User Review

In the compact sedan market in Malaysia, the 2014 Mazda 3 Sedan Public, with its combination of the Kodo design language and SkyActiv technology, was once the focus of attention for many users who value driving quality and design. Positioned as a model for household use and young consumers, its core strengths lie in its distinctive design, balanced performance and handling, and practical space performance. This review will comprehensively analyze whether this car can still meet the needs of today's users and its competitiveness in the used car market, from static experience to dynamic driving.

In terms of exterior design, the 2014 Mazda 3 Sedan Public adopts the brand's signature Kodo design language, featuring smooth and dynamic overall lines. At the front, the large shield-shaped grille, combined with chrome trim and sharp eagle-eye headlights, creates a striking visual impact that still holds up today. Along the sides, a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear traverses the entire body, giving the sedan a sporty, coupe-like appearance with its slightly slanted stance. At the rear, the design is simple, with L-shaped tail lights echoing the headlights. When illuminated, their distinctiveness is high, and the small spoiler on the trunk lid adds a touch of sportiness. Notably, the texture of the car's paint is well-regarded for its class, and with proper maintenance, it still retains a good gloss even after many years of use.

Inside, the interior design leans toward the driver’s side, with the center console arranged asymmetrically for ease of operation. In terms of materials, the upper part of the dashboard is covered with soft-touch materials, although there is still a considerable proportion of hard plastics. However, the seams are neatly finished, and the overall texture aligns with the standards of joint-venture models of its era. In terms of features, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes standard, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and multimedia playback. However, the touchscreen's responsiveness and interface smoothness are slightly lacking compared to modern vehicles. The seats are fabric upholstered, offering decent support and comfort. The driver's seat is manually adjustable, and the passenger seat is completely manual. The instrument cluster features traditional mechanical dials with a central small-sized trip computer display that clearly shows essential information such as speed, RPM, and fuel consumption. As for storage spaces, the front door pockets, center armrest storage, and glovebox are all quite practical. Additionally, the rear row comes equipped with a central armrest and cup holders, meeting daily household needs.

In terms of space, the 2014 Mazda 3 Sedan Public has dimensions of 4580mm×1795mm×1450mm, with a wheelbase of 2700mm, which is standard for a compact sedan. The front row offers ample room, with a passenger height of 175cm still having about a fist of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear row space is average; a passenger of the same height sitting in the back has about two fists of legroom, but headroom is slightly cramped with only about three fingers of space, which might feel a bit constraining during long rides. The trunk capacity is 419L, with a large opening and a regular shape, capable of accommodating two 20-inch suitcases and some small items, thus meeting daily household and short trip needs.

In terms of power, it is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, with a maximum power of 114 horsepower (84kW) and a maximum torque of 148N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic-manual transmission. During actual driving, the power output in the initial stage is smooth, and the torque performance at low RPM is sufficient to handle urban road conditions. However, the acceleration lacks explosive power, requiring deep stepping on the accelerator to achieve a more noticeable power response. When switched to manual mode, the shift logic of the transmission is clear, providing a certain level of driving pleasure. Regarding driving modes, only the normal mode is available, with no options to switch to sport or eco modes.

Handling and chassis performance have traditionally been Mazda 3's strong points. The steering wheel offers precise steering with minimal slack, clear directionality, and provides drivers with excellent handling confidence. The chassis uses front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, with tuning leaning towards a sporty feel. Body roll is well-controlled when cornering, maintaining stable vehicle posture. However, the relatively stiff suspension tuning struggles to smooth out bumps, meaning minor road vibrations are quite noticeable inside the cabin, somewhat compromising comfort.

For specific performance testing, being a fuel-powered vehicle, the focus was on fuel consumption performance. In congested urban traffic conditions, the fuel consumption is about 8-9 liters per 100 kilometers; on highways, it drops to 6-7 liters per 100 kilometers, with an average combined consumption of approximately 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers. This performance is moderate and aligns with the standard for 1.5L naturally aspirated engines. Regarding braking performance, the brake pedal feedback is linear, and the braking force output is stable, with a stopping distance of about 40 meters from 100 km/h. This falls within the normal range for vehicles in the same class.

