Nowadays, the choices in the small SUV market are increasing, but models that balance unique design with everyday practicality are always the focus of consumers. The 2013 MINI Countryman public, as the brand's first crossover SUV, not only retains MINI's iconic retro style but also introduces upgrades in space and off-road capability, precisely catering to the needs of users seeking "MINI sentiment + practical functions." This time, through a real-world test drive, we primarily evaluated its design details, spatial performance, and dynamic driving capabilities to see if it meets the daily needs of families or urban commutes.

From the exterior, the 2013 Countryman public continues the MINI family's design with round headlights and a vertical waterfall-style grille, making the front end highly recognizable. Unlike the compact body of traditional MINI cars, its bodylines are more robust, and the roof has a slight coupe-like slope, paired with 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels that emphasize its crossover vibe. For the rear, the square tail lights use LED light sources, creating a striking effect when lit; a silver skid plate is added under the rear bumper to enhance the SUV's ruggedness. The overall design retains MINI's classic elements while meeting the demand for a personalized exterior with crossover features.

Sitting inside, the retro interior style is cleverly combined with modern technology. The center console features circular air vents and a floating 8.8-inch touchscreen that supports touch and physical knob controls, which are responsive. The seats are made of a fabric and leather combination, with the front seats supporting 6-way manual adjustment and offering decent support; the rear seats come with a central armrest and cup holders, ensuring comfort during long-distance rides. In terms of features, it is equipped with Bluetooth connectivity, automatic air conditioning, and a reversing camera, covering the essential functionalities for everyday use. For materials, the upper part of the dashboard uses soft-touch plastic, and fabric wrapping is added on the door panels, making the overall texture fitting for its class.

As for dimensions, its length, width, and height are 4097mm, 1789mm, and 1561mm respectively, with a wheelbase of 2595mm. In actual seating experience, a 175cm passenger in the front row has headroom of one fist and two fingers; a 175cm passenger in the rear row enjoys legroom of two fists and headroom of one fist, a much roomier experience than traditional MINI models. Regarding storage space, the trunk has a standard capacity of 350L, which can expand to 1170L when the rear seats are folded flat. It can accommodate two 28-inch suitcases plus one carry-on suitcase, meeting the needs of short family trips. In addition, the storage slots in the front and rear door panels, central armrest box, and glove box offer ample space for daily small items.

Regarding power, it is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine with a maximum output of 88kW (120 horsepower) and a peak torque of 160N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic manual transmission. During daily driving, the power output is smooth during startup, and the throttle response is linear; when accelerating at medium to high speeds, stepping on the throttle more aggressively makes the transmission quickly downshift, providing sufficient power for overtaking. Switching to Sport mode enhances throttle sensitivity and delays shift timing, making the power delivery more aggressive. Overall, the power level is suitable for urban commutes and highway cruising and is perfectly adequate for daily use.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and the body roll is well-controlled during cornering, maintaining MINI's consistent sporty genes. The suspension system uses a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned on the firmer side. While going over speed bumps, road feedback can be clearly felt but without a jarring bumpiness. The chassis remains stable during high-speed driving without any floatiness. As for braking, the brake pedal travel is moderate, the braking force output is linear, and the vehicle's posture remains stable during emergency braking.

In fuel consumption tests, we drove 100km each on urban roads (a combination of congested and smooth traffic) and highways, with a final combined fuel consumption figure of 7.2L/100km. This performance is slightly above average in the 1.6L model segment. Regarding noise control, interior noise at idle is 52 decibels, and at 100km/h, it measures 65 decibels, mainly stemming from tire and wind noise, though it doesn’t affect normal conversations inside the car. The seat padding is moderately firm, providing adequate lumbar support for long trips without causing significant fatigue.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2013 MINI Countryman public lies in the combination of "MINI design + practical space"—it retains the brand’s iconic retro style while addressing the traditional MINI's shortcoming of limited space. Compared to competitors in the same class like the Honda HR-V or Toyota C-HR, it features more distinctive design and comparable space performance while offering better handling; however, it might slightly fall short in terms of power and the richness of configurations compared to newer models.

This car is suitable for two types of users: first, consumers who love the MINI brand culture but also need to take family usage into consideration; second, young individuals who primarily commute in the city, occasionally go on short trips, and seek a balance between individuality and practicality. Its unique design meets the aesthetic needs of users, while the spacious interior and reliable performance make it suitable for everyday usage scenarios.

In summary, the 2013 MINI Countryman public is a "balanced" crossover vehicle—it combines MINI’s charm and distinctive design with the practical space and versatility of an SUV. If you’re looking for a vehicle that’s “not just for commuting but also reflects your personality” for daily use, it’s a worthwhile choice to consider.

This little car shoots forward on a slope as soon as you step on the gas, the steering wheel feels heavy but responds exactly as directed, driving it feels powerful!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. The mountain road, having just experienced a rain, was very bumpy. The Countryman’s chassis is really solid; it absorbs shocks more steadily than I imagined when driving over potholes. The 1.6L engine’s power isn’t too sluggish for climbing, though during rapid acceleration, the engine noise is a bit rough — giving it 4 points for performance feels fair. The interior’s round instrument panel and piano key buttons suit my taste well, but the small-sized glove box on the passenger side can’t even fit a folding umbrella, so 4 points is just right. However, when driving on the road, the red-and-white two-tone body has an impressive head-turning rate. Especially in the rain and fog, it looks like a small hot hatch; the appearance definitely deserves a full 5 points.

A few days ago, during a heavy rain, I braked suddenly to avoid a pothole. The car body was so stable, it felt like it was glued to the ground, instantly maximizing my sense of security!

Been an old companion for nearly ten years, better than motorcycles at squeezing through traffic. On weekends, it comfortably carries three friends up the mountain for kopi. Just need to crank up the air-con, or those leather seats will burn your backside — but who can complain when the dashboard still feels as good as new?

Squeezing into the morning rush hour every day, this car gives plenty of confidence for overtaking, weaving through traffic effortlessly. Even with three friends in the back seat, it doesn't feel cramped, though the interior has a bit too much of a plastic feel. Driving in heavy rain feels stable, full of safety assurance, and its compact size makes parking in narrow alleys super convenient.
