The 2026 Lexus RZ public is the core model that Lexus has introduced in the luxury compact electric SUV market. Its design concept is derived from the Toyota bZ4X but completely separates itself in brand positioning, targeting competitors like the BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz EQA. The core selling points of this model lie in its unique Steer by Wire system and Lexus's signature quiet tuning, while retaining the brand's consistent luxurious feel. The purpose of this test drive is to evaluate its driving performance, range, and luxury features under real road conditions to see if they align with its brand positioning.

From an exterior perspective, the overall style of the 2026 Lexus RZ public continues Lexus's aggressive design language. The front features a closed spindle grille surrounded by sharp LED daytime running lights integrated with the headlamp assembly, offering high recognizability. The side profile has smooth lines, with the waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, paired with 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels to create a sporty appearance. At the rear, the simple design includes through-type taillights, aerodynamic air ducts on both sides, and a hidden exhaust layout (as it is an electric vehicle), creating a coordinated and high-tech visual aesthetic.

Inside the vehicle, the interior style emphasizes simplicity while paying attention to detailed textures. The dashboard has an asymmetrical design tilted towards the driver for ease of operation. The upper portion of the dashboard is covered in soft leather-like material, complemented by wood grain and metal trim, enhancing the luxury feel. A 14-inch touch-sensitive center console screen is centrally mounted on the dashboard, equipped with Lexus's latest intelligent connectivity system, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, with the front seats offering electric adjustment and heating features. The backrests provide excellent support, ensuring comfort during long-distance driving.

In terms of space, the 2026 Lexus RZ public has overall body dimensions of length 4805 mm, width 1895 mm, and height 1635 mm, with a wheelbase of 2850 mm. The front-row seating space is roomy, offering approximately a fist and two fingers of headroom for the driver and ample legroom. The rear-row space is equally impressive; a 175 cm passenger can enjoy two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. The middle floor is almost completely flat, making it comfortable for three passengers without feeling cramped. Regarding storage, the trunk has a standard volume of 522 liters, which can expand to 1451 liters when the rear seats are folded down, meeting the needs of daily family use. Additionally, the cabin offers multiple storage compartments, such as the central armrest box and door panel storage slots, convenient for storing small items.

As for the powertrain, the 2026 Lexus RZ public is equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, with the front motor offering a maximum power output of 150 kW and the rear motor delivering 80 kW, resulting in a combined maximum system power of 230 kW and a peak torque of 435 N·m. It is paired with a 71.4 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, providing a CLTC range of 520 km. The driving modes include Eco, Normal, and Sport, each offering significantly different power responses. In Normal mode, the vehicle has a smooth and quick start, with linear acceleration, allowing it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.6 seconds. In Sport mode, power output becomes more aggressive, offering a strong sense of pushback during hard acceleration and confidence during overtaking.

In terms of handling performance, the steer-by-wire system is a major highlight of the 2026 Lexus RZ public. This system eliminates the traditional mechanical connection, making steering response more direct, with the steering wheel requiring only a 150-degree rotation, which is extremely convenient for U-turns or parking on narrow city streets. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, with tuning leaning towards comfort, effectively filtering road bumps. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, and the suspension provides adequate support, offering a stable driving experience.

In terms of range, this test drive covered approximately 100km each on city roads and highways, with an average energy consumption of 18.5kWh/100km. Based on the CLTC standard range of 520km, the actual range achievement rate is approximately 85%. In fast charging mode, the battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes, while slow charging mode takes 6.5 hours. Noise control performance is excellent, and wind and tire noise are effectively isolated during high-speed driving, providing interior quietness comparable to the Lexus ES series.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2026 Lexus RZ public lie in its unique steer-by-wire system, excellent luxury quality, and reliable range capability. Compared to other vehicles in the same class, it offers more competitive technological features and driving experience. While the price may be slightly higher than competitors, it boasts outstanding comprehensive value for money. This model is suitable for consumers who prioritize driving experience and luxury quality, especially those looking to transition from fuel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles.

Lastly, it should be noted that the dynamic performance and interior luxury of the Lexus RZ public have reached or even surpassed those of some luxury brand models in the same class. For consumers who pursue quality and do not blindly follow the emerging brands, this vehicle is undoubtedly a worthwhile option. It not only represents Lexus's achievements in the field of electrification but also serves as a high-quality electric SUV that can meet daily use needs.

Pros
Eye-catching design, spindle grille and floating roof/backline have high head-turning rate
Good stability during cornering and driving on rainy days, strong sense of security on waterlogged roads
Smooth city commuting, single-pedal mode follows smoothly, and the motor responds quickly
Cons
When climbing uphill, pressing the accelerator deeply lacks power, with weak follow-through, not as effortless as a fuel car.
Central control screen/system occasionally lags, the screen froze before when charging at a highway service area.
Rear air conditioning has weak airflow, children complain of feeling hot when seated.

Last week, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after leaving KLCC, we were stuck in traffic for 40 minutes. The spindle grille and floating roofline of this RZ certainly stand out in traffic, attracting a lot of attention, but stepping on the pedal hard during uphill climbs feels a bit weak, not as responsive as a petrol car. However, the car body remains stable when cornering, and there was no skidding on wet roads in the rain. The only issue is that the rear air conditioning has weak airflow, and my kid complained about the heat. At the highway service area, we waited half an hour for charging, and the screen froze twice, which shouldn’t happen at this price range.

Recently driving the 2026 Lexus RZ for public commuting, overtaking during the morning rush hour is sharp and smooth, the steering wheel has just the right weight, and the cornering is very stable. The rear row fits three friends comfortably without feeling cramped, and the air conditioning cools quickly. Even after being exposed to the sun, it cools down inside the car very fast. The only minor regret is that the central control screen occasionally responds with a slight delay.

Previously, I had the fuel version of the NX, but switching to the 2026 RZ Public was really because of its stunning appearance — spindle grille combined with the fastback lines, it drew tons of attention on the coastal road of Penang. Giving the exterior a solid 5 out of 5 is well-deserved! Performance gets 4 points, mainly because it's sufficient for city use: during the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the single-pedal mode made following cars super smooth, and the motor's response was much faster than the NX. However, last week I drove up Genting Highlands and found that when stepping on the accelerator hard while climbing, it felt a bit weak and not as effortless as a fuel car. A minor gripe is that the car's infotainment system occasionally lags, though once CarPlay is connected, it becomes negligible. Over the weekend, I took my family to Malacca. The rear seat space was spacious enough for three adults, but after fitting two 28-inch suitcases in the trunk, the baby stroller had to be placed sideways, which was a slight inconvenience.

Every time I drive this RZ through waterlogged roads on rainy days, it feels so stable as if it's welded to the ground, fully maximizing the sense of security!

During rush hour traffic jams, the smooth acceleration of this RZ really saved my bad temper—when overtaking, a deep press on the throttle brings instant thrust without any delay. The exterior design is highly attention-grabbing, but the safety features lack active braking. I hope this can be added in the next update.
