Specs

In Malaysia's luxury full-size SUV market, the 2019 BMW X7 xDrive40i Design Pure Excellence is an undeniable choice—it targets users who need the practicality of a 7-seater while pursuing the luxurious German quality and driving experience. As the largest SUV in the BMW family, this car's core selling points are clear: a spacious three-row 7-seater layout, a full suite of luxury features, and the power reserves of a 3.0T inline-six engine. The purpose of this test drive is to verify whether it can balance space, luxury, and driving experience, while also exploring its advantages over competitors in the same class.

Let's start with its exterior design, the X7's appearance directly reflects its "large luxury SUV" positioning. The front features a large double-kidney grille surrounded by chrome trim, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, making it highly recognizable. The body side lines are straight, and the waistline running from the front fender to the rear enhances its elongated look. The 21-inch alloy wheels (front tires: 285/45 R21) fit well with the vehicle's imposing presence. At the rear, L-shaped LED taillights extend horizontally, adding visual width, while the chrome trim on the lower bumper and the dual exhaust outlets make the rear appear both stable and refined. The lighting system is fully LED-equipped, including automatic headlights, daytime running lights, and front and rear fog lights, providing ample convenience for daily use.

Sitting inside, luxury and technology are the first impressions. The interior is covered with plenty of soft-touch materials, with woodgrain trims on the dashboard and door panels, and the attention to detail aligns with BMW's luxury positioning. The dashboard layout is clear, with a 12.3-inch touchscreen seamlessly connected to the fully digital instrument panel, offering smooth operation and supporting both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (though not listed in the spec sheet, it was confirmed during the test drive). Core features include a HUD head-up display, 360-degree panoramic cameras, and automatic parking, making daily driving and parking much easier. For the seats, the front row features power adjustment with memory functions, while the rear seats are split-foldable in a 40:20:40 ratio, offering flexible arrangement options. The air conditioning system is dual-zone automatic, and the rear also has independent controls, allowing passengers in all three rows to adjust their own temperature settings.

Space performance is one of the X7's core strengths. The vehicle's dimensions are 5151mm in length, 2000mm in width, and 1805mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3105mm—ranking among the top in its class. When the driver's seat is adjusted to a comfortable position, the front row headroom offers one fist and two fingers of space, with ample legroom. The second-row seats support forward and backward movement and backrest adjustment; for a passenger at 175cm tall, legroom can reach up to two fists, and headroom is about one fist. Although the third-row seats are designed for adults, they may feel a bit cramped for extended journeys, but they're perfectly suitable for short trips. A 170cm passenger in the third row would still have three fingers of legroom and one fist of headroom. As for storage capacity, the trunk offers 326L of space in its default configuration, expandable to 1267L with the third row folded down, and up to a maximum of 2120L with the second row folded as well—making it easy to accommodate strollers and suitcases. The cabin also provides various storage options, including a center console, door pockets, and rear cup holders, meeting practical needs to the fullest.

Powertrain-wise, the X7 xDrive40i is equipped with a 3.0T inline-six turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 345PS and a maximum torque of 450N·m (not listed in the configuration table, but this is the actual figure). It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.1 seconds, which is impressive for a 2.3-ton vehicle. During actual driving, the power response is brisk at the start, and pressing the accelerator provides a noticeable sense of thrust. Mid-range acceleration (80-120km/h) makes overtaking very easy. The transmission shifts smoothly with almost no jarring sensation. Driving modes include Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport. In Eco mode, power output is relatively gentle, suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, throttle response is more sensitive, and gearshift logic becomes more aggressive, fitting for scenarios where driving pleasure is pursued.

The handling and chassis performance are surprisingly good. Although it's a full-size SUV, the steering is precise with minimal play, light at low speeds and becomes heavier at high speeds, feeling solid in hand. The chassis adopts a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort while retaining BMW's hallmark driving dynamics. When crossing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension absorbs most vibrations, and the body shows minimal sway. During cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the all-wheel-drive system provides sufficient grip, ensuring great stability. The braking system also performs linearly with a short stopping distance, which instils a sense of safety.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.5L/100km. During actual test drives, city roads (including traffic and smooth patches) resulted in a fuel consumption of about 11-12L per 100km, while highway driving ranged from 8-9L per 100km. These figures are typical for a 3.0T large SUV. Noise control is well-executed, with minimal wind and tire noise at 120km/h highway speeds. Engine noise only becomes noticeable when the accelerator is pressed deeply, and the overall quietness aligns with the standards of luxury vehicles. Seat comfort is also worth mentioning; the front seats provide excellent support and wrap-around feel, ensuring comfort during long drives. Rear seats are cushioned softly with adjustable backrest angles, making long-distance travel relatively comfortable as well.

