The luxury mid-size SUV market in Malaysia has always maintained steady popularity. Consumers not only value brand premiums but also require a balance in design, configuration, and performance. The 2023 BMW X6 xDrive40i M Sport, as a popular choice in this segment, highlights sporty exterior kits and intelligent configurations in this upgrade while retaining the iconic coupe-style SUV design of the X6. The main purpose of our test drive this time is to see whether this car can balance sport performance and family practicality in daily usage scenarios and to explore its actual improvements compared to the previous model.

At first glance, the 2023 X6 xDrive40i M Sport gives a stronger sense of sportiness compared to the previous model. The front face features a larger-sized kidney-shaped grille, coupled with M Sport’s exclusive high-gloss black trim, offering high recognition. The body lines maintain the coupe-SUV fastback design, with a smooth curve extending from the A-pillar to the rear. The 22-inch M sport wheels paired with blue M brake calipers further enhance the sporty attribute. For the rear, the LED taillights are treated with a smoked finish, complemented by a quad exhaust layout, resulting in a more aggressive visual effect. In terms of lighting systems, the full-LED headlights come with automatic switching and adaptive high-low beam functions, providing clear illumination at night. The front fog lights are also LED, offering both practicality and aesthetics.

Inside the car, the sense of luxury and technology is quite prominent. The center console is wrapped in large areas of soft-touch materials, combined with metallic trims and piano lacquer panels, delivering a delicate texture. The size of the central control screen has been upgraded to 14.9 inches, seamlessly integrated with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, offering smooth operation and excellent display clarity. The HUD head-up display is standard, showing core information such as speed and navigation, reducing the need for the driver to shift their vision. The seats use M Sport's exclusive sport seats, with 8-way electric adjustment and memory function for the front seats, providing excellent support and comfort, even for long drives. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-folding design, and when folded down, the cargo space can expand from 580L to a larger capacity, making it convenient for storing baby strollers or suitcases. Regarding storage space, the front central armrest box and door panel storage compartments are quite spacious, the wireless mobile charging pad is conveniently located, and the 220V power outlet meets outdoor electricity needs.

In terms of power, this car is equipped with a 3.0T inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 381PS and a maximum torque of 520N·m, paired with an 8AT transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.5 seconds. During actual driving, the power response at the start is very prompt, and even a light press on the accelerator provides an evident push-back feeling. When switching to sport mode, the shifting logic of the transmission becomes more aggressive, with quicker downshifts, giving full confidence during overtaking. For daily driving, the comfort mode is sufficient, providing smooth power output suitable for city commuting. As for fuel consumption, during our test drive with mixed road conditions, the fuel consumption was approximately 10.2L per 100 kilometers, which is close to the official figure of 9.6L. This performance is fairly standard for a 3.0T model.

The handling and chassis performance are in line with BMW's consistent standards. The steering wheel is precise, with minimal play, and the directional accuracy is clear. In Sport mode, the steering feel becomes heavier. The suspension system features a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards a sporty setup but not overly stiff. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, it effectively filters out vibrations, ensuring the rear passengers do not feel overly jolted. When cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the all-wheel-drive system provides sufficient grip, resulting in strong driving stability. Regarding noise control, wind noise and tire noise are not noticeable at high speeds, and engine noise only enters the cabin when the RPM exceeds 3000, but it is not harsh. Overall, the NVH performance is excellent.

In terms of safety features, this car is equipped as standard with 6 airbags, a 360-degree panoramic camera, automatic parking, lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking, providing ample safety assurance for daily driving. For intelligent configurations, the voice control supports both Malay and English, allowing control of navigation, air conditioning, music, and other functions with high recognition accuracy. The Harman Kardon sound system features 16 speakers, delivering clear sound quality and deep bass, satisfying the needs of music enthusiasts.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 BMW X6 xDrive40i M Sport lie in its sporty exterior design, rich configuration, and balanced power performance. Compared to its segment rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, it offers stronger performance and more precise handling; compared to the Audi Q8, its interior presents a greater sense of technology and luxury. This car is suitable for consumers who value brand recognition, seek sporty performance, and also need family practicality, such as middle to high-income individuals aged 30-45. It can be used for daily commuting as well as weekend short trips.

