Geely Emgrand X7 Sport 2019 Review

In Malaysia's compact SUV market, family users prioritize space practicality, fuel efficiency, and basic configurations. Many brands have launched models focused on balance in this segment. The 2019 Geely Emgrand X7 Sport 2.0L+6MT, as the entry-level version in the series, targets the market with its combination of a 139PS naturally aspirated engine and a manual transmission, emphasizing "high cost performance + adequate power." This time, we will conduct a test drive to see if it meets the core needs of daily home use.
At first glance, the design of this car takes a steady and dignified route, without overly aggressive lines. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with horizontally arranged chrome strips inside, paired with sharp halogen headlights on both sides, creating a decent level of recognition. The side profile is characterized by relatively straight lines, with a waistline that extends from the front fender to the rear, adding some style to the otherwise simple side design. The 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels are reasonably sized, in line with its entry-level positioning. At the rear, the taillights are laid out horizontally, connected with a slim chrome strip, while the lower bumper features black plastic cladding, adding a slightly rugged SUV touch. As for the lighting system, aside from the halogen headlights, front and rear fog lights are also equipped, adequately meeting basic nighttime driving lighting needs.
When seated inside, the interior design is practical, with a symmetrical layout for the center console. It is covered with soft-touch plastic material on the upper part, which feels better than hard plastic. The central area is accented with silver trim, creating an overall texture that is average for vehicles in this price range. The 8-inch center screen supports Bluetooth connection and basic multimedia functions. Its operation speed is satisfactory, but the lack of CarPlay or Android Auto is somewhat disappointing. The air conditioning control retains physical buttons, and the knobs and buttons have a moderate level of resistance, making blind operation relatively convenient. The seats are wrapped in fabric materials, with manual adjustment available for the front seats. The cushions and backrests are adequately padded, offering good comfort for long periods of sitting.
In terms of space, the car measures 4,519mm in length, 1,831mm in width, and 1,694mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,670mm, which is standard for compact SUVs. When sitting in the front row, with a 175cm tall user adjusting the seat, there is a two-finger gap of headroom. The rear legroom provides about two fists of space, with one fist headroom. Even with three adults seated in the back, it doesn't feel overly cramped. For storage, the front door pockets can hold two bottles of mineral water, while the center console storage box is moderately sized and can fit small items. The rear door pockets also feature storage spaces, and the central tunnel has a slight protrusion that doesn't impact the middle passenger's foot placement. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 320L, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats, making it easy to fit strollers or suitcases for larger items.
As for performance, the car is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine that delivers a maximum power of 139PS and a maximum torque of 180N·m, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. In actual driving, the power output is relatively smooth during the start, requiring the RPM to be raised above 2500rpm for noticeable power. In daily city driving, the gear shifting is smooth, and the clutch biting point is clear, making it easy for beginners to handle. During acceleration, the official 0 to 100 km/h time is 11.78 seconds. This result is not particularly fast, but it is entirely sufficient for daily commuting and family use. When overtaking, it's necessary to downshift and increase the RPM in advance for a more immediate power response.
In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel has moderate steering effort with relatively precise directionality and no significant play. The chassis uses a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, with a tuning bias towards comfort. When going over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most small vibrations, and the body movement is minimal. When cornering, the body's roll is kept within acceptable limits, without giving a loose feeling. In terms of braking, both the front and rear are equipped with ventilated disc brakes. The brake pedal feel is linear, and the braking force is moderate, providing sufficient confidence for everyday driving.
Fuel consumption is an aspect that family users are particularly concerned about. We drove 50 km each on urban roads and highways, with a combined fuel consumption of 8.5L/100km, slightly higher than the official 8.1L/100km. However, considering actual driving conditions and driving habits, this fuel consumption level is within the normal range for naturally aspirated vehicles in the same class. In terms of noise control, when driving at speeds below 60 km/h, the cabin is relatively quiet, with wind and tire noise not being noticeable. When the speed exceeds 80 km/h, wind noise gradually increases but does not affect normal conversations.
To summarize, the 2019 Geely Emgrand X7 Sport 2.0L+6MT's core advantages lie in its balanced space performance, comfortable chassis tuning, and budget-friendly price positioning. Compared to other vehicles in the same class, such as the entry-level version of the Proton X70, its price may be more competitive, though it is slightly inferior in terms of configuration and performance. This car is more suitable for family users who prioritize practicality and fuel economy, especially those with a limited budget and need a compact SUV for daily commuting and family outings. If you do not have high demands for power and do not mind a manual transmission, then this car would be a good choice.
