Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 2020 Review

In the D-segment luxury mid-sized SUV market, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe has always been a representative of combining sporty styling with luxurious texture. The 2020 GLC 300 4MATIC Coupe highlights its 2.0T high-output engine, standard intelligent safety configurations across the lineup, and coupe-like sloping roof design as its core selling points. Many consumers are curious whether it can strike a balance between practicality and driving enjoyment. This time, through a static experience and dynamic test drive, we conducted a comprehensive test of this vehicle's real-world performance to provide a reference for potential buyers.
In terms of appearance, the 2020 GLC 300 Coupe retains Mercedes-Benz's signature design language. The front features a large-size star-pattern grille paired with chrome accents, making it highly recognizable. On the side, the most striking element is the sloping roofline extending from the B-pillar to the rear, paired with 20-inch multi-spoke wheels for a sportier look compared to the standard GLC SUV. The rear features LED taillight clusters that echo the design of the front, while the dual-exhaust layout enhances its performance-oriented feel. The lighting system comes standard with LED headlights and daytime running lights, while the automatic headlight function increases daily convenience.
Stepping inside, the interior showcases the luxurious feel typical of Mercedes-Benz. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials and adorned with metal accents, offering a refined tactile experience. The 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display and full digital instrument cluster form a dual-screen design that operates smoothly; the built-in MBUX system supports voice control. The front seats feature electric adjustments with 4-way lumbar support, providing moderate cushioning and support, ensuring comfort during long journeys. The rear seats can be split 40:20:40, and the trunk offers a standard capacity of 500 liters, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats to accommodate family trips or cargo needs. In terms of configurations, the car comes standard with seven airbags, a 360-degree panoramic camera, automatic parking, lane-changing assistance, and other safety features. The dual-zone automatic climate control system and the independent air vents in the rear cater to the comfort of rear passengers as well.
Regarding dimensions, the car measures 4,732mm in length, 1,890mm in width, 1,602mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,873mm. With the front seats adjusted to a comfortable driving position, a passenger measuring 175cm in height has a headroom of one fist and two fingers in the front row; the same passenger in the rear row has about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom due to the sloping roof design — sufficient for daily use. As for storage space, the door pockets can hold two 500ml water bottles, the center armrest box has moderate capacity, and the front row is equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet for external devices.
In terms of performance, the 2020 GLC 300 Coupe is powered by a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum output of 262PS and a peak torque of 370N·m. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.3 seconds. During our test drive, the initial acceleration response was immediate, with the throttle calibrated for a linear feel, providing a good push with a light press. In Sport mode, the transmission delays gear changes and maintains higher RPMs, ensuring sufficient power reserves for overtaking. For daily driving, the Comfort mode suffices, offering smooth gear transitions without noticeable jerks.
In terms of handling performance, the steering wheel is precise, with minimal play, light at low speeds and heavier at high speeds, giving the driver ample confidence. The chassis adopts front and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort. When passing speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out most vibrations, ensuring passengers inside the vehicle do not feel significant jolts. When cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range, and the addition of the all-wheel-drive system provides more stable tire grip. Overall, its handling performance is above average among SUVs in its class.
During the fuel consumption test, we drove about 50km on congested city roads and 50km on highways, with an average speed of roughly 35km/h. The final tested fuel consumption was approximately 8.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official combined fuel consumption of 7.1L/100km. However, considering the burden of the 2.0T engine and all-wheel-drive system, this result is within the normal range for its class. Regarding braking performance, the brake pedal feedback is linear, and the braking distance is moderate, giving sufficient confidence during daily driving.
In terms of ride comfort, the noise control inside the car is quite good. At high speeds, wind and tire noise are within acceptable ranges, and engine noise only becomes prominent when revving at high RPMs. The seats strike a good balance between support and cushioning. The backrest angle of the rear seats is moderate, ensuring comfort during long trips.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2020 GLC 300 4MATIC Coupe lie in its rich standard safety features, the luxurious feel of the Mercedes-Benz brand, and the uniqueness brought by its coupe-like design. Compared to competitors such as the BMW X4 or Audi Q5 Sportback in the same segment, it has an edge in terms of its abundant features and relatively reasonable pricing.
This car is suitable for two types of consumers: first, family users who value luxury and safety, as its spacious interior and comprehensive safety features meet the needs of daily travel; second, young consumers who desire a distinctive design, with its fastback-style design making it more recognizable among competitors. If you want both the practicality of an SUV and something other than the ordinary design, the 2020 GLC 300 4MATIC Coupe is a worthwhile choice.
In summary, the 2020 GLC 300 4MATIC Coupe strikes a good balance between luxury, features, performance, and practicality, making it a well-rounded luxury midsize coupe SUV.