In conclusion, the 2023 BMW X6 xDrive40i M Sport, while retaining the classic design of the X6, enhances its competitive edge through the M Sport package and configuration upgrades. It may not be a perfect car, but it is a well-rounded choice in the luxury mid-to-large coupe SUV market.

Pros
The xDrive four-wheel-drive system performs stably on slippery/muddy mountain roads, cornering without drifting with strong grip.
3.0T power is abundant, with sufficient low-end torque; overtaking/climbing is confident and following cars is effortless.
Fastback design is highly attractive, with a high return rate of attention, making it more eye-catching than vehicles in the same class.
Cons
22-inch wheels cause noticeable bumpiness on rough roads, affecting comfort
Higher fuel consumption in urban areas/full load (about 12L), exceeding the official figures
Fastback design compromises trunk space, rear headroom is cramped, and passengers over 180cm may easily hit their heads

Last week, I took my family on an outing to Genting. On the way down the hill, we encountered sudden heavy rain, but the 22-inch tires gripped the road very well, and the xDrive all-wheel drive system kept the turns steady. The 14.9-inch central control screen provided clear navigation, and the Harman Kardon sound system drowned out the sound of the rain. However, the safety buckle occasionally got stuck, and the interior stitching showed slight pilling, so deducting 1 point seems reasonable. The 360-degree camera helped me avoid motorcycles during the traffic jam at the foot of the mountain, but I had to be careful maneuvering the long car through narrow alleys. Overall, it is worth 750,000 MYR, but there’s still room for refinement in the details.

As the owner of the 2023 X6 xDrive40i M Sport for half a year in Malaysia, I truly feel I made the right choice! Previously, I drove a Japanese SUV and compared it with the GLE Coupe when switching cars, but the X6’s coupe-like design and the explosive power of the 3.0T inline-six engine won me over. During rush hours near KLCC, the 3.0T’s low-end torque is enough to smoothly follow traffic without any effort. On weekends driving on the East Coast Highway, it delivers 500Nm of torque at just 1500rpm, making overtaking easy and confident. However, the 22-inch rims can feel a bit bumpy on rough roads, and the city fuel consumption of about 12L is somewhat high. The safety features are very comprehensive; the 360-degree camera makes parking in the narrow alleys of Kuala Lumpur extremely convenient, and the lane-keeping assist on the highway is very stable, providing a strong sense of safety!

Every morning during rush hour, weaving through gaps between cars feels exhilarating. The 3.0T engine easily leaves the dawdling cars ahead with just one press of the gas pedal, and even with three buddies in the back seat, it doesn’t feel cramped. The only downside is that the black paint absorbs too much heat under the blazing sun, so I need to run the air conditioner for three minutes after getting in—but looking at this sleek, sloping design, it’s worth it!

Last week, I took my child to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. On the way, we encountered a heavy rain, and the mountain road became as slippery as if it were coated with oil. The xDrive system of the X6 was indeed stable. While taking corners, the steering feedback was precise, and there was no sign of the car body swerving, providing a strong sense of safety. However, the engine noise during sudden acceleration was louder than expected, so it loses some points for that. When parked at the orchard entrance, the passing farmers all took a second look. The fastback design certainly stood out amidst the greenery. But the occasional false alarm from the safety assistance system docks a few more points. Otherwise, it could have been perfect.

Last Saturday, I took my wife and child to Genting's back mountain to pick mangosteens. On the way, we encountered a heavy rain; the tire ruts were so deep you could raise fish in them. The xDrive of the X6 didn't slip on the muddy slope, but when the 2.0T engine climbed the incline, pressing the accelerator too hard made it feel a bit "choked" — this is the reason for deducting 1 point. However, in the heavy rain, when the Hofmeister kink lights on the side windows lit up, it was like adding a golden edge to the black body. My wife cradled our sleeping baby on the Nappa leather seats and said it felt even steadier than the sofa at home. When we parked at the foot of the mountain, the mangosteen seller came over and took a look: “The BMW coupe SUV, gorgeous!”