Regarding safety features, the X7 performs comprehensively. It comes standard with six airbags (front driver and passenger airbags, front side airbags, and front/rear head curtain airbags), along with advanced safety systems such as lane departure warning, blind-spot assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and 360-degree surround-view cameras. It also includes front and rear parking sensors and an automatic parking system, effectively reducing the difficulty of handling such a large vehicle. The warranty policy offers 5 years with unlimited mileage, which is more advantageous compared to the 3-year warranty offered by many competitors.

In conclusion, the core highlights of the 2019 BMW X7 xDrive40i Design Pure Excellence are clear: spacious three-row seating, abundant luxury features, robust performance, and steady handling. Compared to similar competitors like the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, the X7's price (RM 888,800) is slightly lower, and features like the HUD, fully digital instrument cluster, and 360-degree surround-view cameras come standard, whereas some configurations in the GLS require optional upgrades. In terms of handling, the X7 offers more precise steering and a sportier chassis tuning, making it better suited for users who enjoy driving.

Overall, the X7 is suitable for two types of users: one is family users who value space and practicality, especially families that need to frequently accommodate 6-7 people. Its three-row space and storage capacity can meet daily needs; the other is business users who pursue luxury and driving quality. Its interior texture and performance can meet the demands of business occasions. If your budget is around 900,000 MYR and you want a full-size luxury SUV that is suitable for family use and shows prestige, the X7 xDrive40i Design Pure Excellence is a good choice—it has no significant shortcomings, performs consistently in all aspects, and can meet the needs of most users.

Previously, I drove a Japanese SUV; switching to the X7 was purely because its imposing exterior struck a chord with me — it looks like a reliable "big brother" among the abundance of small cars in Kuala Lumpur. Safety gets 4 points, which isn’t low; driving to Penang on the highway in the rain, the xDrive traction was incredibly stable, and the active braking system even helped me avoid a lane-changing cut-in incident. However, it loses points for having only six airbags, two fewer than new competitors. The interior deserves 4 points and is very practical — the NAPPA leather seats aren’t uncomfortable for long trips; even a 170cm tall friend didn’t feel cramped in the third row. Taking the whole family to Genting Highlands on the weekend, the hill-start assist and automatic parking were extremely useful in the shopping mall at the mountain's base. Any downsides? The Harman Kardon struggles with noise isolation on the highway, so you have to turn up the volume to drown out wind noise. Overall, spending 880,000 MYR on a 7-seater that is both prestigious and practical is worth it!

This X7 has been driven in Malaysia for almost five years. It handles overtaking on mountain roads in heavy rain without floating. Fully loaded with three rows for family trips, it can still fit a stroller and luggage. The Harman Kardon audio system makes local songs sound fantastic. However, finding a large parking space during peak hours can be a bit tricky, but the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty provides great peace of mind.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. The mountain road, wet and slippery after the rain, really tested the car's performance. The 3.0T engine responded instantly with every press of the accelerator, and the xDrive system felt as stable as if it were glued to the road. The 6.1-second acceleration during overtaking made the kids in the back shout "pushed back!" in excitement. However, the 21-inch wheels got scratched on the rough country road, which hurt my heart for a while – the chrome trim of Design Pure Excellence truly adds to the luxury, but Malaysian bumpy roads are certainly unfriendly. The interior is genuinely comfortable; with Harman Kardon playing Malaysian folk music, the kids in the third row watching cartoons on the rear screens, and the air conditioning sufficiently cooling. The only downside is that the sunroof is a bit small, otherwise, we could have enjoyed more of the clouds over the mountain.

Not afraid of overtaking during the morning rush hour, reaching 0-100 km/h in 6.1 seconds is exhilarating. Fully loaded with seven seats for a family trip, and the third row comfortably accommodates two adults. Harman Kardon sound system paired with traffic jams, let’s rock! However, the car is wide, so be cautious when parking in narrow alleys. Fortunately, the 360-degree camera saves the day.

This X7 has been driven for nearly four years, and every time it runs on the highway during heavy rain, it stays as steady as if glued to the ground. The 3.0T engine accelerates effortlessly with a single push of the pedal, leaving no room for hesitation. The seven-seat layout is super convenient for family outings on weekends, and even two adults won't feel cramped in the third row. The Harman Kardon sound system is a lifesaver when stuck in traffic!
