BMW X6 2020 Review

In recent years, the luxury mid-size coupe SUV market has been gaining popularity locally — consumers want the off-road capability and space of an SUV without sacrificing the sporty and streamlined design of a coupe. As a representative model in this segment, the 2020 BMW X6 public introduces a more aggressive exterior design and upgraded technological features in this revamped version. Our primary goal during the test drive is to see if it can maintain the brand's sporty DNA while meeting the practical needs of local family users on a daily basis.
In terms of appearance, the overall style of the 2020 X6 public is more aggressive than the previous generation. The front design retains BMW's signature kidney grille, but with an increased size and black glossy trim inside, making it highly recognizable. The new headlight assembly on both sides features a refreshed design, with slender LED daytime running lights connecting to the upper edge of the grille, visually broadening the front look. Below, the front bumper incorporates a three-part air intake design, giving the car a more sporty appearance. On the side, the coupe SUV's sloping roofline becomes significantly noticeable from the B-pillar, paired with 21-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels (standard on top-tier models), creating a balanced and powerful side profile. At the rear, the newly designed LED taillights feature a smoked finish, with L-shaped light strips inside that are highly distinguishable when lit. The dual exhaust system integrated into the rear bumper, combined with diffuser-style decorations, enhances the sporty characteristics.
Inside the car, the luxury feel has noticeably improved compared to the previous version. The dashboard is wrapped in a large amount of soft materials, with leather or piano paint trim used in areas within reach, matching the refinement expected from a luxury brand. The cockpit layout is driver-oriented, with a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen seamlessly connected. The screen resolution is high, and operations are smooth. The new car is equipped with the latest iDrive 7.0 system, supporting voice controls, CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity, making daily use quite convenient. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, with front seats offering electric adjustment and heating functions. Adjustable lumbar support ensures comfort during long drives.
In terms of space performance, the 2020 X6 public has dimensions of 4935mm×2004mm×1696mm, with a wheelbase of 2975mm. The front row offers ample seating space, and a 180cm tall occupant still has a one-fist-and-two-fingers headroom after adjusting the seating position. The rear space is decent, with the same height passenger having two fists of legroom, but due to the sloping roofline, headroom is reduced to four fingers, which is not ideal for taller passengers. For storage capacity, the front central armrest box is relatively large, and the door panel storage slots can hold two bottles of mineral water. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 580 liters, which can be expanded to 1525 liters by folding down the rear seats, enough to meet the needs of daily family shopping or short trips. The rear row is also equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB charging ports, showing attention to detail.
In terms of performance, the 2020 X6 public we tested is equipped with a 3.0T inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 340 horsepower and a peak torque of 450 Nm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the engine offers abundant low-end torque with a responsive throttle, making it quick off the line and with a linear power delivery. When switched to sport mode, the transmission downshifts more proactively, and a firm press on the accelerator provides a noticeable surge, with ample power for overtaking. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 5.5 seconds, and our actual tests closely matched the official data.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers precise control with minimal play and clear directional accuracy, consistent with BMW's sporty tuning style. The suspension system adopts a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, with a firm tuning. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, providing good stability. However, when passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, rear passengers may feel significant vibrations, which slightly compromises comfort.
In fuel consumption performance, we conducted a comprehensive road test with 60% city roads and 40% highways. The final combined fuel consumption was 10.2L per 100 kilometers, which is acceptable for a 3.0T engine model. In the braking performance test, the braking distance from 100km/h to 0 was 38.5 meters, showing stable performance.
In terms of driving comfort, the vehicle's noise control is done well. Wind noise and tire noise are not obvious during high-speed driving, and engine noise is almost inaudible during normal driving, with only a slight amount of sound entering the cabin during rapid acceleration. The seat padding is moderately soft and provides good support, ensuring long rides are not tiring.
Overall, the core highlights of the 2020 BMW X6 public include its aggressive exterior design, luxurious interior quality, and powerful performance. Compared to its competitor, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, it excels in handling performance and offers more advanced technology features; compared to the Audi Q8, its coupe-style design is more distinctive. However, its rear headroom and comfort on bumpy roads are its drawbacks. To conclude, this car is more suitable for young consumers who value brand image and pursue a sporty driving experience, or users who need a medium-sized SUV that balances business and daily use. If you are a family user who prioritizes spaciousness, you might want to consider more traditional SUV models; but if you are looking for a coupe SUV with personality and luxury, the 2020 BMW X6 public would be a great choice.
