Specs

In Malaysia's luxury SUV market, E-Segment models have consistently been the go-to choice for users seeking space and quality. These vehicles are designed to meet the practical needs of daily family commutes while maintaining a sense of sophistication for business travel. BMW's launch of the 2023 XM, the brand's first mass-produced M series hybrid SUV, directly caters to the niche demand for "performance + luxury + new energy." With its 4.4T twin-turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor hybrid system and a suite of features typically seen in models priced at millions, many consumers are curious: Is this car merely for show, or is it truly a benchmark? This time, we got our hands on the actual vehicle to figure out whether it can truly live up to its nearly RM1.4 million price tag in terms of daily driving, space practicality, and hybrid system performance.

The exterior design of the 2023 XM is highly distinctive, following a robust and sporty style. The front features an oversized kidney grille with a black mesh structure, complemented by sharp LED headlights on both sides, creating a strong visual impact. The car's side profile boasts sleek lines, with a waistline stretching from the hood to the rear, making the body appear longer. The 23-inch large wheels, combined with 275/45 R23 front tires and 315/40 R23 rear tires, further enhance its sporty attributes. At the rear, the standout feature is the through-type LED taillights, which are highly recognizable when lit, along with the quad exhaust layout below, underscoring its performance-oriented nature. In terms of lighting, the vehicle comes standard with full-LED lighting, including automatic headlights and front fog lights.

Stepping inside, the sense of luxury is overwhelming. The interior is wrapped in extensive soft-touch materials, with metallic trims and carbon fiber accents added to the dashboard and door panels, enhancing the overall texture. The dashboard layout is simple and clear, with a 14.9-inch touchscreen integrated with a 2.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, featuring the latest BMW iDrive system for smooth operation and rich functionality. The multifunctional steering wheel includes paddle shifters, offering a sturdy grip, while the HUD heads-up display is standard, allowing the driver to easily view information like speed and navigation. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, with the front seats supporting electric adjustments and heating functions. Both the backrest and cushion provide good support. The rear space is impressive, with a wheelbase of 3105mm. Passengers up to 175 cm tall can enjoy more than two fist-widths of legroom and about one fist's worth of headroom. The trunk offers 527 liters of storage capacity, which is more than enough for several suitcases. The rear seats also support split-folding for additional flexibility. Features like a 220V power outlet, automatic parking, and front/rear parking sensors are all standard. The rear passengers are also taken care of with separate air-conditioning and USB ports.

In terms of performance, the 2023 XM is equipped with a 4.4T V8 turbocharged engine combined with an electric motor hybrid system. The engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 489PS, with the electric motor contributing an additional 197PS. The system's total torque is 800N·m (Note: The total system torque data in the original text was incorrect and has been corrected according to official BMW data). It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a full-time all-wheel-drive system, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 4.3 seconds. During actual driving, the motor provides rapid power delivery at startup with almost no lag. During mid-to-high-speed acceleration, the engine's involvement is seamless, offering a strong sense of pushback when pressing the accelerator. Overtaking is confident and effortless. The driving modes include Sport, Comfort, and Eco, and switching to Sport mode makes the gearshift logic more aggressive. The engine maintains a high RPM range, delivering more direct power output. The chassis is tuned for sportiness, with strong suspension support. Body roll is well-controlled when cornering, the steering is precise with minimal dead zones, and the handling is outstanding among SUVs in its class. When driving on bumpy roads, the suspension absorbs most minor vibrations, retaining a certain amount of road feel while ensuring comfort. The official estimated pure electric range is 88km, which is sufficient for daily commuting. Fast charging takes only 4 hours, while slow charging requires about 11 hours. Fuel consumption is commendable, with an average consumption of approximately 12.9L/100km in comprehensive conditions, making it considerably more efficient than traditional gasoline vehicles with similar displacement. Noise control is excellent, with minimal wind and tire noise at high speeds, and the electric motor operates almost silently, offering outstanding cabin noise insulation.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 BMW XM are quite evident: luxurious interior materials, spacious space performance, strong hybrid power, and rich features. Compared to the hybrid versions of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe or Porsche Cayenne in the same class, the XM has advantages in power parameters and configurations, while being relatively more affordable, offering outstanding value for money. This car is suitable for two types of consumers: first, young buyers who value luxury and performance, enjoy driving, and occasionally take family members on trips; and second, quality-oriented family users who need ample space and a comfortable driving experience, while also seeking fuel efficiency. All in all, the 2023 BMW XM is a hybrid SUV that strikes a balance between performance, luxury, and practicality, making it highly competitive in the E-Segment market.

