Mazda 3 Sedan 2004 Review

In recent years, competition in Malaysia's compact sedan market has become increasingly fierce. When making a choice, consumers now not only value basic transportation functions but also place increasing emphasis on design aesthetics, space practicality, and driving quality. As an important product for Mazda in this segment, the 2004 Mazda3 Sedan public has drawn the attention of many young families and driving enthusiasts with its unique sporty design and balanced product strength since its debut. This time, we took the vehicle for a comprehensive test to see if it could meet the needs of local users in terms of static performance, dynamic driving, and daily practicality.
In terms of exterior design, the 2004 Mazda3 Sedan public carries over the brand's iconic "Zoom-Zoom" design language, with an overall style that leans towards youthful sportiness. The front features a large trapezoidal grille with chrome trim, creating a strong visual impact. The sharp almond-shaped headlights integrate seamlessly with the grille lines, enhancing the front's cohesiveness. The side profile showcases sleek lines, with the waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, outlining a streamlined body proportion. The 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, though not very large in size, match well with the vehicle's style. At the rear, the simple design incorporates a slightly raised ducktail spoiler to enhance the sporty feel. The horizontally laid-out taillights feature a clear internal structure, offering good recognition when illuminated at night.
Sitting inside the car, the first impression is that the interior layout is relatively orderly, with the center console designed to lean slightly towards the driver for easier daily operation. The interior materials mainly consist of hard plastics, but key areas like the door armrests and seats are wrapped in fabric, providing a relatively comfortable touch. The center console is equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen display that supports Bluetooth connectivity and basic multimedia functions. The operating logic is straightforward, and the response speed is average. The air conditioning controls retain physical buttons; the knob and button resistance are moderate, making blind operation more convenient. In terms of features, this model comes standard with a multifunction steering wheel, manual air conditioning, front and rear power windows, and rear parking sensors. Although it lacks flashy functions, the basic configuration meets daily usage needs.
Regarding space performance, the 2004 Mazda3 Sedan public measures 4539mm×1755mm×1465mm, with a wheelbase of 2640mm, which places it at mainstream levels for compact sedans. The front-row seating offers ample space; for a 175cm tall individual adjusting the seat, there is still a fist's worth of headroom and sufficient legroom. The rear seating is generally adequate for family use, with the same-height individual having about four fingers of headroom and a fist and two fingers of legroom. However, the slight floor hump in the middle can make extended periods of sitting in the middle seat somewhat uncomfortable. In terms of storage capacity, the trunk offers 350 liters of volume, capable of holding two 20-inch suitcases. The rear seats support a split-folding feature, which can expand storage space to accommodate the occasional transport of large items. The number of storage compartments in the cabin is moderate; door pockets, the central armrest console, and the front cup holders can accommodate everyday small items.
In terms of power, this car is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 85kW (115PS) and a maximum torque of 148N·m, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. In actual driving, the power output is smooth, with a responsive throttle during the start, and sufficient power for daily commuting at low speeds. During acceleration, the engine's power significantly increases after 3000 RPM. When overtaking, you need to press the accelerator deeply. The gear shifts are clear, providing a strong sense of engagement. However, at high speeds, the engine's RPM can be quite high, leading to increased noise. In terms of driving modes, the vehicle offers two options: economy and sport. In economy mode, throttle response is slightly slower, suitable for daily commuting, while in sport mode, power output is more direct, suitable for occasionally enjoying the driving experience.
Regarding handling and chassis performance, the Mazda3 Sedan Public has a precise steering feel with minimal slack and clear directional feedback, making it quite nimble during daily driving. The suspension system consists of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards sportiness. The vehicle maintains good body roll control during cornering and delivers excellent stability. When tackling bumpy roads, the suspension can filter out most of the small vibrations, but larger potholes can result in noticeable jolts for rear-seat passengers. The braking system is stable in performance, with a moderately long brake pedal travel and a linear braking force output, ensuring sufficient confidence during daily driving.
In terms of fuel consumption, we conducted an actual test. On urban roads, the fuel consumption per 100 kilometers was approximately 7.5L, while on highways, it was about 6.2L per 100 kilometers. The combined fuel consumption was around 6.8L. For a car equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine, this fuel efficiency is considered average, meeting the fuel economy expectations of family users.
When it comes to driving comfort, the vehicle's noise control is average. At high speeds, wind and tire noise become more noticeable, and engine noise also enters the cabin when the RPM exceeds 3000, slightly impacting the passenger experience. The seats provide decent support, and the breathable fabric material ensures comfort even during long rides without causing significant fatigue. The manual air conditioning system has moderate cooling performance and requires some time to reach the desired temperature in hot weather.
In summary, the 2004 Mazda3 Sedan Public is a well-balanced compact car. Its key highlights include sporty design, good handling performance, and practical space usability. Compared to cars in the same segment, it stands out in terms of handling, making it suitable for driving enthusiasts. However, it falls slightly short in terms of features and technological enhancements. Overall, this car delivers balanced performance and is suitable for families prioritizing driving experience and practicality, particularly those on a budget seeking a fun-to-drive sedan. If you need a car for daily commuting and occasional driving enjoyment, the 2004 Mazda3 Sedan Public is a worthy option to consider.
