Lexus RZ Review

In the increasingly competitive D-Segment electric vehicle market in Malaysia, family users and quality-conscious consumers are starting to turn toward "balance" — requiring enough space to meet daily travel needs without sacrificing luxury features and driving quality. As a luxury brand, Lexus's 2024 RZ 450e Luxury, with its key selling points such as the "DIRECT4" all-wheel-drive system and Mark Levinson audio system, has become a focal point for many. The core purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this car can achieve the perfect balance between range, driving experience, and luxury, while meeting the practical needs of local users.
From afar, the overall style of the 2024 RZ 450e Luxury continues Lexus's family design language, but leans towards simplicity and smoothness. The spindle-shaped front grille has been adjusted for electrification, featuring a closed design with chrome trims that both maintain its recognizability and meet the aerodynamic requirements of an electric vehicle. The body lines stretch smoothly from the hood to the rear, with simple and clean side waistlines. The 20-inch wheels are dynamic in design and well-proportioned with the body. At the rear, the through-type LED taillights are a highlight of the design; when lit, they extend the visual width, and the dot-matrix structure inside the taillights enhances recognition during nighttime. The lighting system comes standard with LED lights, and automatic headlights and front fog lights prove highly practical in Malaysia’s frequently rainy and foggy weather.
Inside the car, the luxurious feel is mainly reflected in its materials and details. The center console is wrapped in soft leather, while the addition of wood-grain trim enhances the texture. The touch controls are responsive and not sluggish. In terms of core configurations, the 14-inch EMV central control screen serves as the visual centerpiece. Its system interface is smooth and supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, providing intuitive daily operation. The instrument panel is a 7-inch digital screen paired with a TFT display, clearly showing information such as range, speed, and driver assistance. The front seats support electric adjustment, offering moderate support and remaining comfortable even during long rides. In terms of space, the car measures 4805mm in length, 1895mm in width, and 1635mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2850mm. Rear legroom allows for two fists' worth of space for passengers 175cm tall, and headroom is ample as well. The trunk offers sufficient storage capacity, which can be expanded to 1451L by folding the rear seats down, meeting the needs of family cargo. The air conditioning system is a tri-zone automatic climate control, with independent air vents and power outlets for the rear seats, showing thoughtful attention to details.
In terms of performance, the 2024 RZ 450e Luxury is equipped with front and rear dual permanent magnet synchronous motors with a combined output of 230kW (313PS) and an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.3 seconds. During actual driving, switching to Sport mode provides a rapid response at startup, with linear and powerful acceleration. Pressing the accelerator hard during overtaking yields a noticeable thrust, while in Eco mode, power output is softer, making it suitable for daily commutes. The performance of the DIRECT4 all-wheel-drive system is worth mentioning, as it quickly distributes power on slippery roads or when cornering, ensuring excellent vehicle stability. The suspension adopts a front MacPherson strut and rear double-wishbone independent setup, which is tuned for comfort. It effectively filters out bumps and vibrations when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, providing a smooth ride. Body roll is well-controlled during cornering, maintaining stable vehicle postures. The steering wheel is precise, with minimal play, offering agile handling.
Range and energy consumption are the points that concern electric vehicle users the most. The official all-electric range is 440 km. In our mixed driving condition test (50% city and 50% highway), with the air conditioning set to 24°C and regenerative braking set to medium, the final range attainment rate was approximately 85%. At a constant speed of 110 km/h on the highway, the energy consumption was about 18kWh/100km, while in urban conditions it was around 15kWh/100km, which meets expectations. As for charging, fast charging takes 0.5 hours to go from 30% to 80%, and slow charging takes 6.5 hours to fully charge, which is sufficient for daily energy replenishment needs. Regarding driving and riding comfort, the car's noise control for wind and road noise is commendable, and the interior remains quiet even when driving at 120 km/h on the highway. The Mark Levinson 13-speaker audio system delivers clear sound quality and deep bass, enhancing the driving experience. Moreover, the seats have good breathability, ensuring comfort without stuffiness during long rides.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2024 RZ 450e Luxury lies in its balance: luxurious interior configuration, stable driving experience, reliable range performance, and the quality assurance of the Lexus brand. Compared to the Tesla Model Y Performance in the same class, the RZ 450e Luxury excels in quietness and interior quality, and features like the Mark Levinson sound system and 3-zone air conditioning are absent in the latter. When compared to the Volvo C40 Recharge, its range attainment rate and space performance stand out. This car is suitable for families who value luxury and driving stability or young professionals who pursue quality. Whether for daily commutes or weekend family outings, it can handle trips with ease.
In conclusion, the 2024 Lexus RZ 450e Luxury is not a model that wins with a single standout feature, but rather a "versatile performer" that meets user needs in every aspect. If you are looking for an electric SUV that balances luxury, practicality, and driving quality, it is an option worth considering.
