Mercedes-Benz E-Class 2019 Review

In the Executive sedan market, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has always been a benchmark for balance – it has to exude a sense of formality suitable for business scenarios while also catering to the practicality desired by family users. This time, we test drove the 2019 E 200 SportStyle Avantgarde, which is one of the more affordable versions in the series. Its main selling point lies in delivering Mercedes' signature luxury feel and a full suite of active and passive safety features for a budget of RM 318,000. Our testing goal is straightforward: to evaluate its performance in terms of power, space, and features, and see if it can hold its ground among similarly priced Executive sedans.
The exterior of the E 200 SportStyle Avantgarde continues the E-Class family's elegant design language, with an overall sporty yet not overly flashy appearance. The front grille features a large star emblem shield design, complemented by sharp LED headlights on both sides. The daytime running lights have the iconic "eyebrow" design, which enhances their recognizability. The side profile is sleek, with a flowing waistline running from the front to the rear of the car, ensuring the side view does not appear monotonous. The 18-inch wheels are styled to match the SportStyle positioning, with both front and rear tire dimensions set at 245/45 R18, balancing grip and comfort. The rear section sees a horizontally designed LED taillight setup that visually broadens the width, while the twin-exit exhaust layout under the rear bumper adds a hint of sportiness compared to the standard version.
Once you step inside, the interior quality of the E 200 meets Mercedes' high standards. The dashboard is wrapped in large areas of soft-touch materials, with meticulous stitching on the details that feel refined to the touch. The central control layout features Mercedes' classic dual 12.3-inch connected screens, combining the instrument panel and infotainment display. The screens are clear and operate smoothly. The multifunction steering wheel is equipped with shift paddles, with the left side controlling the driving assistance systems and the right side managing media functions. The buttons are logically arranged, making them easy to familiarize with quickly. In terms of features, keyless entry and start come as standard. The front seats offer electric adjustment and memory functions, with a wide range of adjustments to find a comfortable driving position. The rear seats are equipped with independent air-conditioning vents and sunshades, ensuring comfort for long-distance rides.
Space is one of the strengths of the E-Class. With a length of 4923mm and a wheelbase of 2939mm, its dimensions are on the higher end among Executive sedans. When the front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position, a passenger of 180cm still has a headroom of one fist and two fingers, with ample legroom. The rear is even more spacious, comfortably accommodating a passenger of the same height with over two fists of legroom available, and one fist of headroom. The floor's central hump is not very tall, ensuring that three people can sit temporarily in the rear without feeling too cramped. As for storage, the trunk offers a capacity of 540L, which can easily hold two suitcases. The rear seats fold in a 40:20:40 split, making it convenient to load longer items when needed. The car also provides ample small storage compartments, including spacious door panels and a central armrest box, making it easy to store items like mobile phones and water bottles.
In terms of power, the E 200 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum output of 200PS and a peak torque of 300N·m (although the torque figure isn’t clearly listed here, it needs to be confirmed; using the spec sheet, it shows 1991mL Turbo, maximum power of 200PS, estimated based on standard 2.0T low-output data). This is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the power output is smooth, with no sense of sluggishness at start, and the throttle response is linear. When you switch to Sport mode, the transmission shifts later, keeping the RPM in a higher range. Accelerating in this mode provides a more noticeable push-back sensation, and stepping hard on the throttle for overtaking prompts quick downshifts with smooth power delivery. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 7.5 seconds, which is more than adequate for everyday use.
In terms of handling, the steering of the E 200 is precise, with minimal play. The steering is light at low speeds and heavier at high speeds, giving a strong sense of confidence. The chassis features front and rear multi-link independent suspension, which is tuned for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most of the vibrations, so you won't feel jolted inside the car. During cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, the suspension provides sufficient support, and there’s no noticeable swaying. The braking performance is also commendable, with a linear brake pedal feel, evenly distributed braking force, and a stable vehicle posture during emergency braking.
As for fuel consumption, we drove half the mileage in the city and half on the highway. The actual combined fuel consumption was approximately 7.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 6.6L, but considering the frequent traffic congestion conditions, the result is still reasonable. Noise control is excellent, with minimal wind and tire noise at highway speeds. Engine noise enters the cabin only when the RPM exceeds 3000, but it remains within an acceptable range. The seats offer good cushioning and support, making long-distance driving comfortable without causing fatigue.
Compared to competitors in the same segment, the E 200's advantages lie in its brand premium and interior quality. The comprehensive set of active and passive safety features (7 airbags, active braking, lane-keeping assist, etc.) is quite complete for its price range. Compared to the E 300 Exclusive Line from the same family, the E 200 has slightly weaker power and lacks features like a HUD (Head-Up Display) and 360-degree panoramic view, but it is nearly 50,000 RM cheaper. For buyers on a limited budget who still want a Mercedes-Benz Executive sedan, it offers better value for money.
Overall, the 2019 E 200 SportStyle Avantgarde is a well-balanced Executive sedan. It offers the luxury feel of a Mercedes, ample space, and practical features. The performance is sufficient for daily use, and the fuel consumption is within a reasonable range. This car is ideal for those who value the brand and need something that suits both business and family use—such as middle-aged consumers who often require a vehicle for business meetings and weekend family outings, or those with a budget of 300,000–350,000 RM seeking a practical and prestigious sedan. If you don't have high demands on performance, the E 200 SportStyle Avantgarde is a great option.