As for driving comfort, the soundproofing is average, with wind noise and tire noise being quite noticeable at high speeds. Tire noise, in particular, significantly impacts interior quietness. The seats provide adequate comfort and good support, though prolonged sitting may cause some fatigue in the lumbar area. The transmission's shifting smoothness is commendable, with almost no perceivable jerks during daily driving.

In summary, the core highlights of the 2014 Mazda 3 Sedan Public lie in its distinctive KODO design, balanced power and handling, as well as its practical space performance. Although its configuration and sense of technology may seem lacking compared to newer models, it offers a clear value advantage in the used car market. Compared to other vehicles in the same class, such as the Toyota Corolla Altis, the Mazda 3 stands out in handling performance; compared to the Honda Civic, its space performance is slightly inferior but its design is more impressive. This car is suitable for young users who focus on driving quality and design aesthetics or as a second car for families, fulfilling the needs of daily commuting and short-distance trips. If you don’t have high requirements for configuration and technology and value vehicle reliability and handling, then the 2014 Mazda 3 Sedan Public remains a worthwhile option to consider.

Last week, I took my wife and kids to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after passing the toll station, we encountered a heavy downpour. The front windshield wipers were sweeping crazily, yet the visibility remained clear — the penetrating power of these headlights is impressive. Combined with the vehicle stability system that firmly grips the slippery road surface, there was no floating sensation at all when cornering. Full marks for safety, absolutely deserved. When parked on the muddy ground beside the orchard, some tourists turned to look at my car. The Soul Red looked particularly striking in the rain and mist, and the exterior design is truly top-notch. However, my son, who was sitting in the back seat, complained that the air conditioning vent blowing toward his feet was a bit cold. If the interior had more air outlets with adjustable directions, it would be better. Deduct one point for that.

Previously, I was driving the old Vios, and its power felt as weak as stepping on cotton. After switching to the 2014 Mazda3 Sedan, I finally regained the driving experience! The 1.5L Skyactiv-G is super agile during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour traffic, and just a light press on the accelerator gets it moving. The fuel consumption is even lower than the Vios (7.2L/100km in the city). Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the transmission shifted smoothly during uphill drives. My parents in the backseat said it felt much more stable than the old car. The interior is truly stunning, with red and black stitched seats and a sporty instrument panel that feels more premium than the Civic of the same price range. The safety features are good too, with 6 airbags and ESP. Last time, during a rainy day on the North-South Expressway, I braked hard and there was no skidding. A minor drawback is that the hump in the middle of the rear seat is a bit high, so it's cramped for three people. Also, the tire noise is noticeable at high speeds, and you have to turn up the music to drown it out. But overall, it’s worth it – excellent looks and performance. The car gets a lot of attention driving around Malaysia!

The old Vios I had before felt like a "tin can." It wasn't until I switched to the 2014 Mazda3 that I felt like I had reached the "threshold of a good car"—the soft-touch interior feels premium, and the position of the central control screen is just right. It's far better than my friend's Almera, which feels overly plastic. Definitely worth a 5 out of 5. In terms of performance, it's very agile during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine doesn't feel sluggish at takeoff, and it weaves through traffic more effortlessly than the Camry. However, when overtaking trucks on the highway, the accelerator pedal needs to be pressed harder, so 1 point off for that. Safety really gives peace of mind. Last year, I was rear-ended on the North-South Expressway—the rear bumper got dented, but the chassis wasn't deformed, and the airbags didn't mistakenly deploy. A well-deserved 5 out of 5 for safety. A small downside is the rear air conditioning vent, which is quite small. When taking my family on long trips to Ipoh, my mom, who sat in the back, often said it felt "a bit stuffy." But overall, it's a minor flaw. This car is entirely sufficient for daily commuting and weekend trips!
