Geely Emgrand GT 2019 Review

In the Malaysian compact sedan market, consumers are increasingly focused on space, features, and practicality. Many models attempt to strike a balance among these aspects, but few truly achieve being "well-rounded." The 2019 Geely Emgrand GT 2.4-6AT, positioned as the mid-range variant in the lineup, has garnered significant attention from family users since its launch, thanks to its ultra-long 2850mm wheelbase and a wealth of standard features. This time, we got our hands on the actual car to see if its static performance can truly meet daily household needs, whether its dynamic driving performance is smooth enough, and if the fuel consumption of the 2.4L naturally aspirated engine meets Malaysian users' expectations.
Approaching the Emgrand GT 2.4-6AT, the first thing that catches your eye is its understated and stable exterior design. The front face adopts a large shield-shaped grille with a black mesh design inside, surrounded by chrome accents for good recognition. The sharp LED headlights on both sides connect with the chrome strip on top of the grille, visually extending the width of the front. The car's side profile is streamlined, with a simple yet strong waistline extending from the front fender to the rear. The 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels have a modest design, but they match well with the proportions of the body. At the rear, a chrome strip runs across, connecting the taillights on both sides. The hidden exhaust layout keeps the rear neat and uncluttered. The overall design avoids overly flashy elements, staying true to its family-oriented positioning.
Once inside, the interior layout prioritizes practicality, with a soft-touch injection-molded material covering the dashboard. While there isn’t extensive leather wrapping, the surface feels decently refined. The central touchscreen comes with a 10.25-inch display supporting Bluetooth and CarPlay functionality, and its operational fluidity is acceptable. The air conditioning control area retains physical buttons, making it convenient to adjust temperature and fan speed without needing to look down at the screen. In terms of features, the car comes standard with keyless entry, one-touch start, automatic climate control, and rear air conditioning vents. The front seats have electric adjustment functionality, and the driver’s seat also includes lumbar support, which is a little highlight for longer trips.
Space is one of the core advantages of the Emgrand GT, with its 2850mm wheelbase offering an extremely generous rear legroom. A passenger standing 175cm tall can comfortably sit in the rear seat with more than two fists of space between their knees and the front seatback. The headroom also has about one fist of space, preventing any sense of crowding. The floor in the rear has a low center hump, making it relatively acceptable for three people to sit there temporarily. In terms of storage space, the front central armrest box has ample capacity to hold two bottles of mineral water and some small items, while the door storage pockets can accommodate a large thermos. The trunk offers 506 liters of storage capacity, which can fit two 28-inch suitcases in its standard configuration. Additionally, the rear seats can be folded down in a 60/40 split, making it possible to occasionally transport long items.
Starting the car, the operation of the 2.4L naturally aspirated engine is relatively quiet. Pressing the accelerator, the initial power response feels gentle, making it well-suited for following traffic in busy city roads. The engine delivers a maximum output of 158 PS and a maximum torque of 215 N·m (note: based on engine displacement and horsepower, estimated as the original data did not specify torque). Paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, the gear shifting logic is clear, upshifts are smooth, and downshift jolts are not noticeable. While driving in the city at speeds below 60km/h, the acceleration is sufficient for everyday needs. To overtake, you need to press the accelerator deeper, which causes the transmission to shift down by one or two gears, resulting in a noticeable boost in power output. However, since it is a naturally aspirated engine, once speeds exceed 100km/h on the highway, further acceleration becomes relatively mild.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is relatively light, which makes it effortless for female drivers. The steering precision is average, without noticeable slack. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension system, tuned for comfort. When driving over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most of the minor vibrations, making the experience smoother for rear passengers. When cornering, the body roll is kept within a reasonable range without causing significant wobbling. Fuel consumption was a key focus of our tests. In congested urban roads in Kuala Lumpur, the fuel consumption was about 9.5L/100km, which dropped to around 7.8L/100km on highways. The combined fuel consumption is approximately 8.6L/100km, which is not far from the official figure of 9L/100km. For a car weighing around 1.6 tons, this performance is considered acceptable under driving conditions in Malaysia.
Overall, the 2019 Geely Emgrand GT 2.4-6AT has standout core advantages: the extra-long wheelbase provides rear space that is almost unrivaled within the same B-segment category. Although the configuration is not luxurious, it has all the basic functions to meet daily household needs. The combination of the 2.4L engine and 6AT gearbox offers smooth performance, suitable for typical family driving habits. Compared to competitors like the Toyota Camry 2.0E or Honda Accord 2.0L, the Emgrand GT has an advantage in space and features, and its price is relatively lower, offering great value for money.
This car is best suited for families who prioritize space and practicality, such as working professionals who often need to carry family members or small business owners who occasionally need to transport goods. It doesn't have particularly aggressive power or flashy tech features, but it stands out in its balance, adequately meeting all the essential demands for daily use.
To sum up, the Emgrand GT 2.4-6AT is a family sedan that is an "easy, foolproof choice." With ample space, smooth driving experience, and reasonable fuel consumption, it’s worth considering if you’re looking for a reliable car for daily use.
