MINI Countryman 2015 Review

In Malaysia's compact luxury SUV market, the MINI Countryman has always secured a spot with its unique British style and adaptable urban agility. The 2015 MINI Countryman public, as the entry-level model of the series, retains the iconic design language of the MINI family while making targeted optimizations in practicality. It is particularly appealing for consumers seeking a balance between individuality and daily commuting. The main purpose of this test drive is to verify whether this entry-level Countryman meets the needs of target users in terms of static experience, dynamic performance, and cost-effectiveness.
From the exterior, the 2015 Countryman public continues MINI's classic rounded contour, but the body lines appear more robust compared to standard MINI models. The raised design at the wheel arches adds to the unique strength of an SUV. At the front, the combination of round headlights and a black grille is highly recognizable, with a clear MINI emblem inside the grille. The lower bumper is made of black plastic material, which not only reduces the cost of scratch repairs but also enhances the crossover style. On the side, the double waistline runs from the front to the rear, paired with 16-inch alloy wheels, creating an overall harmonious proportion. The rear design is relatively simple, with vertically arranged taillights echoing the front headlights. A chrome trim on the tailgate enhances the sense of sophistication, while the black protective plate at the bottom aligns with the front design.
Entering the interior, the design style remains typically MINI, with a circular center console as the visual focus. Paired with black and beige fabric seats, it creates a cozy and dynamic atmosphere. The upper part of the center console uses hard plastic material, but due to its textured finish, it doesn’t feel cheap; the inner side of the door panels and parts of the seats are wrapped in fabric, providing decent comfort. In terms of features, this entry-level model is equipped with a 6.5-inch central display that supports Bluetooth connection and USB ports. Although it does not include the latest smart connectivity systems, it is sufficient for daily music and call needs. The air conditioning control area uses physical buttons, with dials and buttons offering moderate resistance, making them intuitive and convenient to operate. Additionally, the front seats support manual height and forward/backward adjustment, and the steering wheel can be manually adjusted for height, allowing drivers of different body types to find a comfortable driving position.
Space performance is one of Countryman's advantages compared to standard MINI models. The vehicle dimensions are 4110mm×1789mm×1561mm, with a wheelbase of 2595mm, which is considered average among compact SUVs. The front seating space is spacious, with a 175cm tall individual still having about a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat position. The rear seating space is also satisfactory, with about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, making it comfortable even for three adult passengers without appearing overly cramped. In terms of storage capacity, the trunk offers a conventional volume of 350L, expandable to 1170L by folding down the rear seats, enough to accommodate two 28-inch suitcases and some miscellaneous items, which is adequate for short family trips. Additionally, the interior features multiple storage compartments, including door panel slots, a central armrest box, and cup holders, providing solid practicality.
In terms of power, the 2015 Countryman public is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 88kW (120Ps) and a peak torque of 160N·m. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Judging from the parameters, the engine's power output leans towards smoothness, making it suitable for daily city commuting. In actual driving, the power response during the starting phase is relatively gentle, and pressing the accelerator does not cause any abrupt jerking. The acceleration process is linear, and even after reaching a speed of 60km/h, the power output remains stable, making it no problem for overtaking in city traffic. During high-speed driving, when the speed reaches 120km/h and you accelerate further, the power reserve appears slightly insufficient. However, for an entry-level model, it is generally adequate. The transmission has a clear shifting logic, with smooth upshifts and minimal jerkiness during downshifts, ensuring good comfort during daily driving.
In terms of handling and chassis performance, the Countryman public inherits the MINI family's excellent handling capabilities. The steering is precise with minimal slack, the turning force is moderate, and it provides clear feedback on road conditions. The suspension system consists of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards firmness. When driving over bumpy roads, the body vibration is not thoroughly filtered, which might cause some discomfort for rear passengers. However, when cornering, the firm suspension offers sufficient support, resulting in minimal body roll and excellent handling stability. Additionally, this model adopts a front-wheel drive layout, and the ground clearance of the chassis is 149mm, offering better off-road capability compared to standard sedans. It can handle light unpaved roads comfortably.
Fuel consumption performance was one of the key aspects tested in this review. In congested urban conditions, fuel consumption is approximately 8.5L per 100 kilometers; during highway cruising, it can drop to about 6.2L per 100 kilometers; and the average fuel consumption under mixed road conditions is around 7.3L per 100 kilometers. Such performance is considered normal for a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine and meets the expectations of family users for fuel efficiency. In terms of noise control, during city driving, engine noise and tire noise are not significant. At highway speeds, wind noise gradually increases but remains within an acceptable range, not hindering normal conversation inside the vehicle.
In summary, the 2015 MINI Countryman public stands out with its unique exterior design, flexible space, and stable driving experience. Compared to compact SUVs in the same class, such as the Volkswagen T-Roc and Honda HR-V, the Countryman boasts greater brand recognition and more flexible space utilization, though the level of configuration and power parameters appear slightly weaker. However, considering its entry-level position, such performance is understandable.
This model is primarily suited for young families seeking a balance between individuality and practicality. They not only want a vehicle with a unique design style but also require it to meet daily commuting and family travel needs. Moreover, for consumers who are fond of the MINI brand but need more space, the Countryman public is also a good choice.
Overall, the 2015 MINI Countryman public is a compact SUV with a distinctive personality and strong practicality. Although it does not have many highlights in terms of configuration and performance, it still manages to attract a portion of target users with its unique brand charm and flexible space performance. If you are looking for a city SUV that combines individuality and practicality, this model is worth considering.