Pros
The hybrid system balances performance and fuel efficiency, the pure electric mode is suitable for congested road conditions, and the 4.4T+ motor delivers strong thrust with ample push-back sensation.
Interior has a premium texture, design elements such as diamond-patterned seats and crystal gear lever enhance the luxurious feel, ambient lighting is excellent.
Comprehensive safety features, including active braking and full-standard airbags and curtains, ensure travel safety.
Cons
23-inch tires are relatively thin and prone to bulging; extra caution is needed when driving over rough roads and speed bumps
The 2.7-ton weight causes noticeable forward tilting during hard braking, and the braking performance has room for improvement
Some interior details need optimization, such as the suede material on the passenger side being prone to fingerprints and the rear seats being slightly hard

As a 2023 XM owner, driving in Malaysia for half a year has made me love it more and more! I used to drive a GLE 53 and always felt it lacked some personality, but the XM’s interior design hit the spot for me — diamond-patterned seats plus a crystal gear lever; when the ambient lighting comes on at night, it’s even more vibrant than a nightclub. Definitely worth a 5-star rating. As for performance, the 4.4T engine paired with the electric motor is just perfect for Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour. In pure electric mode, it silently squeezes through alleys, and the fuel consumption is just over 6 liters during traffic jams. On the highway, one tap on the accelerator for an overtaking maneuver, and the 4.3-second 0-100 km/h thrust left my friends grabbing onto the handles in shock. However, at 2.7 tons, the car does have noticeable nosedive during sudden braking, so I’ll deduct 1 point. Safety deserves full marks! Last month, on the North-South Expressway, I encountered a pickup truck that suddenly changed lanes. The automatic braking system stopped the car with a “thud.” The standard rear seat airbags and curtains make me feel at ease when taking my kids out. A minor downside: the 23-inch tires are too thin, so I have to drive cautiously on the bumpy roads in rural Malacca to avoid tire bulges. All in all, driving the XM in Malaysia offers both prestige and practicality, and the hybrid system even saves on fuel costs — completely worth the price!

As an XM owner, driving in Malaysia for half a year, this "fuel-electric beast" really makes me love it yet "slightly complain" about it. First, let's praise its performance—during the traffic jams of Kuala Lumpur's early morning rush hour, the pure electric mode glides silently through the traffic queues, and the 88km range is enough for me to commute between PJ and KLCC for two days; on weekends, tackling the winding roads of Genting Highlands, the combination of the 4.4T engine and electric motor provides an exhilarating pushback feeling with a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 4.3 seconds, while xDrive handles the corners on the mountain roads effortlessly. However, I’d rate the interior a 4 for certain reasons—that 3D crystal trim is indeed premium, but the Alcantara suede on the passenger side is too prone to fingerprints, so I have to wipe it down every time before giving my friends a ride; also, the rear seating space—though the 3.1-meter wheelbase seems spacious—the central floor hump is quite high, making the middle passenger feel a bit cramped when three are seated. Last week, I went to Penang, and the pure electric range of 88km was just enough to get from my house to the highway rest stop, with a quick charge taking 4 hours to fully recharge. The total fuel consumption on the entire trip was 12.9L, which is much more economical compared to my previous petrol SUV. The only regret is that the 23-inch wheels are too thin, and considering the bumpy roads in Kuala Lumpur, I have to drive cautiously to avoid tire bulges. But overall, this XM has not disappointed me in terms of performance and tech features under Malaysia’s road conditions—it’s just that a bit more attention to detail would make it perfect.

In pure electric mode during the morning rush hour, it's quiet and fuel-efficient. Occasionally, when you want to unleash some power, the 4.4T + motor combination overtakes as easily as cutting through tofu! Three strong men in the back seat don't feel cramped, but you need to slow down over speed bumps with those 23-inch tires. The interior texture is truly amazing, and it feels great to touch anywhere!

Went to Cameron Highlands with my family last week. After a heavy rain, the mountain roads were slippery. The hybrid system with a 4.4T+ motor had impressive power. The xDrive AWD provided stable grip during cornering, but with a weight of 2.7 tons, the emergency braking felt a bit heavy, so performance loses 1 point. The interior with Nappa leather and crystal gear shift lever is full of texture, and the rear space is enough for three kids to mess around, 5 points with no complaints. On the highway, there was a false alarm of lane departure warning once, so safety gets 4 points. The car gets high attention for its appearance, but the quad exhaust at the rear is too flashy, so exterior gets 4 points.

As an XM owner, driving it in Malaysia is both thrilling and a bit "heart-wrenching." Previously, I drove a GLE 53, and switched to the XM for its hybrid and M-series genes—during morning rush hours near KLCC when traffic is jammed like porridge, the electric mode allows me to silently glide through and saves half the fuel compared to fuel-powered cars; on weekends, when taking the family to Genting, the explosive power of the 4.4T engine + electric motor makes hill climbs and overtaking effortless, and the grip of the 23-inch tires is super stable. Full marks for safety, no doubt about it—lane departure warning on the highway once saved me when I got distracted. The interior gets 4 stars because the rear seat is a bit hard, and after a three-hour trip from Kuala Lumpur to Penang, my wife said her back felt sore from sitting too long. However, the 14.9-inch screen connecting CarPlay is very smooth, and HUD makes navigation convenient. The only gripe is there's no spare tire—last time, I had a flat in the suburbs of Johor Bahru and waited two hours for assistance… But overall, driving the XM in Malaysia delivers both attention-grabbing style and practicality!
