In recent years, competition in the compact SUV market has been heating up, and consumers' demand for space utility, intelligent configurations, and balanced performance has become increasingly clear. As a frequent player in this segment, the MG HS has introduced an updated 2025 model. This upgrade not only tweaks its exterior details but also optimizes its intelligent configurations and driving experience. Our test drive aims to verify whether these upgrades truly enhance the overall competitiveness of the model and whether it can secure a stronger position among its peers.

The exterior changes of the 2025 MG HS focus on the details, with the overall style still balancing sportiness and fashion. The front adopts a larger blacked-out grille, paired with sharp LED headlight clusters. The seamless transition between the light strips and the grille trims improves recognition. The side body lines retain the original muscular feel, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, matched with 18-inch multi-spoke wheels, achieving a visually steady yet dynamic effect. At the rear, the taillight clusters have been redesigned with more intricate interior structures, while the dual exhaust layout emphasizes its sporty attributes. In the lighting system, full LED sources are used for the headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights, offering clear and tech-savvy visuals when illuminated.

Moving inside, the level of luxury and technology in the interior has noticeably improved. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, accented by silver trims and piano lacquer panels, delivering a refined tactile and visual experience. The central control screen has been upgraded to 12.3 inches, equipped with the latest MG iSmart intelligent system, which supports voice control, CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. Both operational fluidity and response speed have been enhanced. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, with the front seats offering electric adjustment and heating functions, showcasing excellent lateral support and lumbar comfort. In terms of features, the vehicle is equipped with a panoramic sunroof, automatic air conditioning, a 360-degree panoramic camera, and wireless charging, ensuring convenience in daily use.

Regarding space, the dimensions of the 2025 MG HS are 4574mm×1876mm×1664mm with a wheelbase of 2720mm, placing it in the upper-mid range among its class. Front-row seating is spacious, with a 180cm tall individual having a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting their seating position. The rear-row space is equally generous, with two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, making it comfortable even with three passengers in the back. In terms of storage, the front central armrest box and door storage compartments are sizeable, while the trunk offers a standard capacity of 463L that can be extended to 1287L by folding down the rear seats. This provides sufficient space for daily family outings and long-distance travel. The rear also features air conditioning vents and USB charging ports, improving passenger comfort in the back.

In terms of performance, the test drive model is equipped with a 1.5T turbocharged engine with a maximum power output of 124kW and a peak torque of 250N·m, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. During daily driving, the power response is relatively quick, with no noticeable lag during initial acceleration, providing a smooth and linear driving experience. Switching to sport mode increases throttle sensitivity and accelerates the shift speed of the transmission, ensuring ample power for overtaking and making it easy to handle highway conditions. Fuel consumption is average, with a combined 7.2L per 100km under mixed driving conditions, aligning with the typical levels for compact SUVs.

The handling and chassis performance are commendable. The steering wheel offers precise handling with minimal dead zone and clear directionality, providing drivers with good confidence in control. The chassis features a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort without losing support. When dealing with urban road bumps and speed bumps, the suspension effectively absorbs vibrations, ensuring passengers inside the car do not feel significant discomfort. While cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, and the suspension's supportability ensures vehicle stability. In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise are well suppressed at high speeds, and although engine noise is noticeable during acceleration, it does not affect normal conversations inside the car.

Overall, the 2025 MG HS focuses its upgrades mainly on intelligent features and ride quality. The adjustments in exterior details also make the model look younger and more fashionable. Compared to competitors like the Haval H6 and Changan CS75 PLUS in the same segment, the MG HS offers certain advantages in terms of intelligent systems and interior quality. Pricing is expected to remain affordable, highlighting its excellent value for money. This car is suitable for family users who prioritize space practicality, advanced features, and ride comfort. Additionally, its sporty exterior design is likely to attract the attention of younger consumers.

The 2025 MG HS enhances its product strength through detailed upgrades, showing strong competitiveness in the compact SUV market. Whether for daily commuting or family outings, it delivers a well-balanced performance. If you're looking for an SUV that offers ample space, rich features, and an affordable price, the 2025 MG HS is worth considering for your shortlist.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of the Genting Mountain. Just as we started on the mountain road, it began to rain. The 1.5T turbo of the MG HS kicked in quite promptly, and it had power as soon as I gave it gas while climbing. It was also stable when cornering, though the engine noise was a bit loud during sudden acceleration. Near the summit, the car in front suddenly braked sharply, and before I could react, the auto braking system beeped and stopped my car for me — later, I saw on the dashboard that it was the AEB system that had been triggered. The safety features are indeed reliable, but in terms of performance, it would be even better if it were a bit quieter. Overall, I’d give it a 4 out of 5.

The interior of the old car I previously owned felt so plasticky, like a toy. But after switching to the 2025 MG HS public, it’s finally comfortable! The soft-wrapped dashboard feels premium to the touch, although the central control screen occasionally lags a bit, but it's not a big deal. Last week, during the morning rush hour in Kuala Lumpur, the L2 assisted driving feature helped me maintain distance with the car in front, so I didn’t have to keep pressing the brake pedal, making it much easier than before. Over the weekend, I took my family to Genting, and even on the winding mountain roads, the car stayed super stable, loaded with safety features. My wife felt safe enough to take a nap in the backseat with her eyes closed. Giving a full 5-star score for safety is totally reasonable, and 4 stars for the interior feels fair too. In the same class in Malaysia, there’s no competition when it comes to value for money!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and children to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. As soon as we got onto the uphill road, we encountered heavy rain, and even with the wipers working like crazy, it was hard to see the road. The MG HS's automatic headlights and anti-glare rearview mirror were quite reliable, preventing the oncoming high beams from blinding me. However, the body roll was more noticeable than I expected, so I had to ease off the throttle while cornering. In terms of safety features, the automatic braking was triggered once when I got too close to the car in front, which startled me but indeed saved the situation. As for the exterior, the grille design of the front end looks quite imposing, but the chrome strip on the rear is a bit too shiny — it easily picks up fingerprints and looks smudged just a couple of days after washing. Overall, it's sufficient for daily family use, but not suitable for aggressive driving.

Recently commuting with the 2025 MG HS Public, giving it gas during rush hours for overtaking feels powerful and not sluggish. Carrying three colleagues in the back seat to visit construction sites, and no one complains about being cramped. When waiting at red lights, the air conditioning cools quickly without needing to turn it on in advance, which feels amazing on stuffy hot days!
