Recently, the D-Segment SUV market has seen an increasing number of options. Many family buyers are looking for models with spacious interiors, comprehensive configurations, and reasonable pricing. The 2025 Jaecoo J8 FWD version has just been launched at a price of RM178,800, directly targeting mid-size SUV buyers who value cost-effectiveness. Its key features include a high-power 2.0T engine, intelligent safety features as standard, and a nearly 5-meter body length. In this test drive, we mainly want to see whether its dynamic performance as a two-wheel-drive version can meet the needs of daily family use while its configurations and space can compete with more expensive rivals.

Starting with the exterior, the J8 FWD adopts a rugged design, with relatively straight lines throughout. The front features a large vertical waterfall grille, paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides, giving it high recognizability. The side profile has a waistline that runs from the front to the rear, with 20-inch wheels and 245/50 R20 tires making the side view look balanced. At the rear, the LED light strip design, currently a popular trend, is clear when lit, while the silver skid plate on the lower bumper adds a touch of off-road flair. The overall exterior is not overly flashy and has a timeless appeal, suitable for the aesthetic preferences of family users.

Stepping inside, the first thing that catches the eye is the dual-screen setup comprising a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch center display. The screens have good resolution and operate smoothly. The interior materials primarily feature soft plastic and leather finishes, providing a decent tactile experience. The multifunctional steering wheel comes with paddle shifters and supports manual adjustment, although having electric adjustment would have been more convenient. The front seats are electrically adjustable, offering good support for the backrest and cushion, which helps prevent fatigue during long drives. The rear seat space is a highlight of the J8. With a 2820mm wheelbase, a passenger measuring 1.8 meters tall would have over two fist-widths of legroom and about one fist of headroom. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split and reclined, and when folded down, the trunk space expands significantly, making it easy to accommodate strollers or suitcases. In terms of storage, door pockets can hold two bottles of water, the center armrest box is sufficiently deep, and there is wireless charging and USB ports in the front. The rear also comes with independent air conditioning vents and power outlets, which adds to its practicality.

In terms of performance, the J8 FWD is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 249PS and a peak torque of 385N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The throttle response at start-up is quite linear, without any abrupt jerking, which is ideal for urban driving. With a deeper press on the accelerator, the engine reaches its peak torque at 1750 RPM, providing a noticeable acceleration feeling and instilling confidence when overtaking. The 8-speed automatic transmission has a clear shifting logic and performs smoothly, with minimal gear shift jerks during normal driving. We tested its 0-100km/h acceleration, achieving around 9 seconds, which is consistent with the official data. This performance ranks it slightly above average among front-wheel-drive vehicles in this class.

As for handling and suspension performance, the front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension are tuned for comfort. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension absorbs most of the bumps, ensuring rear passengers don’t feel too much jolting. The steering wheel has a moderate weight with minimal dead spots, making daily driving relatively easy. On the highway, the vehicle exhibits good stability and does not feel shaky even at 120km/h. However, when taking sharp turns, the large body size results in noticeable body roll, but this is expected as it’s a family SUV, so sports car-like handling is not within its design intent.

In terms of fuel consumption, we drove half of the journey in the city and the other half on highways. The combined fuel consumption is approximately 10.5L/100km, which is acceptable considering the 2.0T engine displacement and the vehicle weight of nearly 2 tons. Regarding noise control, there is minor tire noise and wind noise when driving on the highway, but it’s within an acceptable range and does not affect normal conversations among passengers inside the car.

Safety features are one of the highlights of the J8 FWD. It comes standard with 6 airbags, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, lane change assist, ACC adaptive cruise control, and more. These features are quite comprehensive compared to other models in the same price range, providing families with a strong sense of security. The 360-degree panoramic camera has good clarity, and along with front and rear parking sensors, it makes parking very convenient.

To summarize, the core strengths of the 2025 Jaecoo J8 FWD lie in its spacious interior, abundant features, and relatively reasonable price. Compared to other models of the same class, its configuration level is close to some more expensive all-wheel-drive versions, but its price is about 20,000 MYR cheaper, offering great value for money. It is suitable for families needing a spacious vehicle, prioritizing safety features, but without a rigid requirement for all-wheel drive. If you are a family of three or often travel with elderly or children, the J8 FWD is a good choice that meets the needs of daily commuting, weekend outings, and various other scenarios.

Previously, I drove a Japanese SUV, but I switched to the J8 mainly for its 2.0T engine and spacious interior. During the morning rush hour crawling on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the ACC follow function works steadily, and the 360-degree camera makes navigating narrow roads less stressful. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the 385N·m torque performs well on climbs, the 8AT shifts smoothly, and folding down the rear seats can accommodate a child's bicycle. The safety features are comprehensive – 6 airbags and active braking give my wife peace of mind. A small drawback is that the panoramic sunroof cannot be opened, making it a bit stuffy on hot days, but the sunshade helps alleviate this. For around 170,000 MYR, getting a D-segment car offers exceptional value in the Malaysian market.

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we entered the winding mountain road, a sudden rain started. The 2.0T turbocharged engine's 385Nm torque, unleashed at 1750rpm, made climbing and overtaking effortless. The 8-speed automatic transmission shifted so smoothly it felt almost non-existent. The wide body and LED lights stood out brightly in the rain and fog, catching extra glances from roadside vendors. While cornering, the ESP held the car steadily, though the active braking system misfired once on a slippery road, giving me quite a scare — it would be perfect if the sensitivity could be adjusted.

Previously, I owned a Japanese SUV, but its space and features always fell short. Switching to the Jaecoo J8 AWD was purely because its imposing appearance caught my attention — the 4820mm length paired with 20-inch wheels make it a head-turner on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. A full 5 stars for the exterior, no doubt! The interior with dual 12.3-inch screens feels high-tech, but the co-pilot storage compartment is a bit shallow, so I deduct 1 point. During the morning rush hour on LDP highway, the ACC kept a stable following distance, and the 2.0T+8AT powertrain delivered instant power on demand, making overtaking smooth and effortless. On the weekend, I drove the whole family to Genting Highlands; the AWD handled the mountain road climbs without slipping, and the ventilated and massaging second-row captain seats kept both the elderly and children comfortable. A minor drawback is that the panoramic sunroof cannot be opened, but the sunshade is sufficient. For 198,800 MYR, you get 6 seats, 10 airbags, and AWD — much more value compared to competitors in the same class!

Overtaking in urban areas is smooth with just a touch of the gas! Even during high-speed cornering, it stays stable. This performance was definitely worth the wait~

During the morning rush hour traffic jam, seat ventilation + massage saved my back! The 2.0T turbocharger kicks in quickly, overtaking slow-moving vehicles is effortless. The 6-seater layout is fantastic; on weekends, I can take my parents and kids camping, and with the third row folded down, there’s still space for a folding bike~just that the panoramic sunroof sunshade needs to be pulled manually, a small flaw but it doesn't detract from the overall excellence!
