains strong, and overtaking requires just a firm press on the accelerator, with the transmission swiftly downshifting for direct power delivery. Switching to Sport Mode makes the throttle response sharper, and the shifting logic more aggressive, meeting the driver's demands for sporty performance.

In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal play, and the steering feels stable at high speeds, providing ample confidence. The suspension employs a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent setup, with a tuning bias towards firmness without compromising comfort. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs vibrations, ensuring no significant harshness. During cornering, the body roll is well controlled, and the wide tires provide ample grip. Overall handling performance ranks among the best in its class of SUVs.

The daily driving comfort is commendable, with the vehicle exhibiting good suppression of wind noise and road noise. The interior remains quiet even at high speeds. The seats strike a balance between support and wrap-around comfort, ensuring long rides remain comfortable. As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.3L/100km. During the actual test drive, the fuel consumption in urban conditions was approximately 11L/100km, while on highways it was about 8L/100km, showing an average performance.

In terms of safety features, this car comes standard with 8 airbags, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, active braking, ACC adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree panoramic camera, and more. The comprehensive safety features provide ample protection for passengers.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport lie in its powerful performance, precise handling, and comprehensive features. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 in the same class, it has an advantage in terms of power parameters and better acceleration performance. In comparison to the Audi Q7 55 TFSI, it offers a more technologically advanced interior and superior handling. This car is suitable for consumers who prioritize performance and driving pleasure while also requiring practical family functionality. Whether for daily commuting or long-distance travel, it can easily meet their needs.

Pros
M Sport exterior package paired with 21-inch large wheels, highly eye-catching, bold and aggressive styling
Pure electric range of 110km meets urban commuting needs, electricity cost is half that of fuel

Cons
Battery capacity is only 7kWh, fast charging takes half an hour, and long-distance pure electric range is insufficient.
Fuel consumption in urban congestion is relatively high, and actual fuel consumption is higher than official figures.
The rear middle floor is relatively high, making the middle passenger's seating comfort poor.

Owner of 2025 BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport
As the owner of the 2025 X5 xDrive50e and having used it for three months in Malaysia, I honestly feel like I made the right choice! Previously, I was driving an older model GLC, and after switching cars, I was immediately captivated by the M Sport's appearance—21-inch large wheels paired with 315 rear tires, ensuring maximum attention in the traffic on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur. The 5-star appearance score is well-deserved. The safety is beyond question; last week on the Penang expressway, when a motorcycle suddenly changed lanes, the automatic braking system instantly intervened. With 8 airbags and a full set of active safety features, it gives a strong sense of security. The 110km pure electric range is amazing! On workdays, commuting from PJ to KLCC, the pure electric mode is totally sufficient, and the electricity cost is half of what I used to spend on fuel. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands is a breeze with the 3.0T engine and motor delivering 700N·m of torque—climbing hills is effortless, and the xDrive feels incredibly stable. A small drawback is that the battery is only 7kWh, requiring a 30-minute wait for fast charging, but an overnight home slow charge is sufficient. Overall, being able to own a luxury PHEV of this level for 490,000 MYR is worth it!

Owner of 2025 BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport
As the owner of the 2025 X5 xDrive50e M Sport, after driving it for three months in Malaysia, I truly feel that this car is worth every penny! Full marks for the exterior, the M Sport package combined with the 21-inch large wheels make it stand out on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, with a head-turning rate far exceeding my previous GLE 350e and a much bolder presence. During the morning rush hour, the pure electric mode is quiet and fuel-efficient, providing 110km of range which is enough for two days of city driving, and the electricity cost is just a few dollars, saving so much compared to a fuel car. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands is a breeze with the 489 horsepower from the 3.0T engine and electric motor, delivering 700Nm of torque for effortless hill climbing, and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system feels incredibly stable. The safety features are comprehensive, with 8 airbags + automatic emergency braking. The only minor drawback is the battery capacity of only 7kWh, making pure electric mode less practical for long distances. However, overall, this car performs perfectly on Malaysian roads, highly recommended!

Owner of 2025 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport
As the owner of a 2025 X5 xDrive40i M Sport, after driving it for three months in Malaysia, I am overall very satisfied. Compared to the previous generation GLE, the interior of this generation X5 is full of a sense of technology—the 12.3-inch instrument cluster + 14.9-inch connected screen runs smoothly, and the Harman Kardon sound system is powerful enough to enjoy Malaysian songs on the highway. In terms of performance, the 3.0T + 48V mild hybrid system handles Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour traffic smoothly, with no jerks at low speeds; on weekends, driving on Genting Highlands' winding roads, the xDrive offers stable traction and inspires confidence when cornering, although the fuel consumption is higher than the official 9.3L, reaching 12L in city traffic. The exterior M Sport package looks very striking, and the 21-inch wheels turn heads on the road. However, the rear middle floor is a bit high, making it uncomfortable for the middle passenger when seating three people. Overall, at a price of 460,000 MYR, it is very competitive among executive SUVs.

Driving on a mountain road in heavy rain, the four-wheel drive's grip is so stable it feels like it's glued to the ground, and the sound of the M package is super exciting!
